    Default The best compliment

I think the best compliment is to do with the polr. And a dislikes compliment is about the role function

FDG (ENTj) said he likes people calling him good looking. is his polr.

Sycophant (INTp) said she hates people saying she is good looking. is her role function.

    What do you think?

Well, I don't take compliments on my health as something that is wonderful. I am tempted to say "appreciation for a job well done", but I don't really think that is it. Compliments, exhanges of them...... not really my bag, I guess, so I don't know.

"oh my GOD... that was sooooo gooooood... "
I always like hearing that, but..... well......
I don't know if that really applies, or if so, how much...

There are many people who think that when you compliment them on their looks you're making fun of them.

If the person being complimented doesn't feel good about how they look at the moment, then any compliment saying that they look good is going to be perceived negatively.

I think the most of compliments from people who I feel have acquired some latitude for giving it. For example if someone I think has great taste tells me they like my style, Im very glad. If somebody asks me for advice in an area of cofidence then again its a compliment. If someone hints at my greater potential in certain areas thats good too Heck if a stranger on the streets gives me an admiring look...thats a compliment. OK so I just take it were I can get it.

Ah I very much agree Hugo. I really love when people say things like:

"You are a really nice person."

That is great it makes me beam.

I don't like being complimented on my appearance unless it's by someone who I want to to attracted to me. Generally compliments about my being interesting or smart are received well as long as there isn't an ulterior motive.

I have problems accepting verbal compliments I usually feel people who compliment me expect certain kind of reaction which I am unable to produce.

The same thing is with receiving gifts. I love Christmas but I don't like the part where we open the presents and everybody expects certain kind of reactions.

I can read compliments from body language pretty well which is much more convenient than receiving them verbally. There are exceptions though. Some people can give verbal compliments in such a way it is easier to accept them without feeling a bit ackward.

I can partly relate to what implied wrote I think. The better I know and trust the people the easier it is to accept compliments.

What kind of compliments I like most? Hmm...basically I like any "compliments" that I can read from the body language. Whether it is about how I look or about something I did. Most of all I guess I like to feel I have helped someone or given something special to someone and they really appreciate it. I would think this has more to do with hidden agenda than PoLR but I'm not sure.

    Ditto.

    In order, I'd say

    1) Loveable/ "Have that something"
    2) Funny
    3) Smart
    4) Good looking
But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...

Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Under cerulean skies...

I disagree, or at least I think it's not the whole story --

Sycophant has as PoLR and that would make her suspicious about people's intentions or sincerity when making compliments, especially about her looks if in the context of that being more important than her intelligence.

I also like being called good-looking. But I dislike being told I have a great taste in clothing, or in food, for instance, because I don't care about such matters and tend to think the person is being manipulative.

My role function is and I don't have particular feelings for compliments in that area one way or the other.

I think that the compliments I like the most are related to my hidden agenda: "you are successful".

As Expat said (why do I always agree with the ENTjs?), I prefer compliments relating to my hidden agenda... "you really understand...", "you have a good grasp of the subject..." etc. etc.

As for external activity of objects, though... I consider "facts" and outward behaviour to be superficial at best. Being complimented on my grasp of the facts/etc. would be as bad as being accused of being superficial... I would be more likely to feel offended.

As far as looks though, I dislike criticism but I meet compliments with skepticism and either way, comments about my appearance/health/aesthetics/etc. make me very agitated.

is your role function, so that would confirm Hugo's theory.

I can't say that it applies to me though. A role function compliment would be something like "you really know how to deal with people", which would not disturb me at all.

No, probably because some of you (though not all) tend to be more coherent than a lot of people.

I just had a thought that you could be thinking of there, is ethics of groups and of individuals, right?

Then again, role function is likely to be different from role function.

    .
The way I see it, my role function is usually described as but actually means - + .

    - is about not ethics (in terms of principles), but about the emotional state of groups of people, expressing my own emotions accordingly, creation of an emotional atmosphere with several people;
+ is about understanding the emotional state of an individual, as well as my relationships with them.

So I think it's fair to say that my role function is about "dealing with people".

    My dual-seeking function, usually described as , actually means - + .

    - is the one about ethics, moral estimations, principles, morals etc
+ is the one about personal emotions, sensitivity, expression of emotions towards an individual.

So I think that when people say that is about personal ethics, they refer to - only, and when they say that is about being emotional, they refer to + only, but in Model A descriptions these two are usually described simply as .

Hmm, I didn't really explain myself

I though if you were referring to dealing with individual people, Hugo's theory might hold still, but I see what you mean.

I agree that you can't really consider with it's equivalent (same with the other pairs, too).
