I want to point out that the Saw movies are comedies, not horror. You don't even need to value Se to appreciate their sheer absurdity.

The "traps" are so overblown and ridiculous, the gore so unapologetic that it seems somehow baffling, and the ending twists so unintentionally comic that attending annual Saw premiers has become for me a celebration in absurdist comedy.

Ah, okay. I'll have to check it out. The synopsis sounded a little bloody, so I thought it would be too much but I have to see it.

Lies! There is lots of blood and disturbing images
    Oh. Is it good anyway?
I was laughing so hard when I saw your initial response. Leave it to Kelly to spoil anything good in life.

I had a bad feeling I was ruining a joke

I definitely don't spoil everything good in life.....my foot just visits my mouth often.

I wouldn't call the movies "good", but they are one of the only movies that scare me because I don't like to imagine being the object of someone's hate to that extent. I grimace at situations that seem impossible to escape, and having a clamp on your head that is going to snap shut if you don't bury a key out of your eye ball in time sounds fucking horrid. I'd much rather be in a situation where I can at least charge at my enemies with some sort of weapon. Not to mention it would piss me off to be subjected to it as well. After I got over the terror...

    Only seen 1 & 2 anyways...

    HOWEVER.

I just remembered the Polanski film Fearless Vampire Killers is a riot. Watch that one.
obviously you haven't seen The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Silent Hill, Hostel, Them... and that's just a few. the horror genre is in full revival. but you have to look for the good ones. sheep running around killing people? i'm not saying it ain't worth it but wtf? as for Saw, only the original deserves any mention.

Emily Rose was okay, but Silent Hill and especially Hostel were both terrible movies.

I'm going to ignore the non-gory part. This film was the last one that left quite an impression:

Several great horror movies not focused on gore:
The Gift, It Follows, The People Under the Stairs (some gore but more of a not-too-serious social commentary than a true horror), Rosemary's Baby, Honeymoon (it was ok)

I'm constantly looking to align the real with the ideal.I've been more oriented toward being overly idealistic by expecting the real to match the ideal. My thinking side is dominent. The result is that sometimes I can be overly impersonal or self-centered in my approach, not being understanding of others in the process and simply thinking "you should do this" or "everyone should follor this rule"..."regardless of how they feel or where they're coming from"which just isn't a good attitude to have. It is a way, though, to give oneself an artificial sense of self-justification. LSE

THE BABADOOK received a lot of critical praise.

It avoids most of the tired, misused conventions of the genre (excessive gore, random jump scares, etc.) and focuses more on the psychological aspects of horror and has a narrative that effectively builds tension and suspense. It's non-complicated and simple to understand. I personally thought it was kind of boring, but respected its ambition.

I have had this in my netflix queue for a long time but have been reluctant to watch it. It doesn't help that I watch netflix primarily at night while the house sleeps so maybe I will check it out during the day. I usually know within the first 15 minutes if I can tolerate a movie but something about this felt so creepy I was scared to look.

As one of the more critically acclaimed, original horror films of the past decade, it is definitely worth checking out for that alone. Though I didn't necessarily love or hate it, I have noticed that most viewers seem to have a strong reaction to it, one way or the other. I usually watch movies during the day as well [mostly because I'm falling asleep earlier as I get older], but it is probably better to watch this kind of film later in the evening as it just starts to get dark out.

I plan to give it a second viewing myself at some point.

OCULUS is another good recent horror find. Fairly original concept, avoidance of the usual tropes, surprisingly well acted, and with a story that builds to climax. Don't even watch any trailers. Just go search for it on Netflix if you have an account.

I have watched the two in bold too many times.

The scariest movie I have ever watched, to date, is "The Exorcist" and I have watched a lot of horror. I have mentioned that too many times though. I will turn off the tv or change channels as soon I seen a commercial. It destroyed a part of my childhood innocence. I understand now why children should not watch much horror without a parent or guardian to explain things.

A very disturbing but good movie is, "The Girl Next Door". I was horrified by what went down and how complicit children can be even if they have a strong conscience. It is loosely based on a true story.

This is the actual case but for those who might want to see the movie without prior knowledge don't read this.
