i doubt the elephants know what they're painting, e.g. that it's the outline of an elephant.
i read an article once about an elephant in a zoo who painted. its paintings were very "abstract" but sometimes seemed to be reflecting things that had happened. like one day some emergency happened and emergency services vehicles arrived. after, the elephant painted something with a lot of reds and blues, like the flashing lights. i could totally believe that the situation impacted it emotionally and it was trying to express that. it's like how when children start to draw and color, it may look like it's just a bunch of scribbles, but it means something. i vaguely recall all of my child scribble pictures meant something to me and often i was trying to depict or express something. my mom took pictures of me displaying some of my scribble drawings and i looked like i knew exactly what they were of (and didn't know that no one else possibly could).
i couldn't find this article again... & i don't know if i remembered everything right.
