Someone ate a $120,000 banana that an artist had taped to a wall

The work, by Maurizio Cattelan, was ripe for the picking -- and on Saturday, it was unceremoniously taken off the wall at the Art Basel Miami Beach and eaten by a performance artist, amid a crowd of stunned onlookers, some of whom posted videos of the incident.

"I really love this installation. It's very delicious," David Datuna wrote on Instagram, alongside a video showing the aftermath of his stunt.

When he was in high school, Pete Buttigieg wrote a prizewinning essay praising Bernie Sanders.

Gems include: “Such an atmosphere inevitably distances our society from its leadership and is thus a fundamental threat to the principles of democracy. It also calls into question what motivates a run for office — in many cases, apparently, only the desire to occupy it.”

"A new attitude has swept American politics. Candidates have discovered that it is easier to be elected by not offending anyone rather than by impressing the voters. Politicians are rushing for the center, careful not to stick their necks out on issues."

Lmao. Buttigieg became exactly the sort of politician he condemned. And lol at Jacobin listing him as the author.

Well, a vote for Pete Buttigieg is a vote for his parents, which is why I would probably not even vote for him against Trump. People make jokes about him being gay and his last name being like butt or booty but honestly I think those jokes would be funny if he were a real candidate. The only butt or booty that he brings to mind for me is the ones he brown-noses, especially with his facial expression always looking like he is sniffing a butt. Be gentle on Pete, since it's not like he decides what kind of politician he is. Also, don't vote for him.

    Cthulhu and Christ

I mostly disagree with the essay, though it has some decent insights regarding the author's life experiences. However, the comic is hilarious, and as one commentor put it, because Jack Chick is a dolt.

"“Gone But Not Forgotten.” It sounds like the title of a paperback crime thriller or a steamy gay romance movie (because it is, in fact), but it’s also the title of a new psychological study subtitled “Virginity Loss and Current Sexual Satisfaction.” The study, conducted by two psychology professors at the Universities of Mississippi and Tennessee, purports to demonstrate that the way you lose your virginity “is so salient that it is related to future sexual satisfaction and functioning.” Or, as The Atlantic’s Lindsay Abrams puts it, skillfully ramping the hysterical implications of this study up to 11 while appearing to ask a simple rhetorical question, “[W]hat if there’s even more pressure on that situation than we realize, and how it goes the first time affects the sex you have for the rest of your life?”"

When it comes to caring about christianity at all, I only notice militant atheists or trad folks here and I guess this is kinda gross to both, but I felt it sooo hard.

    http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2013/0...ng-the-church/

I point to research that shows young evangelicals often feel they have to choose between their intellectual integrity and their faith, between science and Christianity, between compassion and holiness.

I talk about how the evangelical obsession with sex can make Christian living seem like little more than sticking to a list of rules, and how millennials long for faith communities in which they are safe asking tough questions and wrestling with doubt.

Invariably, after I’ve finished my presentation and opened the floor to questions, a pastor raises his hand and says, “So what you’re saying is we need hipper worship bands. …”

And I proceed to bang my head against the podium.

    ...

What millennials really want from the church is not a change in style but a change in substance.

We want an end to the culture wars. We want a truce between science and faith. We want to be known for what we stand for, not what we are against.

We want to ask questions that don’t have predetermined answers.

We want churches that emphasize an allegiance to the kingdom of God over an allegiance to a single political party or a single nation.

We want our LGBT friends to feel truly welcome in our faith communities.

We want to be challenged to live lives of holiness, not only when it comes to sex, but also when it comes to living simply, caring for the poor and oppressed, pursuing reconciliation, engaging in creation care and becoming peacemakers.

You can’t hand us a latte and then go about business as usual and expect us to stick around. We’re not leaving the church because we don’t find the cool factor there; we’re leaving the church because we don’t find Jesus there.

The 'Avengers' director shares his thoughts on something that's bugged him for years.

