Ni has nothing to do with propensity to predict: big or small, long or short term. Neither does any other function. Every type can plan, every type can worry about the future, and make predictions. Propensity for such may be related to the enneagram. But even theoretically, Ni types least of all predict over small matters (since it is supposed to be the 'big picture' function). If anything, Ni PoLRs are the ones more commonly known to make such predictions. And even then it can be argued that the busier is a person, and the more bogged down with responsibilities and obligations, the more they are forced to plan to the minute, and the more frustrating it is that delays occur. That Ni PoLRs are detail-oriented, active Ejs only exacerbates this as a feature of the Ni PoLR, when it is probably something every busy person with a full schedule has to manage.

So again, as I've asked before, I wonder how to differentiate between 'Ni is the function that makes predictions' versus 'The time dimension of a base function means that you're able to make future predictions about that base function.'
I've written in a prior post in this thread how I think Te combined with Si comes up with predictions. Apparently Ni sees general trends and makes predictions based on that, if you want to contrast it in this manner.

InkStrider, I feel like you are just going around and finding opinions about Ni that contradict your own and trying to strike them down in order to relieve yourself of cognitive dissonance and the feeling that you have a flaw. I dont know if that is true or not thats just what it looks like to me based on all your posts you have about Ni. Regardless of whether I was right or wrong earlier, you have only been getting fragments of what Ni is right, as if an Ni polr is the best person to discern what Ni is. You may be able to say what Ni isnt but I dont have any idea why you would try and define what Ni is or for that matter get in an argument over what it is with non-Ni polrs. First off, Ni is obviously not JUST pattern recognition because pattern recognition is basic to human perception and prediction doesnt fit well enough nor does it adequately define what Ni is. For example: I have a somewhat large synthesis (in my head) over the dynamic of human nature and its entropic properties. When I have that dynamic properly discerned I can move along that synthesis and can use it as a sort of algorithm and thats the closest to prediction it gets. Its not prediction with any amount of uncertainty because it either must work that way or the whole thing is wrong. That synthesis is basically a product of Ni paired with Te. Ni allows me to establish the perception and Te allows me to concrete it and fully back it up.

He is not completely wrong on what he is saying, he is just cutting it down a bit too much. He seems to not have a proper conception of Ni (not that I expect him to) but he seems very adamant with what he wants it to be. At least adamant enough to start arguments about it. He seems very concerned to let people know that Ni is not pattern recognition or prediction as if its going to kill him if people use those terms or actually think thats what Ni is. I know that if I ever call Ni pattern recognition Im just generalizing because its easier than explaining it all of the time.It annoys me that's all.

Regardless of how we define Ni, it's something that gets stronger with more experience and more information. If we assume that Ni really does have something to do with predicting a trend, you would be less able to make predictions in an area that you weren't interested in and had no knowledge about.

You know, I was going to go answer the 'how old are you' thread, and I forgot. But that's relevant. A lot of people here in this forum are still relatively young (and I'm saying this because I just turned 37 and I often forget that many people are younger than I am). Whenever you're young, you haven't learned a lot of stuff that you will eventually know; and even someone's strongest function won't be as strong as it will be a couple decades later. Anyway, whatever someone's Ni is doing, no matter who they are, it might not be as obvious or easy to understand when they're younger.

This is probably totally irrelevant. I don't actually know why I'm even bringing it up. Oh well.

what exactly do we mean when we say "prediction" here... do we include probabilistic and stochastic estimations of the likelihood of a broad range of outcomes..? if so, it's pretty safe to say everybody does a massive lot of it throughout a normal day.

I don't think I'm terribly good at the timing of what I see will happen in the future, but I think I can see the possibilities of what might happen and build in flexibility to allow for adapting to those possibilities.

If I was less unfocused I probably could do more with this knowledge.

Even moreso I can instantly see the motivation and intentions of others in such a way that I can usually tell what their next move is going to be. I'm often not surprised by anything anymore. Once I have figured out a person's nature then their behaviour becomes a pattern that loops over and over.

Basically people are predictable to me in terms of relationships whether that be international relationships or romantic relationships or co-worker relationships. After spending time with someone I quickly grasp their limitations. Their general feelings may change but their objective behaviour becomes painfully obvious to me.

I do not mean to say I can tell everything that happens but moreso I can sense any major change or lack thereof. I suppose that would be a prediction in the sense that I can see how the beginning of something will or will not alter the end.

    any thoughts??
This is related to Ni/Si combination.

I'm constantly looking to align the real with the ideal.I've been more oriented toward being overly idealistic by expecting the real to match the ideal. My thinking side is dominent. The result is that sometimes I can be overly impersonal or self-centered in my approach, not being understanding of others in the process and simply thinking "you should do this" or "everyone should follor this rule"..."regardless of how they feel or where they're coming from"which just isn't a good attitude to have. It is a way, though, to give oneself an artificial sense of self-justification. LSE
