People that troll are often smarter than the other people and get their kicks out of corrupting the perceived etiquette of the forum.
They most enjoy remarks such as "alright, just ignore the troll!" or "Oh, looks like we got a troll on our hands!" cause its funny.

a troll is a person that starts open ended arguments, hateful messages, anything that can cause trouble. just so they can argue about anything.what does this term mean? I keep hearing it but I never heard a definition of any sort.
i think it comes from a fishing term.
usually i'll stay out of trolling, but sometimes it can be fun just to have an arguement.

Just being argumentative or bitter is lame. I think the "best" trolls get people to realize a problem or sway people to their beliefs without explicitly arguing that point. There's a lot of misdirection and possibly misinformation... it pretty much turns into propagandizing depending on the issue.

Yeah trolling is a fishing term. I think it has to do with dragging your line in order to catch prey--often used in small boats... let me go look it up to be 100% sure =p

sometimes they can give info, but it may not be at all accurate. and sometimes they are a real person, but become a troll because no one understands the question, and due to frustration it's better to just nuke em. they aren't always that smart either. many are just plain stupid. i belong to one board where he compares different types of camera's just to incite a riot. his facts are based on his logic, and the facts are far from accurate.Is it always just arguing "about anything"? what if they are revealing important information? If and only if they are indeed "smart" then I can see how learning can take place. If malice is driving the fishing line...then yeah, that is not pretty to watch, and it gets old fast. I think I like trolls too. They are sort of the reflection of anything laughable in life, like the town drunk, that random street preacher or that sarcastic old coot.

Trolls ought to be ignored. People who hide behind guest accounts aren't worth their bandwidth.
