Both.
Example: shawn notices that a woman who supposedly killed herself just picked up her dry cleaning and says "why would she pick up her dry cleaning if she was planning on killing herself? this wasn't a suicide!" etc.

You have a point in that a lot of stuff is not necessarily type-related, but in the sense that any type can and does use any function -- so it may be not type related but still function-related. .
I'd also say it's closer to-- shawn's assumption is that people who kill themselves necessarily have a clear plan to do it, and that even if they do have a plan, they do not do routine stuff like picking up dry cleaning -- those assumptions may or may not be true, but they stem from

The character in the show pretends to be a psychic. He soves mysteries through his gift of observation as well as his ability to piece together clue involving cause and effect relationships. He determines how one event will affect another, or has affected another.
@Joy: what you speak of is called "logic". I guess this is what happens when people get too sucked into socionics and forget about real-world definitions.
@gilligan: LOL for using the words "common sense" while having that quote in your sig.
See Joy, I just did it.![]()
