INTj jobs/careers/occupations: what do LIIs do for a living?

Engineering:

Engineering is the application of pure science to practical problems. More specifically, engineering is a professional activity that uses imagination, judgement, and intelligence in the application of science, technology, mathematics, and practical experience to design, produce, and operate useful objects or processes that meet the needs and desires of humanity. It is sometimes considered to be synonymous with technology. Professional practitioners of engineering are called engineers.

There are men in Guam whose full-time job is to travel the country and deflower young virgins. The reason for this is that in Guam, virgins are forbidden to marry.

That, my friend, is the perfect career.

I'm studying engineering but haven't had any work experience. I'm not sure how it'll go.

This summer I discovered that I really enjoy helping non-native speakers of english with words and phrases. I don't know about doing it for a job though... at least it tells me raising children would be a lot of fun (most of the time?)

there is no ideal job. Any job that allows independent and orginal thinking should do the trick.

Actually, that is the ideal job

For me, the ideal job would be something computer-related where I can work from home (I hate commuting, and I don't particularly like going outside).

The ideal job for an INTj is the one he creates for himself. It's probably gonna be something that isn't normally heard of or accepted as viable e.g. infopreneur or network marketer

I don't find it a problem that I don't take myself seriously or life for that matter. Life's too short to sweat the small stuff or the big stuff even. I just want to get through life and find out what's at the other end. Like I said in another post: we were born to to die. There must be something really interesting beyond this life. But I don't want to find out bad enough to jump off a cliff or anything. I sure rub you the wrong way don't I, Pedro?

Every time my INTp cousin and I would try something new, he would say this. Totally annoying. :D

engineering, huh? well then, it must be REAL engineering and not the lame pseudo-engineering of project management masquerading as engineering where engineering decisions are overruled by SALES people. and then when things go wrong because of the un-scientific decisions flouting engineering practices, the engineers get blamed and everyone else gets amnesia on when they overruled the engineers.

(quite obviously, that's my job). so.... i'm kind of not into the engineering-is-the-ideal-INTJ-job thing, because in most companies the INTJ engineer would have to put up with being under the thumb of more powerful departments. and being made to do stupid things, and made to do things based on someone's inept grasp of statistics, or sheer inability to think logically..... essentially made to do unnecessary and inefficient work. it is, for an INTJ, a nightmare.

i'm thinking something with more intellectual freedom - science, maybe. but again, not for some company that's going to usurp the science and twist it to give misleading impressions of things.

My INTP father was a medical scientist / pathologist.

Engineering is not the thing. It's a bit too practical for my taste. :wink: Might as well be a plumber or an electrician. People tell you what they want and you do the work. Doesn't seem to involve much freedom in creativity. I would only agree with engineering as an ideal job if it was genetic engineering. ;)

Science is definitely the thing. I have heard that the only way to do scientific studies in USA is to get some corporation to hire you. In Estonia research usually isn't funded by companies. Or at least quite a lot of it is funded by universities (which are funded by the government). It is possible to do science for the knowledge. You usually don't have a company to tell you what the result must be.


I don't think that the "ideal" job in Guam is intended for women. I'm not upset about that, thought. Not like I'm going to cry out, "Sexual discrimination!!!" :P Otherwise :lol: LOL @ the reasons why it isn't the ideal job.

INFPs could make good engineers. I think people underestimate the ability of an INFP to apply their knowledge.

I've done quite a bit of experimenting the last year or so, and I'm just wondering what you all think.

Something like teaching or reserach? Science orientated? I'm really trying to figure it out.

If I have my confidences and I know the system of an area, I can be socially confident, but social stuff, obviously, isn't my cup of tea. I'm trying to figure out where someone with my talents/weaknesses would best fit into the world.

So basically, if you knew someone was an INTj (please don't waste your time with arguing about what my type is)... basically, if you saw someone and you knew they were an INTj, what would recommend they do for a living, or at college, or how should they seek to fit into society and "play their part" so to say.

I know that might be..... strange terminilogy to use, but... bear with me on this one.

