Default Songs You Want Played at Your Funeral

I've thought of a lot of different ones at different points in my life. Songs to make up a soundtrack to your life and such. But for the purposes of this thread, we're just focusing on your funeral. I admit this is a bit of a corollary to the theme song thread, but I thought it'd be fun.

At this moment in time, I can only think of one that immediately stands out for my own funeral. It's a cover of a Rolling Stones song, and you may remember it (or at least BG will remember it) as the song from the end credits to The Big Lebowski.

Feel free to suggest songs for others' funerals as well!

Gah. I love Townes Van Zandt so much.

In keeping with the Cohen brothers credits funeral songs:

I made a friend promise she'd play this at my funeral if I died before her. It sounds a bit cheesy now but well, we were 13.

When my buddy croaked some cousins of his fumbled through a rendition of "Wish You Were Here" on guitars, screwing up frequently and mumbling "Fuck..." into the funeral chapel microphone with each mistake. I'm quite sure he'd have been on the floor laughing at that tribute if he didn't also happen to be extremely dead and cremated at the time.

    aww, c'mon guys, too morbid?!

I know some of you out there have thought about this. Maybe I should have made this thread about wedding songs...

Birth and Death of the Day by Explosions in the Sky. Mad World by Gary Jules is another one that comes to mind. For the Love of God by Steve Vai, too.
But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...

Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Under cerulean skies...

it's just an odd topic that I think many haven't really given a thought
I've assumed that I'll be dead after dying, which is within the natural progression of things, so listening to music wouldn't be one of my prerogatives at that point

not quite the song I'd like to be played on my funeral but it has an ephemeral beauty to it nonetheless

Figures an ILI would be planning their funeral already.

I'd rather book a ballsy rock band and all my kith and kin to get themselves properly intoxicated however they can. Death doesn't even exist. There is nothing but life.

I probably haven't written my funeral song yet, although a lot of my older stuff could likely fit the bill if it was produced cleaner.

As for other-people music, it might be cool to play this at the end while people trickle off back to their daily lives.

If I chose to be an asshole at my funeral:

When you have been down in your grave... alive
Your mind decays and you're the coffin's slave
And when, at midnight, an uncanny bell tolls
Terrible noises, the dark graveyard calls

    Limbs break through the dirt
    Decay stinks like hell
    Dark creatures in the fog
    Crusted blood on the dead

    Triumph of death!
    Triumph of death!

    Eurynomos sends his souls
Buried by horrible mistakes (Let me out)
You feel you're eaten by worms
    And the night's alive again

When you have been down in your grave... alive, alive, alive
Your mind decays and you're MY coffin's slave
And when, at midnight, an uncanny bell tolls
Terrible noises, the dark graveyard calls... you, you, you, you, you

    why would I care?

the last funeral I went to they played " don't worry be happy " as everybody streamed out of the pews. it was uplifting and bizarrely morbid at the same time.

ILIs are a strange bunch it seems. One is true kvlt black metaller and the other some shrieking band.

    This to begin the funeral

    This to end it

Also as a homage to one of my favorite authors, a large number of bottles of XO cognac will be poured over my grave.

Probably begin with some kind of mind blowing fanfare like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFPwm0e_K98

Then proceed to some kind of relaxing string music, no lyrics

End with some kind of finale similar to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Slsi4SBrTV8

I wouldn't want the music to actually be about me though, just about death, rebirth, and cycles.. something reflective and peaceful.

then end with something very positive.

I think this makes for a beautiful funeral song. Maybe as the crowds are filing out, you know?

I always thought that if my mom had had a proper ceremony, I would have liked to include this song in the soundtrack. She was a Catholic, and the song being from 1969 I felt there was a generational connection. She was a hippie back then, after all.

I was listening to this the other day and thought "this might be nice to play at my funeral". Ironically, it's probably Tori Amos' least sad song. And I don't want something sad to be playing. I have been to far too many funerals in the last couple of years and I would want others to have some sort of joyfullness in seeing me off. Afterall, death is the next great adventure (hopefully).

But, realistically, seeing as I hail from The Singing Ritchies, I know that my kin would sing some sweet Appalachian ballad and it would be beautiful but sad. This is the way funerals in my family tend to go.

I'm surprised no one chose this yet:

"How could we forget those ancient myths that stand at the beginning of all races, the myths about dragons that at the last moment are transformed into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love."

this question feels odd to think about... I think I'd rather just have loved ones choose to play whatever songs they associate with me.

Default Songs You Want Played at Your Funeral

I want them to play the entire Boult recording of Elgar's Enigma Variations. No eulogies or prayers. Just the music.

preferably in surround sound and loud.

There's nothing like a trail of blood to find your way back home
You can't quit until you try
You can't live until you die
You can't learn to tell the truth
    Until you learn to lie

You can't breathe until you choke
You gotta laugh when you're the joke
    There's nothing like a funeral
    to make you feel alive

    Just open your eyes
    Just open your eyes
And see that life is beautiful.
Will you swear on your life,
That no one will cry at my funeral?

I know some things that you don't
I've done things that you won't
There's nothing like a trail of blood
to find your way back home

I was waiting for my hearse
What came next was so much worse
It took a funeral to make me feel alive

    Just open your eyes
    Just open your eyes
And see that life is beautiful.
Will you swear on your life,
That no one will cry at my funeral?

    Alive...
    Just open your eyes
    Just open your eyes
And see that life is beautiful.
Will you swear on your life,
That no one will cry at my funeral?

When you've lost it all, that's when you finally realize, that life is beautiful.

“My typology is . . . not in any sense to stick labels on people at first sight. It is not a physiognomy and not an anthropological system, but a critical psychology dealing with the organization and delimitation of psychic processes that can be shown to be typical.” —C.G. Jung

If I was to have a funeral party which may or may not happen before I die I would like the central track would be 'Life on Mars?'

then something like 'The Big Ship', and 'On Some Faraway Beach', and 'I'll Come Running', for their philosophical value.

Maybe it would begin with the playing of the 'A' side of 'Low', beginning with 'Speed of Life'...and end with the playing of the 'B' side, ending with 'Subterraneans' which may be doubly appropriate unless I have a space burial. In-between the album 'Neu! 75' would provide an appropriate atmosphere to dance and occasional reflect on the refreshments.
