On the contrary, I figured it out carefully and compared notes with another LII.

I googled it, and found a site that listed it among other problems. I don't know whether that was your source.

Yep, that site I found was an AIME archive...

    Hi, Flame!

m has to be an integer that can be multiplied by both 5 and 7 to make them divisible by the length of the cube's sides. Since 5 and 7 are prime, that number has to be 12 (the length of the cube's sides).

I would help, but a mass of Alpha nonsense is probably the one thing you don't need...

PoLR war? I'm a desert man, myself. Favorite temperatures 80-90 Fahrenheit... if it gets down to 70, I'm wearing a jacket.

Now, I may as well solve the more difficult problem of making that problem unsolveable, but still allowing the line to hit edges of the cube. The naive answer is to change the 5 or the 7 to Pi, thus making the light only hit four vertices. And in fact, that is the only answer, because in order to hit an edge, two elements of the vector...

Ah, I'd better explain the vector. The light beam's direction is [12,5,7] - the distance the line travels in each direction.

...must be multiplied by the same number X (rational or irrational) to become divisible by 12. Any such number X can be converted to any other such number X by multiplication by a rational number. Thus, given any such number for one pair of edges X and any such number for the other pair of edges Y, both X and Y will be divisible by the same real number Z, and multiplying the vector by the value X*Y/Z will cause it to reach a vertex. Thus, if the light ray cannot reach a vertex, it cannot reach more than four edges of the cube (proof by contradiction).

There. Some of you might be able to decipher that with some effort.

I'm tired of making sense. Given a cactus farm in Minnesota guarded by a horde of rabid beagles, how would you go about rescuing a mule trapped in said cactus farm?

Yes, go ahead and rip me to shreds, it will give you a sense of unity.

Here's how I think of it: instead of reflecting the line, reflect the cube infinitely through space. When the light bounces off a side of the cube, it's basically the same as it going into a new, identical cube. So you can imagine the light going straight, and passing through a bunch of cubes until it hits a vertex.

Default Gamma is still the most dead forum - why?

Alpha, Beta, and Delta each all have at least twice as much activity.
