So buy a knife from wall mart, use it to kill a deer, then whittle the bow from pine and use a sinew from the deer as the string. Boom.
But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...

Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Under cerulean skies...

Three men are found in the wilderness by civilized cannibals. The men are led to a campsite beside a great ocean.

You have two choices of death," says the chief. "We either will kill you as a coward, or you can die honorable death using a weapon of your choosing.
Either way, your skins will be used to make our canoes."

The first man, a soldier at heart, asks for a handgun. With this he shoots himself.

The next man, a warrior at heart, uses a liana vine to hang himself.

The last man, a comedian asks for a fork. He stabs himself repeatedly in the chest whilst shouting out loud: "I HOPE YOUR CANOE SINKS!"

When society collapses, I will ensure the posse I'm associated with is bigger, more disciplined, fairer and more brutal then the other ones and establish a new society.

Seriously, if you only have $16 to make a week of budget, you need to find a church or community program that will assist you with the food expenses.

I was actually being sarcastic, but I would assume too much from others to see it clearly.

I am an occasional dumpster diver and I believe it to be the most ethical way of acquiring food, especially otherwise very ecologically taxing food like red meat.
I could get along with dumpster food exclusively.

Actually local dumpsters have a lot of surplus. Most local freegans have to give away food to other hippies in order to avoid the food getting inedible.
You can go out very late and still find food although by then the good bits are usually taken.

I find it pretty disgusting how much food gets thrown away by restaurants and grocery stores.
There are some groups that make deals with grocery stores to have them donate to the group outdated items, or produce that's wilting, bruised, or otherwise not up to grocery store snuff. But many stores can't/won't donate that food due to legal restrictions.

Me too, I always ask for exactly the number of eggs I can eat and no more and tell the waitress that I will pay the menu price despite getting smaller portions.

If you happen to sit in the same table with me having dinner, you can act really inappropriate and I don't give a toss. But throw away food or, worse, play with it until it's inedible and you can be sure that I just lost a lot of respect towards you. It's kind of a taboo in my personal culture. I can adjust however. If you don't eat the plate clean, pass it to me and I'll finish it out of sense of duty. Even if it would contain meat.

I swear I'd be the best fed homeless person ever. You just have to be creative and think logically. If there's bakeries around town, just hang out there and ask for scraps when they close...I used to work at one and they pride themselves on baking everything fresh daily so we'd throw out literally garbage bags of food. It made me sick. And then there's stealing from farmers crops and what not...

No but really, saltine crackers and butter and jelly is like the best meal ever.

I feel the same way. Maybe it's just how I was brought up because my parents made me finish everything on my plate before I could leave the table. I can't leave leftovers, I feel really guilty about it. Throwing food away is such a waste. It's really insulting to me when I go out to eat with others and they take a bite to eat then leave the rest to be thrown out. It's like...damn..youre really that selfish? More than likely someone slaved over a hot stove for that or some innocent animal was killed to make that sandwich so the least you can do is finish it and be respectful. This is probably why I was a fat kid. Eff you, innocent animals who die for people and eff you value system----keeping me pleasantly plump since the 6th grade.

I still usually try to feed it to someone else. Eating (red/chicken) meat makes me feel fat easily and somehow it just tastes wrong and sometimes even outright revolting. And I'm usually not able to eat some hams.

My parents taught me that too and I still do that eagerly telling myself it's something else (like an honorable duty) than me indulging along with the whims of my Inner Fattie.
I really like how you place some respect for the systematically imprisoned and neglected creatures.

It would mean so much to me if people could live more with scraps instead of paying for a new ecologically hostile slaughter. Humanity has never been richer and here we are eating ad cardiovascular disease.

I really suck at budgeting, but I'm pretty good at feeding myself nevertheless. I don't recall ever having to be hungry for over a few hours because of money. Other people's leftovers, weird mixtures made of whatever I happen to find in the cupboard and paying a casual visit to my parents are all fine options. The only reason I haven't done dumpster diving yet is that I'm lazy and too afraid to go to the nearby train station alone after the shops have closed. I live in the worst neighbourhood of the city and have had a few too many uncomfortable experiences with the angry immigrant males and junkies that hang around the station. The number of rape/violence incidents happening there isn't too encouraging either.

Anyway, what would happen with the 16 dollars is that I'd probably not have the patience to go to a shop and count what I can and can't afford and to think of possible meals that could be prepared with such ingredients. Missing social events I'd like to attend is worse than missing a meal imo, so I'd buy anything cheap like a bunch of bananas or tuna or noodles and as much cheap beer as I could with the rest of the money. Being drunk and meeting people increases the chance of finding food, too.

You can eat really really well here on $16. Even fresh veggies and steak!

When I was poor my favorite thing in the world was chili. I got really good at eating on a budget after my mum died and we had no money.

    Tomato juice - $2
Large can of tomatoes - $1
bag of dried black beans - $1.50
1.5 pounds of the worst ground beef - $3
    Onions - $1
Pasta - $1 (for chili mac!)
(Usually people just HAVE dried pepper/sugar/salt in their kitchens)

This could feed me for four days at the very least.

    Total: $9.50
    Bonus stuff:
    5lbs of potatoes - $3
    2lbs of oat meal - $2
    vegetable oil - $1
    total: $15.50

Yeah, beans are cheap and go a long way. When I was a kid we had beans and cornbread for dinner nearly every night. It was always awesome when we got chili instead.

Here's an idea; try the farmer's market before it closes, at the end of the day; the farmer's are usually reluctant to take produce back with them and are likely to either barter and get rid of what they have or may be willing to give you some things for free. I noticed this when I went late one day and was met with a lot of generosity. It's a nice way to help people out.

I'm constantly looking to align the real with the ideal.I've been more oriented toward being overly idealistic by expecting the real to match the ideal. My thinking side is dominent. The result is that sometimes I can be overly impersonal or self-centered in my approach, not being understanding of others in the process and simply thinking "you should do this" or "everyone should follor this rule"..."regardless of how they feel or where they're coming from"which just isn't a good attitude to have. It is a way, though, to give oneself an artificial sense of self-justification. LSE
