    Default The music topic.

Please post some bands/artists you listen to, why you like them, and two or three standout songs from each band. I want to expand and diversify my musical tastes a bit. I promise to try and listen to as much as I can. If you're against piracy, this isn't the topic for you. lol.

I'll start. I'll try not to name any obvious ones, like Pink Floyd or AC/DC. Or Black Sabbath, lol.

Journey - I love their ballads. Their music is clear and soaring. Some people think they're cheesy, but I don't mind them.

    Open Arms
    Wheel In The Sky
    Don't Stop Believing

Iron Maiden - These guys just kick ass. Their songs are so badass and cool sounding that it makes me want to turn into a demon just so I can kick ass with these guys.

    Remember Tomorrow
    Infinite Dreams
    The Evil That Men Do
Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son

Sublime - These guys bring up feelings of nostalgia. Makes me remember the early 90s, growing up as a wee lad. Great sound. Very Original. A little played out.

    40 oz. To Freedom
    Smoke Two Joints
What I Got (their most overplayed song)

NOFX - Punk at its finest. Pure cynicism. Classic themes. Some lousy vocals by lead singer Fat Mike, but it's got a charm that grows on you. Wonderful band.

    The Brews
    Dinosaurs Will Die
    Soul Doubt
    Bob
    Kill All The White Man

Simon & Garfunkel - Paul Simon is, in my opinion, the greatest American songwriter. Some of his music is so powerful it has brought me to tears. And Art Gerfunkel has one of the most beautiful voices you will ever hear. Legend.

    The Sound Of Silence
    Bridge Over Troubled Water
    The Boxer
    Mrs. Robinson
    El Condor Pasa

KMFDM - German Techno Metal. Pretty heavy, but it's brilliant. The music is badass and complex. The song structure is unpredictable. Great longevity.

    Light
    A Drug Against War
    Juke Joint Jezebel

Bad Religion - My favorite band. Something about their songs just clicks with me, even though I don't agree with their whole philosophy. I can listen to them all day. Brilliant lyrics, catchy music, great punk. Over 50 really good songs.

    American Jesus
    Forbidden Beat
    Generator
    Inner Logic
    Leaders And Followers
    Kyoto Now!
    Recipe For Hate
    (and like a million others)

    U2 - Sike, I hate U2.

Dave Murray was standing behind me back in May when I was in London. It was quite surreal.

Fiona Apple I have to be in the right mood to enjoy Fiona Apple, but she's got some of that jazz style but w/ better(i.e. less corny) lyrics.
    Get Him Back
    Paper Bag
    Slow Like Honey

Thrice I love "the Illusion of Safety" in it's entirety, but "the Artist in the Ambulance" has some great songs too. I just got their new CD, but I haven't listened to it enough to know whether I like it or not.
So Strange I Remember You (love the lyrics)
The Artist in the Ambulance (Wonder why I like this one...hmm?)
    Trust

Chevelle Hey, what type is the lead singer I wonder? He's hot. I discovered these guys in my christian-rock days and they're still going strong.
    Blank Earth
    Comfortable Liar
    Breach Birth
    (Putting quote in my sig.)

Gypsy Soul Am I the only one who's heard of them? Kinda folksy and poetic. Sometimes the lyrics get a tad cliche, but the good ones are just beautiful.
Talk to Me (My favorite love song ever.)
    The Snow, The Sea
    Won't Be Wronged

Sarah Vaughan I love jazz, but there's too many to choose from and they all sing the same bunch of songs, so Ms. Vaughan shall represent. She's got a great style, and I can usually hit most of her notes (or easily harmonize). Yay!

I discovered this woman one fine summer night - my friend put on her version of "Send in the Clowns." She's absolutely amazing. Love her voice and her nuances and everything she can do with a piece of music, no matter how schalzy or overdone. Good choice!

I would usually overwhelm you with my obsessive list of recommended artists, but my INFp idealism prevents me from guilt of piracy. Though, if you ask me, the best way to expand your musical taste is to go out and see some of the performances and concerts in your area.

    "The Divine Sarah Vaughan", huh?
Btw, when I said I could hit the notes, I mean I can flatter myself into having fun trying to match her vocal acrobatics.

Man, I feel really out of the mainstream. There's absolutely nothing I can contribute except for classical pieces that most of you couldn't care less about.

Mp3's are highly compressed and are crap compared to the sound that comes out of a factory pressed compact disc. It is a lossy audio format that robs a song of all its dynamic range and bass. Patronize your musicians! Especially if they're INFps... we're at the bottom wrung of society!

For some reason, I have had Mr. Brightside stuck in my head for weeks. The first time I heard that song I was totally creeped out, and I still am. It seems to grow on me a bit each time I hear it though.

My favorite song atm is Over My Head by The Fray. Before that it was Breathe by Anna Nalick. For some reason the song Collide reminds me of socionics... "I'm quiet you know. You make a frist impression. I've found I'm scared to know I'm always on your mind..."

So here are some other basic favorites:

    Evanescence
Partially, I like them because I like the music and lyrics very much. However, despite many people finding them depressive, I hear their songs and then I get inspired to go out and do something about the world.

