Default Ted Kaczynski - the unabomber

    Probably LII.

http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Indust...and_Its_Future Here we can see that he's clearly a Negativist.

I can't understand the mentality behind this, or the Italian Unabomber. Clearly he had a problem with society as a whole, hence his not attacking specific individuals but rather those chosen at random. On the other hand, he might've found a detail about each individual that he didn't like; say if he'd been stalking them or something, and he thought "I didn't like the way she responded to that shopkeeper" or "I don't like his second name" as he looks in the phonebook for his next victim.

But if someone's read Industrial Society and Its Future, a quick summary of his reasoning would be greatly appreciated.

I've read he would probably be diagnosed with schizoid personality disorder - a lack of desire/enjoyment for social relationships and general emotional detachment

I have only skimmed through Industrial Society and Its Future, and I would have to read it in more detail to be 100 % sure, but it seems to be typically LII, both in structure and in content.

I read it at the time, when it was first published, before he was caught.

In as far as I recall, it's about how large-scale technology can only work with an increasing central organization, and so reduce people's freedom, even to the state of "domestic animals", which you are today. So the way to restore human freedom is to shut down large-scale technology. There are also long tirades against "leftists", as people who should not participate in the movement.

As for his type: LII I think (I had already included him in a "Famous INTjs" thread).

The Unabomber - Kaczinsky - wasn't attacking people fully at random; he was attacking high-tech professionals. How random he selected his targets among the latter, I don't know.

Yeah..I remember when watching Terminator 2 and he just goes through the phonebook to basically eliminate those with the surname Connor, that I wonder if someone could do that IRL, like giving someone the idea of a copycat type meaningless killing agenda. Thankfully it's never happened as I know, a reason to go ex-directory I suppose.

Does an LII actually believe that? I don't think there are such things as "copycat" killings: the person has the motive to kill already; the source material offers only a way to conduct the killing effectively. By that logic we should avoid mentioning any kind of violence in any kind of medium, because its method might be implemented in a real killing.

Kazynsky was LII, ... I'd call him a schizotype, actually.

That sounds much more correct than schizoid. He exhibits clear schizotypal traits, and that one psychiatrist diagnosed him with paranoid schizophrenia is also in line with his overall personality.

I think LII fits him better. Not only does he look LII to me, I doubt if an ILI would write a huge manifesto describing his reasons for why he thinks society is screwed up. Plus, letter bombs are pretty anti-Se.

Why do you think an attack on society through a manifesto is indicative of LII>ILI?

Kaczynski's approach was more rational (I'm doing this for the greater good), abstract (I'm using the Post Office to send bombs, how appropriate to use the machinery of the State to destroy the State!), and rules-oriented (manifesto-justified!) than what might set off an ILI. With an ILI, it's personal. An ILI is more likely to shoot you in the face in a dark alley, or with a sniper rifle from a distance. He's gonna want to make sure you are dead.

Kaczynski was anything but anti-Se, nor was he lacking in "concreteness". Not only did he use an aggressive approach to further his views in society, he carefully produced the bombs with his own hands, and was very much a survivalist, live-off-the-land kind of person. No shortage of Si or Te there, but with a distinctive Beta extreme ideological bent. Read the manifesto, he's LSI.

Ted Kaczynski was born on May 22, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, the oldest child of a Polish-American couple, Wanda and Theodore. As a baby, Kaczynski had an allergic reaction to some medication and spent time in isolation while recovering. Some reports indicate that he had a noticeable change in personality after being hospitalized. The arrival of his younger brother, David, also allegedly had a strong effect on him.

The reasons that leftists give for hating the West, etc. clearly do not correspond with their real motives. They SAY they hate the West because it is warlike, imperialistic, sexist, ethnocentric and so forth, but where these same faults appear in socialist countries or in primitive cultures, the leftist finds excuses for them, or at best he GRUDGINGLY admits that they exist; whereas he ENTHUSIASTICALLY points out (and often greatly exaggerates) these faults where they appear in Western civilization. Thus it is clear that these faults are not the leftist's real motive for hating America and the West. He hates America and the West because they are strong and successful.

    16. Words like "self-confidence," "self-reliance," "initiative," "enterprise," "optimism," etc., play little role in the liberal and leftist vocabulary. The leftist is anti-individualistic, pro-collectivist. He wants society to solve everyone's problems for them, satisfy everyone's needs for them, take care of them. He is not the sort of person who has an inner sense of confidence in his ability to solve his own problems and satisfy his own needs. The leftist is antagonistic to the concept of competition because, deep inside, he feels like a loser.

