Gyms go for the long commitments because they know most people won't actually make use of it. It's sort of like college meal tickets, they make money by banking that you won't realize you actually paid for goods/services you never actually bothered to recieve.

I wasn't familiar with the South Beach diet before, but having just now read the Wikipedia entry for this diet, it sounds like someone's actually making money telling people to eat healthy. It's certainly better than the various other "diets" out there.
That faith makes blessed under certain circumstances, that blessedness does not make of a fixed idea a true idea, that faith moves no mountains but puts mountains where there are none: a quick walk through a madhouse enlightens one sufficiently about this. (A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything.) - Friedrich Nietzsche

I was thrilled when I saw South Beach Diet frozen meals at the grocery store today... but I tried one and it was sorta gross. Maybe the other kinds won't be so bad.

I went to sign up for the gym right by my house, but they wanted a 2 year commitment... fuck that. If it was 6 months I would have done it. If it was a year I would have considered it but prolly wouldn't have done it. It was sorta funny... the owner of the gym told me that I don't need to lose weight.

My main incentive to go through with this lifestyle change isn't the weight loss, it's the energy. I have always had issues with fatigue, but I felt better when I was on the south beach diet before... until I was too lazy and busy to eat the proper foods and ended up just not eating enough and then deciding that I didn't have the time or money to continue with it and didn't feel like putting forth the effort. I went the adderall route instead.
Try the YMCA - they only insist on a year. And they'll bill you monthly. Take my word, complexify your carbs and you'll feel like you have a new lease on life!!

I agree niveK, it's one of the few healthy diets I've ever heard about. And I don't want to risk them reporting me to credit bureaus. I hate taking on long term financial obligations. If I wanted to increase my living expenses I'd go get a loan for a car (stupidest thing most people do).

Blaze, I don't want to join a gym that isn't RIGHT by by house because I know I won't use it if it's too much hassle.
