I was wrong about Simon Sebag Montefiore's Jerusalem book: he generally merely reflects the Jewish account of their origins in the relevant section of the book. It was actually Simon Price's The Birth of Classical Europe I was thinking of, particular this chapter that is online: http://erenow.com/ancient/the-birth-...gustine/3.html The Israelites begin to be specifically mentioned in the paragraph beginning with "With the collapse of the old balance of power between Egypt, the Hittites and Assyria, the Levant in the tenth and ninth centuries was left largely to its own devices.", but reading the whole chapter gives you the context of the period.
