I've often wondered this, since my brother is a needy extravert.
I think it's like an introvert's not being able to think when others are around. We can't focus on our inner world as well. For extraverts, it's like not being able to think because there are not others around.
I dont know but its very annoying when you have to share a place with an extrovert and they are constantly talking to you or themselves...they wont give you any freakin space...
It's hard to control this. My husband has his garage to go to when he needs quiet. Between me and our daughter there is always noise in this house.Originally Posted by So Crazy

You can't wake a person who is pretending to be asleep.
Just ignore them.
Well it's just I'm on the other side of things. I'm like freaking out because there is no one around at the moment, the residence hall is empty because everyone is out to the bars, classes end this week....... It is just like my first night home at thanksgiving, which was empty.
It is like you get this weird urge to interact with things. I'm fine, so long as my room mate is here or there is some commotion, or a bunch of people online even. But the TV is always on, to "keep company".
It really drives you insane, I don't get it. Like you have to look to find something to do, and it gets oddly quiet. I might just go to the library even though i don't have work to do, but at least there are "people" there. It is like interaction-withdraw syndrome.
Alas, there is salvation in doing laundry and other productive things![]()

I can feel like that sometimes too, but mroe often than not I have an extravert talking my ear off.

Same here and I'm an introvert.
I haven't noticed the freak out when alone thing really, but then again I've never been with an extrovert when they were alone.

Just awesome, because they have initiative and accept people as they are. They usually don't cause much conflict. They are easier to know.Originally Posted by LokiVanguard
i totally relate to this thread. i can't take much more than a day of being alone, although i have been known to spend an entire day reading. i'll go out "in the community" just to be around some hustle and bustle. this gets dangerous because then you tend to shop more what with seeing all those deals. somebody said we need other people to think...this is what it is for me.

If that is the case, then I'm not sure I'm an extravert. I've only felt a need to get out and talk to people after a few days alone.
SLE's don't seem extrovert very much. Most SLE's are withdrawn loners.Originally Posted by Ezra

Then I leave and think "Oh, good, the world's still here...Need sidewalk cafe..."
I find it really annoying when some extraverts do this. As I'm trying to withdraw and collect my thoughts, they keep taking me back into their noise-o-sphere and never let me go. My grandmother is the absolute worst: she''s a crazy, 81 year-old ENFj who just won't shut the fuck up about all her crack-pot theories about society and my friends, and insists on calling the television the tele because she thinks British talk is sophisticated. I just get depressed and quiet when alone. I don't get very chatty. I get chatty when I'm feeling hyper. Then nothing can stop me. (except one wrong word from an istp and then I'm insulted and depressed. And back to quiet.)

I think I have had like two "alone days" in last 6 months or so. It is really frustrating really. I can pull it off but I would prefer a week alone in a deserted island at this point. During student days I did often spend time alone and I liked it. Eventually it just gets a little unhealthy and it is better to force yourself back to social life again.
So technically I would be an introvert then? However, when I am working in a room with other people or working in an open space I tend to act more like an extrovert. Kinda chatty and often disturbing people spontaneously. I have had many "introverts" saying to me that I disturb them all the time (which I do, hah). So I still don't know whether I am introvert or extrovert![]()
No. It's the case for all Interrogative (Questim) types. Interrogative types are feedback-seeking.Originally Posted by Salawa

And no, I'm not really depressed or miserable from 2 words from an ISTp. But I do think your post lacks style and decency.

Regarding the whole need for interaction for extraverts thing, some time ago I heard or read somewhere that one theory as to why extraverts like social contact whereas introverts prefer their own company is to do with brain activity levels (NOT related to intelligence in any way). It was something like introverts have naturally high brain activity levels, and so by keeping to themselves it keeps them from being psychologically drained or overloaded, whereas extraverts have naturally lower brain activity levels and so they desire social contact for that reason. It was a couple of years or so ago I came across this though so I don't have any web links to back up what I've just said.