Joss Whedon has directed two of the biggest superhero films ever, so he knows the genre like few can — and there's one thing in particular that bothers him about it.
During a Tumblr Q&A, one person asked if the popularity of superhero movies might have something to do with "the rise of authoritarian wannabe regimes all over the world." The director responded in the affirmative.

Marvel apparently rejected an Art Spiegelman essay about fascism because of a Trump reference

In an extra addendum, Spiegelman says that a Folio Society editor told him that Marvel (as co-publisher of the collection) was trying to stay “apolitical” and wanted him to remove the “Orange Skull” reference. “I didn’t think of myself as especially political compared with some of my fellow travelers,” Spiegelman explains, “but when asked to kill a relatively anodyne reference to an Orange Skull I realized that perhaps it had been irresponsible to be playful about the dire existential threat we now live with.” Spiegelman says he decided to withdraw his essay from the publication because of that, adding that he had also recently learned that Marvel chairman Ike Perlmutter and his wife had both recently given the maximum donation of $360,000 to Trump’s reelection campaign.

    I'm still not a vegetarian, but -

    https://www.texasobserver.org/ptsd-i...laughterhouse/

"'Pigs down on the kill floor have come up to nuzzle me like a puppy. Two minutes later I had to kill them. … I can’t care.”

It will come as no surprise that the consequences of such emotional dissonance include domestic violence, social withdrawal, drug and alcohol abuse, and severe anxiety. As slaughterhouse workers are increasingly being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder, researchers are finally starting to systematically explore the results of killing sentient animals for a living.

Amy Fitzgerald, a criminology professor at the University of Windsor in Canada, has found a strong correlation between the presence of a large slaughterhouse and high crime rates in U.S. communities. One might object that a slaughterhouse town’s disproportionate population of poor, working-class males might be the real cause, but Fitzgerald controlled for that possibility by comparing her data to counties with comparable populations employed in factory-like operations. In her study released in 2007, the abattoir stood out as the factor most likely to spike crime statistics. Slaughterhouse workers, in essence, were “desensitized,” and their behavior outside of work reflected it.

One thing lazy people in California who are resentful of New York-based "high culture" enjoy: not-very-subtly comparing pedants or "Grammar Nazis" to actual National Socialist Nazis. This is one example of why it matters that Slate Magazine is run by Microsoft. (Most Silicon Valley entrepreneur-types also have offices in New York, sometimes primary offices, but they still come into conflict with the established culture.)

An ardent promoter of prescriptivism is called a prescriptivist or, informally, a stickler.
Or a Grammar Nazi, but directly comparing "Grammar Nazis" to real historical Nazis just sounds literal-minded and dense, so we'll gloss over that.

We dun' need ta speak proper grammer! We are modern people with modern opportunities and not old-fashioned disciplinarians like Nazis!

    Hamburg Is Ugly

“Ja, Oskar, Ich struck another blow against die damn capitalists by scrawling mein name on ein Gastehaus die Amerikans namen Kentucky Fried Chicken.”
I've just found out someone I don't like also is considering moving to Hamburg, and this is what I show people for why Hamburg is just irredeemably awful and anyone who wants to go there should be shunned. Berlin has bad parts which should be avoided, but all of Hamburg is basically a bad part of Berlin.

Here's an example of the detrimental effects of cults with art as an example:

The Dark Side: Tonalism v. Colorism

The second painting is really perfect Neo-Impressionism despite using black. The Impressionists didn't use black, but that's really what they did wrong since the eye can indeed really see black and color is seen through opponent processes, and Neo-Impressionism doesn't have to exactly emulate them. On the other hand, besides not using black, the top one uses not even yellow but red for white, and the only difference between the shadows and the light area is the shadows are cooler. People can like it if they want, but I doubt anyone truly does, since it isn't so much "modern art" as just a bad grainy film in painting form to my eye. The top is perhaps appealing if you like what's objectively not true to nature in Impressionist theory and wish there were more, like a less blurry Renoir.