    17. Art forms that appeal to modern leftish intellectuals tend to focus on sordidness, defeat and despair, or else they take an orgiastic tone, throwing off rational control as if there were no hope of accomplishing anything through rational calculation and all that was left was to immerse oneself in the sensations of the moment.

His manifesto repeatedly addresses themes of power, power relations, effort, autonomy, etc. These are not things LIIs spend a lot of time thinking about. He literally denies that curiosity and benefiting humanity are motivations that exist - he claims that most people are motivated by the simple fact of making effort towards a goal.

"Science and technology provide the most important examples of surrogate activities. Some scientists claim that they are motivated by “curiosity” or by a desire to “benefit humanity.” But it is easy to see that neither of these can be the principal motive of most scientists. As for “curiosity,” that notion is simply absurd. Most scientists work on highly specialized problems that are not the object of any normal curiosity. For example, is an astronomer, a mathematician or an entomologist curious about the properties of isopropyltrimethylmethane? Of course not. Only a chemist is curious about such a thing, and he is curious about it only because chemistry is his surrogate activity. Is the chemist curious about the appropriate classification of a new species of beetle? No. That question is of interest only to the entomologist, and he is interested in it only because entomology is his surrogate activity. If the chemist and the entomologist had to exert themselves seriously to obtain the physical necessities, and if that effort exercised their abilities in an interesting way but in some nonscientific pursuit, then they wouldn’t give a damn about isopropyltrimethylmethane or the classification of beetles.

    88. The "benefit of humanity" explanation doesn't work any better. Some scientific work has no conceivable relation to the welfare of the human racesmost of archaeology or comparative linguistics for example. Some other areas of science present obviously dangerous possibilities. Yet scientists in these areas are just as enthusiastic about their work as those who develop vaccines or study air pollution. Consider the case of Dr. Edward Teller, who had an obvious emotional involvement in promoting nuclear power plants. Did this involvement stem from a desire to benefit humanity? If so, then why didn't Dr. Teller get emotional about other "humanitarian" causes? If he was such a humanitarian then why did he help to develop the H-bomb? As with many other scientific achievements, it is very much open to question whether nuclear power plants actually do benefit humanity. Does the cheap electricity outweigh the accumulating waste and the risk of accidents? Dr. Teller saw only one side of the question. Clearly his emotional involvement with nuclear power arose not from a desire to "benefit humanity" but from a personal fulfillment he got from his work and from seeing it put to practical use.

    89. The same is true of scientists generally. With possible rare exceptions, their motive is neither curiosity nor a desire to benefit humanity but the need to go through the power process: to have a goal (a scientific problem to solve), to make an effort (research) and to attain the goal (solution of the problem.) Science is a surrogate activity because scientists work mainly for the fulfillment they get out of the work itself. "

"But for most people it is through the power process — having a goal, making an AUTONOMOUS effort and attaining the goal — that self-esteem, self-confidence and a sense of power are acquired. When one does not have adequate opportunity to go through the power process the consequences are (depending on the individual and on the way the power process is disrupted) boredom, demoralization, low self-esteem, inferiority feelings, defeatism, depression, anxiety, guilt, frustration, hostility, spouse or child abuse, insatiable hedonism, abnormal sexual behavior, sleep disorders, eating disorders. etc."

This is not the thinking of an Se vulnerable type.

Anyone watch the Netflix documentary? He apparently skipped grades in school and had a PHD by 25. So he had a lot of trouble relating with people and had no one close. But had a hatred of many aspects of society. Sounds pretty schizoid.

Yes, you take a kid who is already socially awkward at 16 and place him with 18 year olds. He was also part of MK Ultra. The CIA mind control program. They broke him. That was the purpose of the experiments. Mind control. Break people and put them back together whatever way you choose. They told him his ideas were half baked rip offs. He was a pseudo intellectual. Stuff like that. To a person whose entire value was their mind, this was a deep blow and he never forgot it. You just don't fuck with people like the Una Bomber and expect to get away with it. lol.

I kinda like the the guy and find him funny. Like when he found out his brother got married. lol. He didn't show up at the wedding of course. He mocked his brother through a phone call. Saying he sold out. lol. It was the wife of this brother who busted him. When they printed the manifesto to the public, the sister in law noticed it was him. Same themes. Same language. He was busted by the words he used. His sister in law read it and is like, "I have heard this shit before."