Do you ever get that "born into exile" feeling? Always the outsider thinking outside the box to the point that you can't live inside the box. Watching eveyone else living out a live movie. Sometimes I have social opportunities from curious onlookers right in front of me and still manage to think-too-much and not seize the moment for whatever it might lead to which my Ti-Ne has already guessed at and thus self-paralysed my ability to be one with immediate Se reality.

I can certainly relate to the Enneagram Type 5: Observer.

HA! that's interesting. My class-mates, and not only the current ones, because I've been changing the group, they would tell me just like that, all of a sudden, during conversation, "you know, you'd make a great teacher" :shock: and I'm like what the ... where did that come from? umm, I think it's because of my distant, impersonal way of explaining things, even tough I don't realize it in that moment that I do have this style of formal speaking and attitude.

So yeah, in my opinion, the Ti doesn't find much use in the world today other than teaching, research, stuff like that, somewhere not in the limelight, a more hidden place, a library, a university, an institute (not mental institute, god forbid!)

That is of course, assuming that you want to use what you have, the function that defines you.

The University, as an institution, is INTj incarnate.

Make a ritual of walking out naked in front of your house every morning with this grinning smile showing teeth and shout really loud "DAMN, I AM SEXY!" everywhere you go... not only will you become that much more assertive, you'll get a heck of alot of attention.

And as far as walking around outside of your house naked in public, do it really early in the morning when it is dark and not too many people will see you, the last thing you need is negitive attention when you are trying to learn to be more assertive. [ok, maybe that sounds idiotic and stupid, but whatever].

....... quite a few people have told me that I have the 'teacher' aura.

Teaching/science.... well....
There really isn't much I have an interest in. So if I could find a field or something I really thought was important, etc, then I certainly wouldn't mind research or teaching, etc, in that field.

Regular jobs with regular people..... I wouldn't stay engaged very long. (aside: People sometimes say I'M predictable, because I use the same sort of phrases from time to time. I wouldn't have to do that, though, if people didn't keep doing the same things over and over again.)

It's so weird when you are the only person who sees a certain sort of pattern, you know what I mean?



It's not that I feel my 'opitons' are limited, but it's more that, as for things I'd like to do, (you know, something where I can optimize my existence by using whatever talents I do have), I really want to put myself in a position where I can be me. I few events happened recently that reminded me of how much of an INTj I am. Not that I forgot, but... seeing other pesonality types so clearly (that ESFp that I mentioned, etc), and... it brought about a refreshed perspective.

Maybe..... I'll schedule another talk with my advisor when I get back from break. ...


To be honest, I feel better in a more structured institute like a university. WE'll see though. Perhaps I'll experiment with a few other things first

Believe it or not, I walk around don't have to say anything for people to know I'm damn sexy. I don't have confidence problems, and I can control my appearence pretty well (though I am definitely getting a shorter haircut over the break.....).

I don't have problems with confidence or assertion.

I just don't know where or how or what to assert myself in; which direction to go. I'm trying to figure out my plan, so to say

I think it makes me look better, like, when I step out of the shower and there's no hair in my face - it's time for that look.

And I think it fits in with this transition into one of the sciences (I'm declaring my major next semester), and other INTj-ness.

Yeah, i agree the university system is pretty much Ti, as a thought pattern and Ne as for observing the reality and then creating theories, but again making use of the Ti.

There are at least 2 ESTps teachers in my college, probably again the Ti thing (it's their creative function)

I have an INTj friend who likes his job a lot, he is an engineer, working in a small place with just a few people he gets along with. He makes various metal parts on various machines, its a very practical job.

Maybe something like this is very suitable for INTj's, as its a hands on job with little interaction with unknown people.

Just a thought. :)

Venture Capitalism is something that an INTj may be really interested in. The analysis and free will of it is very attractive to INTjs. Also, INTjs are very economical.

i dont think its lost. I think all NTs are drawn at least superficially to these types of jobs (risk and structure).

We have a thread for ILE careers. What then would be good careers for an LII?

For me, it's anything scientific/academic. 'Truly' creative jobs such as writer/artist do not appeal to me. The same goes for practical jobs. People jobs - the same again!

University researcher. Electrical/software engineer. Telephone switching engineer. Chemist. Anything which involves Ti facts to be classified into a system. The best jobs of this type for LII's will also require a minimum of contact with other people and a minimum of oversight. Throw in paid health care and guaranteed retirement, and you have LII heaven.

