I create my templates in the following order (it's not terribly efficient, but this is roughly how faceresearch.org does theirs):

It's a shit ton of work, but once you get into the flow it goes pretty quick.

Galen, thanks for the tutorial in your other post and the list of features you used for the templates. It is an arduous task to do it with several hundreds or thousand images, so researched a little bit and found a way of creating the templates in a more automatic way. I shortly explain this in my homepage. The results are also acceptable, as you can see in my homepage http://www.lelaps.de/projects/avgface.html. This is a sample of the results using several hundreds of images:
