Perhaps one can compare the weaker functions with a foundation of a building, it’s possible to build a house ( ) only if it has a foundation that is strong enough to hold the construction. Developing the weaker functions (super-ego and super id) makes the strong functions feel more stable and safe and you don’t have to worry that the building could collapse at any time.