However, if they fail to secure employment of the type described above, their nihilistic nature drives them to become absurdist, drug-abusing street mimes.

Same here. I think that's what largely attracts me to librarianship. There is a system for classifying books and other materials.


It is more than just creating and working with systems though. Its also improving systems or integrating multiple systems to create a mega supersystem.

Another point: computer science of any kind I find really interesting.

Also: this is my pet theory: the logical subtype has more Te. Therefore, LII-Ti goes well in fields that use Ti that have some practical emphasis. E.g., engineering, programming, actuary. Yep. For me stability is also important: it's difficult for me to do a job that constantly shifts the basic parameters of what you do.

I actually had an LII boss(slash programmer) one time. You would think that such a people-oriented job would not attract an LII, but he actually found it an interesting challenge and way to become a more well-rounded person. I guess that it was mostly about developing :Fe:.

LIIs can make excellent problem solvers and predictors or forecasters depending on background and intellect. Although LIIs seem to like predictability and structure, they don't like routine, scrutiny or pressure to produce. They don't do well ad hoc and they cannot turn on the green light when someone wants a green suit. They are better at being the power behind the throne than the one on it. Avoid jobs that require empathy and or attention to minute detail. They do better at a systems level where oversight and strategy is key.....

How is being physicist work for you? I have sen bunch of them doing physics. It is just that some IMEs turn it bit hard. Lot's of mindless calculation etc which is not strict math. Knowing the impact of forces etc.

Huge amount of mathematicians are LIIs.

Ti is really good for clarity. Anyways, at least people say that my plans and writings really makes things very clear (well, I do put in extra effort... Fe-HA). However some of LII writings I have seen were bit out of grasp for most people while you could see that their level of comprehension was astonishing.

I've known many in theoretical physics and math as well as writing, stock market, project management, engineering, etc.; we seem to be good in jobs that require broad analysis or connecting the dots. Though we can be excellent at analysing information and synthesizing new information, acquiring the right information can sometimes be a challenge, and failures to do so cause us to often become obsessive or perfectionists; out of fear of such failure, we tend to say no, hesitate, over think and or stall no matter how intelligent the LII may be.....

Hm... I am studying Translation/Interpretation Studies and if I were to pick any other thing, I think it would still be Semantics/Philology related? I can do just fine with math and science if I want to, and I do like them theoretically but I most likely would still pick something to do with language/meaning/subjectivity related as my main research field.

I pondered if I should've picked computer science at highschool but so far, I seem to be doing well in my studies. It is only first grade yet, though...

Would this seem to fit with your pet theory @jason_m ?

I see ignoring Te. It's like I'm heavily capable of finding information out of something minuscule stuff and then continuing to derail myself. Like some sort of information eating monster. I'm sometimes challenged to stay on topic. It's like I got it and then there this possibility and this and... Easy to see what I like to ignore.

You and EII have similar strengths on how you process stuff albeit it is different in terms of interest. They are also very capable of thinking through language structures where as I'm always derailing myself into new direction.

I can see LIIs studying language from a scientific perspective but as a translator in a booth, not so much. I have yet to meet an LII who would like subjectivity other than as a subject; they'd likely abhor being themselves judged subjectively. I'd have guessed Academia but it's a pretty mixed bag of types really, lots of betas in it seems

We have a guy at our university who makes schedules and seminar organizations, either he's ILI or LII but he does his job really well. Always sits in his office for long long long periods of time all concentrated on his work.

Saved my ass two times because I messed up during subject election period.

I think having as many chances to be in "flow" (Description) is good for a LII.
I think having pleasant people to talk to is also good, but where social interaction isn't important for the work. Just an office environment where people are pleasant. (Which most types probably want?)

Yep. It should maybe be an occasional bonus of :Fe:? Like an office party. Sure, we're social creatures by default depending on others, even the SO-blind spots :lol: ;) It just varies in what kind of pleasantness is wanted, that boils down to the ethical IE values and dimensionalities.

