deal with it
Offer them an incentive for a possible return and look into viable replacements.
1- try to see if there´s a way of changing the person´s mind, if there´s not
2- get fucking mad and let the rage out breaking something
3- if the person was too valuable, cry
4- try to see possible replacements and minimize losses once the rage/sadness stage is past (usually it´s quick)
Deal with it.
Your question is rather ... broad. There are a number of different factors determining whether or not I'd say or try to get employment or put my efforts someplace else. It depends on the people, what I see of the future, how things are benefiting me...
That "a friend" is leaving doesn't mean that much.
If you want a better answer, give a better question.
If they have a good reason, compensate. If they don't have a good reason, over-compensate and write them off as a fair-weather backstabber.
