I feel like every restaurant gives entirely too much food but I have to finish everything on my plate or I feel like I'm throwing money away.

I bring the leftovers home and put them in the fridge. They always seem to disappear.

Noooo. Portions aren't too big. I don't think I have a normal sized appetite though. And I'm definitely not overweight (5'9 and 135-140). I went out to eat with 6-7 other women not long ago, and sort of felt like a pig, because I literally ate twice as much as anyone else, and left hungry, while they were all saying how full they were. I tend to take a famine or feast approach though, ignoring hunger and then eating a ton at once. Everyone says "grazing" is healthier, but well, cows graze . And it just becomes tedious to try to spread calories throughout the day, makes it seem like you're eating constantly and never totally full or totally empty. Turns it into a chore trying to get enough calories down.

How physically active you are will directly affect your appetite, obviously. A healthy appetite IS healthy. (I'm not talking about jabba the hut people who eat for no reason but to eat.)

It's better too much than too little I guess.. you can always take away. Some ppl choose to eat 1-2 BIG meals instead of your average 3 med. plus snacks, or they have a decent appetite/ metabolism. e.g My step-grandad is skinny as a bird but he can eat 2 full plates of dinner in one sitting, cause he doesn't eat much else during the day except coffee. In Brazil most restaurants are pay-per-kilo buffets, so you can choose what/ how much you eat, solving the problem for every1.. They'd catch on in the US.

it's prob diff in the US (being the most overweight country in the world etc) but here some places have small portion sizes. it also depends on the ethnicity of the food, like chinese, korean, japanese have smaller serving sizes. thai has medium, indian has large. french is small, european has too many potatoes, but overall kind of medium sized, mexican tends to be small as well..

i eat lots of indian food, which tends to have decent portion sizes, but some of the cheaper places have more oil/coconut milk and less food. also some places serve less food at lunch time.

what i've noticed about larger people here is that they tend to snack a lot through the day. like they'll have a meal, then a couple of hours later have a tub of icecream, then have some more food in a couple more hours etc. which isn't too bad if you have a little here and there, but if you have a lot of food when you snack, seems to be when people put on weight especially with people who eat while watching tv, and other sedentry activities.

Me too. I don't get hungry in the morning until several hours of awake time. Usually 3 or 4. So I end up eating two larger meals and sometimes if I'm up late a small meal late at night. Unless there is a really appetizing breakfast made early I don't usually eat breakfast. Supposedly it's not as healthy.

I can't function if I don't eat breakfast. But yeah, I know a larger person who complains daily about her weight and if you see her eat in public, it's super healthy food but when she's alone, she finish boxes of cookies. That's gross. I think I'm getting my cravings under control because I've started taking diet pills which are basically speed. I've already lost 5 lbs

I think I'm getting the cravings as I've started taking speed which is basically like diet pills. I lose 5 lbs taking a dump.

I eat, then I go around the tables looking for leftovers. If still hungry, I eat the cook and fuck the waitress. I might tip that whore if she puts up a decent fight, but I won't call back.

But on serious note I rarely leave leftovers unattended and will condemn those who do. I'm such a ecojesus.

I have gained (and lost and gained and lost and...) a lot of weight since moving to the U.S. 12 years ago. Whenever I go home to visitfamily in Germany, I eat all the things I miss and I don't control what I eat (like I do here) and almost always lose weight and never gain, despitedesserts and all that good stuff. There is something about the food in the U.S. that messes with my metabolism although I am pretty health-conscious. It is mind-boggling how much I can eat over there vs. what I can eat here (and I rarely eat fast food or processed foods). As for the topic, I love large portions because they give me a second/third meal. If you are worried about eating too much, you can always ask for a box when the food comes and box half of it before you start eating. When bf and I go out to eat, we often share an entree to save money and it's enough for both of us.

The food is better in Europe, especially France. God I watched French food safari on youtube & I was soooo jealous of people who live there. Europe uses locally grown fresh ingredients. I think American food in general is factory made & calorie dense.. quantity > quality.. so they crave more, food isn't satisfying.
The zone pyramid (below) is the best i've seen. In comparison 2 the USDA food pyramid's or "official health guide." its's purpose is to cater to the wheat & corn industry. They recommend 6-11 servings of bread or cereals per day! I heard they're going to list pizza as the "vegetable" part of the cafeteria menu. ridiculous.

Italian food is immensely better than French food. We do everything the french can do, and all lots and lots of less caloric and more fresh / less creamy-like stuff.

And let's not even talk about the cheeses and wine. French cheese is like fatty chewing-gum, except maybe Brie. Frenchs wine are overpriced colored water, except those grown in the southernmost regions like Languedoc, Midi Pyrénées or Provençe.

I forgot that in other countries, you don't' bring leftovers home. Here in the US, it's expected that you do. One time I didn't and they asked me if I didn't like the food and said if I hadn't liked it I didn't have to pay for it.

I like French food, but it lacks spices, I think Spanish food is really good as is Italian and some French derivatives like Vietnamese. I generally prefer Italian wine to French and it's cheaper, not a cheese person since in my 20's I was quite lactose intolerant.

I generally like East Asian cuisine > European tho.

Chinese is really good and varied, but I think it's not easy to get good Chinese in the US and outside of China.

Dim Sum, Chinese style BBQ, Chinese style braised dishes(such as braised pork belly) are some stuff you can find relatively unaltered.

Stir Fry is great, but if you want to try relatively unchanged Chinese recipes, you should look for the words, "Braised", "Stewed", "Roasted".

There's been a lot of alteration to the more easily cooked stir fry dishes and there is a lot of changes that have occured in these dishes as well as more of a sweet taste vs a more balanced flavor profile in more unaltered Chinese cuisine.

I'm not a purist and I like junky Chinese food too, but imo Chinese food is more sour/bitter/pungent and balanced. Ketchup(one of those things even the Chinese use now for sweet and sour) is perfectly acceptable imo in sweet and sour pork sauce, but less sweet and more sour imo is better.

Also, there's very little breaded Chinese food. Most deep fried chinese dishes is supposed to be just a dusting of Corn/Tapioca/Potato starch, and not crusted.

Also bone in > boneless, with the fat and tendon on > all lean.

My fav chinese food is actually a small family-owned take-away place where only the kids (15-20 yo) speak italian so I think it's the "right" chinese food. I especially enjoy the spiciness!

It's quite similar to the chinese food my ex chinese flatmates from Beijing used to cook. It kinda seems to be me that italian and chinese family traditions are more similar compared chinese and US, where US is kind of more individualistic (which is very good in many instances, I'm not trying to impose a value judgement on such similarity or lack thereof). For example they used to spend quite a "long" time in the kitchen, whereas our nordic kitchen-mates would almost exclusively eat readily-made dishes. Of course part of the similarity is simply due to the fact that since a few decades ago both China and Italy were really poor places...

I think Chinese culture and Italian culture are similar in many ways. Both very old cultures as well.

I think the cooking is very similar too, and I think Italian cooking suits Chinese tastes a lot more then French. There's a lot of family style cooking in both cultures and a lot of one dish starch + sauce kind of dishes which is filling and rustic.

Maybe it's Marco Polo and noodles or what not, but noodles and sauce is an universally translatable dish.

Also, IMO, Chinese, Spanish and Italian(amongst others) cuisine have adopted new world Ingredients like the chili and tomato a lot better then French. Even French Cuisine that incorporate these ingredients are more Italian in nature.
