And i'd offered him to graffiti around my window if he wanted, but he said 'that's not the done thing', so to speak, and went on to explain when and how it's done and when it isn't. But then he'd said "oh, bird!" in a way that was pretty sweet!
I think he was ILI though quite a young time ago; So they care about that sort of stuff, cred or something like it?

ILI really does care about how something is done, but will cave if someone wants something else. Sounds like your ILI friend said 'when and what' firm details, then decided differently for you, Why not just do it, or some such, and used a phrase to indicate the cave-in.
