It's the whole point of Jesus, according to Paul -- not according to Jesus. If you consider Jesus to be God, or even if you consider him merely a messenger of God, you might consider examining his message more closely, rather than relying on Paul, whom the author of 2nd Peter described as "difficult to understand," and liable to be interpreted in a destructive fashion.

Another instance: "If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” Faith-alone isn't a doctrine preached by Jesus. Anyway, I won't continue to bother you unless you'd like to keep this conversation going.

A more accurate translation of the quote in your signature would be "obey" for "believe." The verb translated as "believe," "pisteuo," could also mean "obey," and that this is the correct meaning is indicated by its later contrast with the verb "apeitheo," which means "to not obey," and has no sense of "to not believe." Unfortunately that verse has become so well known in its current rendition that most translations don't change it, even though their translators ought to know better.

"Believe" denotes that you have to just "accept Jesus into your heart" or something in order to receive eternal life. But Jesus is quite clear that "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word..." For Jesus, it's not a matter of simply "believing," but actually obeying his instruction.