Any job where I can stare off into space, sit and think, read books in philosophy, science, natural history, technology, politics, etc, in my spare time, would be a dream job. The worse jobs are those that keep you busy with menial tasks that you have no time to observe and think. While I could be a full time student or a research scientist, the thought of not going at my own pace causes anxiety, like in having to publish or perish.

There's alot of different types of librarians in many different settings (public, academic, school, corporate, law libraries, etc.)

I happen to work in a public library and the work I do is very service oriented. Yes, I work with people who can be rude, which is the worst part of the job. Most of the people are nice though and thank me for my services.

On a daily basis my work alternates between direct service to the public at the information desk and behind the scenes type work processing materials, researching, doing other library related projects.

Overall, the behind the scenes work suits me better but I don't mind the serving the public part of it as long as I don't have to deal with difficult people!

I always feel like that when my batteries need recharging, usually after continuous interaction with people - especially when things don't go well. I regularly have to hide from my dual for no particular reason. However, self-imposed isolation is like eating your favorite food; one can overdose. LIIs too easily slip into routine; routine is safe and a place of continual recharge but it's rarely a place of contentment......

I resonate a lot.

The problem with being a monk is that you can't get any Fe. I think there's nothing wrong with a solid office job if the office culture has good passive Fe lying around when you need it. And because you're working with the same people everyday, you don't need to put on a super friendly extroverted face.

The primary reason I don't take the idea completely seriously. I don't think I could give up female attention.

We don't take direction well, tend to be smarter than the average supervisor and do not play materialistic nor interpersonal politics. Not all find ways to reach their academic potential to secure profitable credentials. Networking is a weakness especially just not knowing enough people. And having the ingenuity of our efficient work underestimated and undervalued is a pitfall. Can't use Se successfully to manipulate others into giving high raises etc.

What can we do to professionally advance our careers and keep steady work???

I got INTP on most tests for the last 25 years most the time. My ISFP phase was just a desperate midlife cry for much needed Si and Fe. I'm married to an ESE now who gives it to me and helped me return to my normal self.

Are there any LII entrepreneurs / business owners / freelancers on this forum? Or does anybody know such a LII?

Se polr makes it difficult, but I think that is possible. I don't want to learn about celebrities though, the story of the everyday common person is much more interesting. I would like to learn about an entrepreneur LII's journey if such a person exists on this forum or if anybody knows a LII like that.

Take a look at the advice you were given in the thread you made for career advice for an SEI through the fresh eyes of your new LII typing? You posted your own interests and skills there.

I have had many professional jobs including automotive product design (much varied experience), process engineering, web UI design & programming, and marketing analytics research and project development. My original college goals were to prepare for a career in scientific research. I am still only one year away from a degree in physics with an excellent GPA. Can't afford to finish.

I was only sure my Love was my dual. So the ILE was just a conclusion made before we met in person finally. Then we spent two weeks solid together and with many other people and I was able to rebalance myself by having something of a social life, which is pretty unusual for me to have.

There are things you have to care about when you're self-employed. Things you usally don't care about.
In Germany you have to deal with a lot of bureaucracy, for example. You have to do accounting if you're self-employed or you have to pay someone else to do it for you... and probably we've got the most complex tax system in the whole world. :8*

Some jobs are difficult for LII because we don't value :Se: and :Te:, for me it's physical demanding work and repeated tasks. I can do it only for a limited period of time a day.

Yes, I don't like dealing with excessive mundane repetition NOR having to be too assertive in daily life. In the USA business people who are more autonomous are VERY aggressive and loud people, generally speaking. Not all though, but it helps them a lot in this cultural climate when negotiating and demonstrating "competence" by sheer force of volition rather than introspective ingenuity and understanding.

Why entrepreneurs in particular? I don't consider myself one. I live comfortably. I bought an apartment recently. I invest in the stock market. But I'm not a millionaire yet in terms of net worth.

Take advantages of opportunities to display talent by taking the opportunity to a higher level and then slowly break people in to your way of doing things until it's the way people do things. Keeping steady work has been pretty easy in the long term.

Getting a better job though... Getting great opportunities... Making what you should be.. fuck if I know

Literally and figuratively great job!

Every job is restrictive but I think entrepreneurs can manipulate/set the principles and/or conditions of their work and/or their own vision more freely than people who work for a corporate or someone else.