    Favorites:
    Bring Me To Life
    Everybody's Fool
    My Immortal
    Tourniquet

    Within Temptation
They have a special style about them that I really like. I've got two CDs by them: Mother Earth is very Celtic in style, and The Silent Force is a bit darker.

    Favorites:
    Our Farewell
    The Swan Song
    Forsaken
    Jillian

    NightWish
    They just play beautiful music.

    Favorites:

    Alkaline Trio
    Old School Reasons
"I got these thoughts in my head
dirty as fuck and never leaving
    and then best left unsaid
    all the drinks under breath

got some shit off my chest
put on my back next to the monkey nest
    that somebody left
with me the day I was born

I got a hole in my head
the size of lake fuckin' michigan
    my pipes lined in lead
got old school reasons to die

    all my money's been spent
on a face lift via alochol
    this sinner repents
    to an empty bathroom reflection"

    Mr. Chainsaw
"I guess I should be one to talk
    There's nights that I can't even walk
    There's days I couldn't give a fuck
And in between is where I'm stuck"

    Sorry About That
"And maybe I just set aside
The fact that you were broken hearted
In my own special selfish way
And if I hadn't set aside
The fact that you were broken hearted
Hell knows where your heart would be today
    Maybe with me"

    We've Had Enough
"in the darkness where the angels cry
'give us water, give us back our eyes
    our beds this concrete floor
and it's all we have left to live for
    a day we'll never face we're only
    second handed sick and lonely
    fighting back the tears
and every urge to van gogh both our ears'"

    Cooking Wine
"Sorry I'm late, I was out spoiling my liver
    I couldn't wait
The sun was up for far too long today
    And I can't see straight
But the two of you look awfully pretty"

    I'm Dying Tomorrow
"Did I remember to sleep in
    Take lots of pills
    Commit irreversible sins
Did I at least try to kiss the prettiest girl
    At the right time"

    Blue In the Face
"and all that followed fell like mercury to hell
somehow we lost our heads for the last time
now i can't dream since i quit sleeping
and i haven't slept since i met you
and you can't breathe without coughing at daytime
neither can i so what do you say?
    your coffin or mine?"

Lucky Boys Confusion- Dumb Pop Song
"I know this will be a BIG CHALLENGE, but I'm going to steal your girlfriend"

The Fray- Over My Head(Cable Car)
"everyone knows I'm in over my head
    over my head
with eight seconds left in over time
she's on your mind, she's on your mind"

    Shakira- Underneath Your Clothes
"I love you more than all that's on the planet
    Movin' talkin' walkin' breathing
    You know it's true
    Oh baby it's so funny
    You almost don't believe it
As every voice is hanging from the silence
Lamps are hanging from the celing
Like a lady tied to her manners
I'm tied up to this feeling"

    Butthole Surfers- Pepper
"I can taste you on my lips
and smell you in my clothes"

    hmm

Dave Holland Big Band: Modern big band, dave has a sound that's all him, sometimes his melodies lack passion tho. um i dunno, check out "last minute man" off their latest album called overtime. it's one of those spy jazz songs, has a nice 3/4 bop

Bill Frisell: this guy, ah man! just listen to him play guitar, he's so distinct on an instrument that's become so common in sound. Nobody sounds like frisell, plus dude can play ANYTHING, he's got americana albums, nashville style albums even a rocker will lose it to. um plus he always employs GREAT side musicians, like kenny woollesen or joey baron on drums.

    SPEAKING OF JOEY BARON.
John Zorn's Naked City is essiential listening, ah man, it's so fucked up in just the right way, i've never heard a cheap blues lick become a furious post bop sax lick back into a crunchy latin vibe like this, it's too much sometimes(get "the latin quarter," do it because you love life).

    Mr Bungle - California
just listen to it, it's eccentric weird, and patton is just awesome AWEOSME he whistles better than you think, and i don't mean you didn't know he didn't whistle well, i mean his whistling is better than all your brain processes combined!!

    parliament - mothership connection
cuz. song 5, "handcuffs" is so nice, bootsy is another one of those musicians who played his own sound, and has been ripped since.

Medeski martin and wood - combustication
yeh if mmw is cool, definitely a band that has alot of songs that sound a like, but um, check out, "Latin Shuffle" i dunno, it's fucked up, it almost hurts to listen to, nice little solo curteousy billy martin in there too

    don caballero - American Don
haha goddamn, the guy who runs this band is just a machine, a total jerk drummr yeh

    uh Steely Dan
Jazz rock come on, every song has that perfect solo in it, i especially reccomend Aja.

    The Knife - Deep Cuts
Incest dance music, i dunno, just hear "heartbeats," it's like going to the zoo, it gives you a fresh positive outlook, but still sort of tortures you because you see 100s of animals in captivity, dig?

    the beatles - white album
the rest are good, but the white album is so neat, such short songs making such a big statement?

    Air - Moon Safari
just good songs, always have nice chords, sometimes their bass parts sort of bum me out

Mariah Carey: god she can belt it out. sometimes the hip hop production(too much repitition for a pop song you know?) cause bum me out, but her multitracked vocals are always refreshing

ah, Jay-Z unplugged is necessary. just listen to it, it's all this music made on machines played so fucking tight by live musicians. ?uestlove has that hip hop beat on drums that is more than solid

Frank zappa - ah just listen to him, he's cool

pfft i could type for years. songs!~
