Are YOU A Good Listener? (Poll)

So, are you? Do people struggle to get a word in edgewise? Or are you more receptive in conversation?

Maybe the poll will show a typological pattern. If you're not sure of your type, best guess is okay with me.

And if you're willing, please expand or clarify your answer below in the thread.

For example, myself, I'm not always a good listener--I talk too much. But when I do bother to listen, I usually listen carefully and with empathy. By contrast, my best friend is an amazingly good listener, and I've always wondered how she does it. She does write nearly obsessively, though, so maybe she gets all her ideas and psychic tension out on paper / screen. That doesn't work for me.

ETA: I know this is a very crude poll. It would be more fun to allow people to answer various questions about listening, to include things like gender and they are from, and to allow ranged responses (1 to 5 or 10) rather than binary. But this is just for fun and out of curiosity.

ive been told i am many times..and sometimes its true. other times it just seems that way because i'm better at asking questions and prompting other people to talk than i am at coming up with things to say, but it doesn't mean i'm actively listening.

In a survey, a strong majority of French males reported that they are better lovers than the average French male. Another study showed that people in relationships take responsibility of the relationship more than 50% on average. I take the trash out 70% of the time and my roommate said he takes the thrash 80% percent of the time. I bet most of us are also really good listeners, too.

I get it, but this is for fun. If the majority of people think they're good listeners, that will interest me on the basis that I suspect the majority are not such good listeners. Ergo the need for people to devote entire books to the art and skill of listening.

Some people are good listeners, though. Or at least they're quiet and give the impression that you're being heard.

Depends. I'm receptive to conversation and allow people to talk uninterrupted most of the time, so in that sense, I'm a good listener. And when I'm listening actively, I'm a great listener. I don't always pay full attention though.

somewhere in the middle. i don't talk much and i usually have the time, but it takes effort for me to get concerned about other people's issues.
