"Because this is a cross-sectional study," the authors noted, "causation cannot be determined." In other words, it is not clear whether the brain differences were caused by marijuana. It also is not clear how long the differences last or whether they have any functional significance. One of the study's authors, Northwestern University psychiatrist Hans Breiter, goes even further in the Society for Neuroscience press release, saying, "This study raises a strong challenge to the idea that casual marijuana use isn't associated with bad consequences." Gever responds: "Um, no, it doesn't—not without before-and-after MRI scans showing brain structure changes in users that differ from nonusers and documentation of functional impairments associated with those changes."

All substance use is potentially harmful. Especially when it's illegal.
If you are interested in talking about it's pharmacology for other reasons, fine. But an individual drug being harmful doesn't in itself imply the superiority of one policy over another unless prohibition could actually decrease use. The best policy would be the one that minimizes the harms. So far the abomination known as The Drug War has been costly, both in dollars (+40 billion a year directly in the US) and human suffering (street & police violence, users without understanding and millions in prison) without even being able to reduce the usage of drugs.
Marijuana maybe non-toxic and it's fairly harmless in comparison to many other substances but it's harms are very real. The pothead culture loves it and those who advocate it's criminalization are often fearful of it. Both have their propaganda. I just want the users to be educated about their lifestyle choices and the current political climate is making it hard to find the middle ground between praisal and fear.
