I do see how the archetypal gentleman in those times would be LSE or LIE.

I think it more fitting that LxEs are the supreme embodiment of their respective periods in history, rather than the converse being the case, wherein some historical period is the supreme embodiment of LxEs.

British history is unique, in that, for once, the two tendencies are symmetrical and run side by side.

I doubt that anybody was forced to act any particular way, but it isn't hard to imagine that males were expected to act all .
