My brother is completely into this kind of comptemporary jazz, he know many many many stuff... He show me often good track, but I don't remember the name now, I need to ask him.
Im not a really big fan of that style, aside EST wich I find really good (Ive "Leucocyte" album on vinyl, excellent stuff) and other track here and there, I find overraly this lack something... Idk... Perhaps intensity or "life", dunno...
There is Pat Metheny too... Ive the 2*12" "Secret story" (I buyed it for "above the treetops" track, epic tekno mix intro !), but aside "above the treetops", the album is quite elevator music style... Interrestingly that's a complete different story in live, it's quite excellent.
I hate jazz

One of the best dynamic duos in jazz. Shame Shawn died and all that.
I like Squarepusher.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXpzK1ItQGw
Not jazz, though.
Mainstream.

I thought jazz music was invented for the torture of imbeciles.
Please stop trolling this thread, Absurd. Thanks.
Squarepusher is plenty kinds of jazz, otherwise you'll have to eliminate Miles's entire electric period of the late 60s/early 70s and the jazz of numerous other innovators while you hug up to this finger-snapping sissy shit you favor, which is designed for uptight nerds who signal their free and breezy nature by wearing suits with their ties loosened. Squarepusher is a guy, probably LSI, who has blown multiple forms of music to pieces and not only reassembled them in his image but also embroidered and expanded upon them in a characteristic style that few could match in its complexity, with a level of ability as a bass guitarist as well as a producer that makes it frequently challenging to tell whether he's using real or synthesized instruments. Squarepusher's approach to jazz redefines and modernizes the idiom, which would shock your pussy-assed sensibilities less if you weren't so addicted to felching up audio laxatives like Kenny G.
Lol from my experience around jazzers I've learned one thing -- Kenny G is not jazz, he is the devil. Also miles davis is the shit. His third phase was definitely pretty out there but I tend to like a lot of his stuff from when he played with Wayne Shorter.
My friend that plays sax was really into Kenny G, and by that I mean the one that actually plays jazz, Kenny Garrett.

Here are some trumpet players.

Read his autobiography if you haven't. And if there is more than one autobio then read those too. The dude cracks me up, and that's probably my primary criteria for personal music heroes.

^ Truthfully a better social experiment in gullibility than anything else.
Here's another tune by Kenny Garrett that I like. Has a dark/spiritual vibe.

That is LSI Ni-Ip as well.
Very cool song.

This song calms and puts me to sleep like nothing else.

Yea Freddie Hubbard was an amazing ballad player, I'd love to get my hands on a flugel at some point.
Other ballads I enjoy that he regularly plays are body and soul and here's that rainy day.

Favorite part is the top of the second bridge.
I've learned that song a while back, but I don't have the patience to ballads non stop. I've been into this song now:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RHzCQIvMyo
It's been kicking my ass I've been trying to play along to the speed he plays on the light as a feather album. I really like the sound of the rhodes as well.
Django
yea lol chick looks pretty dorky there haha:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzpfZaZfsZg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vonTvRfDqmk
we should get beer or something and talk about jazz & dorkiness IN DEPTH
If I'm ever on the east coast, I'm not a music student so I'm still training in depth for a few months pretty intensively without really much else going on besides a few gigs with a salsa band and my day job, I have a good friend in rl that plays the sax/flute so we may travel through the east coast at some time, he's a bit further ahead than me because he majored in music in college and I quit for a while.
Yea lmao I don't know about that piano player but I like that song a lot when chick plays it on the album "My Spanish Fantasy".
Lol here's another http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtRbM-2teb4
You're on the east coast right?
So I realize this isn't "contemporary" jazz (pardon me!), but I enjoyed this thread and wanted to jump in. This is the type of jazz that I aspire to learn.
I've been working on this one lately. I'm a big fan of Gershwin and always loved this piece. @Park - just as Freddie Hubbard's Naturally song does for you, this song puts me at ease.

I really want to learn this song, but I'm going to let it sit for a while, I'm currently working on bop and reading a lot of the parker book. I've been trying to find the clifford brown version... but its not on youtube!!!!
That's a classic. Also:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7MJt8zipz8
You won't find it on anything... Benny Golson wrote it in memory of Clifford Brown.
Red Clay
Here's That Rainy Day
SkyDive
Straight Life
Hub-Tones
Little Sunflower
Body and Soul
Up Jumped Spring
Etc...
Yea I know I was attempting to be clever and trying to be subtle about it. He died in a car accident at the age of 25, was a really good trumpet player. That's why I think its an essential standard for a trumpet player to carry on the legacy etc...Quote:

Probably a little rarer...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbEIgnNiVpU
And of course I'd choose the tune Benson guest stars on...
Great early GB tune.