Catching him was quite an amazing story. They had the wrong profile for years. They thought he was an airline mechanic at best. They had no idea the intellect they were dealing with. It was interesting that through the structure and content of his language, they could narrow in on him. Like the way he wrote his letters were from a time in in the past how people did PHD work. So they could tell he got his PHD during X time span. Start there. Now we are looking for a guy who has a phd in this certain time frame in the past. He also always said, eat your cake and have it too. WHich is the reverse of the normal saying but actually the correct way of saying it that few people still know or use. So the unabomber was using the phrase correctly and most people use it wrong. Things like this add up. Quirks. Forensic linguistics.

Fitzgerald recalls how a transposition of verbs in the manifesto written by the Unabomber helped lead to a closer identification of Ted Kaczynski in April 1996.

The latter used the phrase "You can't eat your cake and have it, too," instead of the usual form, which is "You can't have your cake and eat it, too." Like most people, Mr. Fitzgerald thought Kaczynski had made a mistake. But examination of other letters by him contained a similar feature, which, Mr. Fitzgerald says, "is actually a traditionally middle English way of using the term. He technically had it right and the rest of us had it wrong. It was one of the big clues that allowed us to make the rest of the comparison and submit a report to the judge who signed off on a search warrant."

It really shows how little they had on the guy when the way he used a phrase was enough to get a warrant. The judge was like WTF. I think it was the first of its kind. It set a legal precedent. We all have a unique linguistic fingerprint. Basically, a new type of criminal science had to be invented to catch him.

It was very personal with him. They wronged him. Shooting people in the way you describe does not create terror. Mail bombs do. It was a practical consideration. It fuckin worked and they had no fucking clue who was doing it, or why. The authorities saw no pattern in his attacks. It fits with his skill set as well. The way he talks in his manifesto about everything being about power makes him sound like Nietzsche, who also hated anti naturalism.

He refused to plead insanity. His lawyers and the cops both pressured him to do so but he wouldn't. Why? Because he isn't insane. There is nothing insane about his ideas. To plead insanity would be to betray all the work he did. His entire ideology. It would be like Socrates or Jesus repenting to avoid the consequences.

I think so too. Google searches with accounts from people in his prison say he was reclusive, in his head all the time, and does not like talking to people, despite being in solitary confinement for the rest of his life.

I just can't believe (though I shouldn't) the CIA was involved in messing with his head. It wouldn't surprise me if they were a big catalyst in making him the unabomber. I really kind of feel bad for him. He wasn't properly socialized in his youth and everything that followed in his adulthood made things worse. Did you know he's a virgin? And he's been in solitary confinement for his life in prison. So he has been effectively completely isolated from humanity when that was arguably what screwed him up to begin with. I know his victims would probably completely disagree with me, but it just doesn't seem right. But I guess that's life.

Yes, it almost certainly caused it. MK Ultra thing. This was somewhat common in those days. Use college kids for psych experiments without ethics. Like the Stanford Prison and Milgram experiments.

Kant, Newton and Tesla died virgins too.

You mentioned you watched the Netflix series. I never saw that one. My info is coming from a series from Discovery Channel. Netflix got the rights to it later though and it streamed it though so we probably saw the same one. Definitely worth watching imo.

lol. the infamous pic of him is not even him. this case was bungled so bad.

. Manhunt: Unabomber, a new Discovery series that retraces the investigation, makes the claim that the Utah woman who described the Unabomber to Boylan was actually recalling another sketch artist who allegedly drew a different composite years prior. Over time, the show says, their faces blended together in her mind. "She was remembering remembering the Unabomber," says Sam Worthington, who plays FBI profiler James Fitzgerald. "She had spent — think about it — three seconds looking at the Unabomber, but she spent the whole afternoon with [the artist]."

His manifesto has some interesting (and valid) critique of modern society. Technological progress has led to widespread psychological suffering, and people do tend to invent frivolous goals for themselves (World of Warcraft).

Unfortunately his conclusion is "just f*** it all up until it destroys itself". He doesn't give any way to replace it with something better (low Ne).

I wonder if politicians like Bannon, Putin, etc. were taking a page from him.

