This question is twofold. Firstly, what function is used when one is concerned about how they appear to others? Secondly, is it a different function in the case of physical appearance and appearance of personality, or is it the same?

It probably depends on why they are concerned.

They want to advance within some group or organization
they want to meet potential sexual partners
they want to make friends
they want to find love
they want to contribute to the mood of a place (like restaurants with a dress code- it's to help the restaurant maintain a certain mood)

Also, our society has demands placed upon us by outside - anyone of any type has to deal with the above stresses and many more and therefore we all have some reason to want to look good. How much we care about it and why and in what scenario might tell something about type but anyone living in this society has reason to care about how they appear to others.