I want this song/album to be played at my funeral.

You already know I like her (since you suggested her to me), but I am officially in love with her now. My current favorite:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdBzL1zddXw
I am clueless when it comes to jazz, but this is so fun to listen to, especially the instrumental part (even though I love her voice to death, too). And the end is just so cute.
Here's a track I quite like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWKlX5nRO50
Excellent selection, Kim. I like the tune and the solos.
And no, jazz isn't for everyone. I'm glad you find it fun to listen to.
Thanks for the contribution, Narc.
Here's another great and classy mainstream jazz singer I just thought of. One of my favorite tunes by her. Timeless beauty.

Not available in my country...:(
But this one makes me think of my favorite city and its jazz (and heat) for some reason :

I am not a huge fan of Diana Krall (her voice does not do much for me), but I love this one. Especially 0:22-1:00 and 3:54-4:30. And the video is so well put together.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIgXnhzjelw&list=PL8F9384524C5619B9
I'm not a fan of that old jivy style you could barely call jazz, but I like Diana Krall.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJx2oVCKGLs
She's Canadian, btw.
I didn't know that. I heard of Diana Panton (another Canadian) on CBC the other day. I find this incredibly charming (in a similar way as Viktoria Tolstoy):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdCTnLqEdRQ
Or this one. She has such a sweet voice:

Better yet:

This made my day today. Personally, I can appreciate jazz so much more when I can watch the musicians perform (more so than with other genres that I can just play in the background).

Jose James is a dick.
Why do you think that is?
That's actually Samba de Verão, a Brazilian bossa nova.

I am not sure. I have some ideas. I will get back to you on that.Quote:

This is the kind of stuff that might just get me through a Canadian winter. :love:Quote:

Seriously sexy. I like this one a lot:Quote:

Her voice and the ones I mention above just make me swoon. Maybe that is why I do not much care for Diana Krall - her voice just does not have this warm and fuzzy and sweet and summery effect on me. I can get butterflies and goosebumps listening to Viktoria Tolstoy or Diana Panton (or Gabriela Anders, for that matter, who is playing while I am typing this).
And finally for today, I love this version of Embraceable You.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bj-sH-UoF2s
Well Krall is LSE 6 sp/sx, and Anders is IEI 4 sx/sp. Different musical styles, too.
Just found out that George Duke (the guy who produced Gabriela Anders' albums) has passed away... oh man... RIP George, and thank you for everything.
Aside from all the great music, I used to really enjoy his podcasts, too.Quote:

That being said, I cannot tell you why this is one of my favorites, but it is just really really nice:

My favorite drummer as of late, in a mainstream setting with legendary Hank Jones.

(and unlike hyperbolical Kim over here, I tend to use words like "favorite" for their intended meaning)
Hey I recently picked up a keyboard! A yahama p70, its a little old, but relatively good condition for a starting keyboard. I've been practicing comping on different tunes, its helped me really hear the progressions and understanding 7/3 leading and stuff, as well as modern progressions and theory. I've been working out of the real book; I've focused on body and soul and up jumped spring. I'm a big fan of hubbard as we've already mentioned. I've also worked on "here's that rainy day".
Thanks for the referral in your previous post. I need to post something of me playing, but right now I'm kind of sucking, I got my range so high that my low end started to get thin and plasticy and superficial sounding, so I've had to rework my embouchure to build out more tone quality in the lower register. I also changed my embouchure a few months ago to the "no pressure" technique, and now instead of jamming the mouthpiece into my face I have to push out and grip the mouthpiece with my lips. It requires a lot of support from the core. I'm still playing in the salsa band but its been hard to practice, I had a neighbor slash my tires for practicing lead trumpet in the apartment. It was within the legal times but I guess he didn't like hearing me lip up 8va and then do a maj3 trill. I moved apartments though, so I'm no longer in a hostile situation =p.
Cool. Have fun with the P70. I played it at my high school graduation; here's a pic. It's an okay keyboard. Better than most of it's competitors (at the time).
Interestingly enough, I prefer the sound and touch of older yamahas to the new ones.
Maybe you could have gotten the P90 or P120 for a few more bucks. Anyways, I'm thinking of salting away some bread for this baby.
