I think that Robespierre's revolutionary ideology shares numerous similarities with the writings of Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson expected the US Revolution to spark a rapid spread of democracy and thought that the US should not only be a beacon of democracy, but also propagator of democratic revolutions around the world. It is for this reason, that Jefferson highly supported the French Revolutions at the start. It was not until the Reign of Terror that Jefferson backed away from his support. This is not to say that this somehow means that Jefferson and Robespierre are of different types, because even within those of the same type cannot be expected to behave the same in all circumstances. Jefferson and Robespierre, as well as their respective revolutions, also contained their different set of circumstances with which they had to contend. But for both, they are recognized as being akin to an ideological emodiments of their revolutions.