When he says, “Leftists tend to hate anything that has an image of being strong, good and successful,” one thinks of Nietzsche, who often castigated those who were resentful of the strong and successful. There’s a Nietzschean ring to many of the Unabomber’s arguments, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the Unabomber admired Nietzsche. When the Unabomber says that The Left opposes rankings/hierarchies, one thinks of Nietzsche’s fondness for rankings/hierarchies.

The Unabomber’s remarks on “over-socialization” were influenced, according to Wikipedia, by Freud, especially Freud’s Civilization and Its Discontents. Freud’s rational approach would be congenial to the Unabomber, while Jung’s approach would be uncongenial. Like many of the Unabomber’s ideas, the idea of “over-socialization” reminds one of Nietzsche. Nietzsche never tired of lambasting the “herd animal” and praising the solitary “beast of prey.”

    I like his influences. lol.

Ne is not just Intuition of Possibilities, but also Intuition of Impossibilities. Ne, in fact is not in the first place about possibilities and impossibilities, but about essence. By separating the essential aspects of a phenomenon from the non-essential aspects, the person strong in Ne can estimate how the variable non-essential aspects of a phenomenon can be changed to get to another state, but it is recognized that such changes are within a certain bandwidth. Because the variable aspects are within a bandwidth, a phenomenon does not only have possibilities, but also impossibilities.

It is therefore possible for a person with strong Ne to arrive at a conclusion that significant change is more impossible than possible. I, at age 53, have learned so much about psychology and sociology by now, that I now can see why some things cannot be changed, things that I, in my youthful ignorance 30 years ago, thought could be changed. It all depends how many variables you can include in your grand narrative. More experience and more knowledge means better understanding of the essentials and non-essentials, especially quantitatively.

Ergo, Kaczynski not offering alternatives is not evidence of low Ne.

Or he could be delegating the task. Telling like minded people what is wrong, and they find a way to fix it. He is just one link in the chain. It doesn't begin and end with him. He didn't begin this idea and he won't end it.

Similar to how Nietzsche called on a man of action to carry this shit out. Nietzsche couldn't build bombs or use his hands that way. He couldn't take care of himself or survive in the wild. lol. He needs a guy like the Unabomber to act.

“Forgetfulness is a property of all action. The man of action is also without knowledge: he forgets most things in order to do one, he is unjust to what is behind him, and only recognizes one law - the law of that which is to be.” -Nietzsche

And he requires shelter, for there are frightful powers which continuously break in upon him, powers which oppose scientific "truth" with completely different kinds of "truths" which bear on their shields the most varied sorts of emblems.

You have a magical wand you wave that allows you to get inside the head of others? Jung, the creators of Socionics, and people like yourself seem to think you do.

Socionics is based on the point of view of a few outsiders with little knowledge of the inner workings of people or science. Hence it is rejected and incompatible with science. It is a private language, like children form between themselves, that only exists between those two. Actually, they can't even communicate because none of the idiots can agree on a single definition. lol. Not a single classification. This thread is a perfect example. It is literally gibberish. It is like some creole language where various different peoples who don't know what they are talking about create a common language and disagree on every part of that language, resulting in nothing but futile, circular arguments. lol.

You can't even use socionics to communicate with others on a socionics forum. So, if it isn't useful here, where could it possibly be useful?

Why don't you and that guy who quoted you and disagrees with your take on Ne, debate it for a while? Tell me what comes of it. lol.

No way is this guy LII WTH lol

I was watching a series about him on Netflix a few days and was hoping there was a thread.

I was thinking he’s either LSI or ILI. Very clear Ni/Se values. 100% from a Central Quadra (Beta/Gamma). The manifesto does seem beta-ish, but if we consider gulenkos societal Quadra progression, I almost wonder if he would fit in Gamma better.

    4D Ti. Also obvious.

I wouldn’t say letter bombs are anti-Se, but it seems like an indirect Se route, which also makes me think he could be ILI-> 1D Se

anyway, I could see him being in my Quadra, guy makes scary sense to me

An LSI with particularly developed Ni. I understand the LII typings since he was obviously Ti-base IMO and he was more abstractly inclined than most LSI. His manifesto doesn't seem like something written by an irrational type, especially an Ni-base, and I think it's also evidence for Te-ignoring: he cared about being right in principle, but treated practical implementation as an afterthought/something he didn't care to pursue much. So I don't think ILI is possible.

I don't think my reasons for preferring LSI to LII are very convincing. They come down to an impression of his manifesto and to some extent his demeanor, but it's difficult to find words for this. I guess if I had to say something I'd say I don't see Ne in him.
