I'm reading As a Man Thinketh. There's a HUGE focus on underlying cause and effect relationships.

    Three things:

1.) OMG THIS IS THE MOST BRILLIANT THING I'VE EVER READ
2.) It's also one of the most Gamma things I've ever read. (LIE > SEE > ESI > ILI)
2.) If this guy isn't LIE, I quit Socionics.

As a Man Thinketh is a pretty short book and it's worth checking out. I'd recommend it to anyone.

And just now I found the most un-Gamma thing I've ever read.

    Not exalting the gifted prevents
    quarreling.
    Not collecting treasures prevents
    stealing.
    Not seeing desirable things prevents
    confusion of the heart.

The wise therefore rule by emptying
    hearts and stuffing bellies, by
    weakening ambitions and
    strengthening bones.

If men lack knowledge and desire, then
clever people will not try to interfere.

If nothing is done, then all will be well.
It's from the Tao Te Ching.

We've had this discussion before and we ended it agreeing that we had completely different ideas as to what was meant by a self-help book.

I personally have never read one. I cannot see what kind of benefit would I reap. My time is better spent doing much more productive or enjoyable things. Joy saying that she doesn't like self-help books, after her sponsoring of Kyosaki and the like, is simply laughable.

    Joy is in self-help denial

Anything that helps you "understand the universe" so that functioning in the world is easier, is a self-help/motivational book.
But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...

Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Under cerulean skies...

So even the book "electrical repair 101" I read when I had to repair my lamp was a self-hep book?

It all comes down to how you define "self-help". Yes, many of my favorite books can be found in the section of Barnes and Noble labeled "self-help". If anyone's really interested in hearing my thoughts on this matter, they can be found in the topic about Wayne Dyer. It's really not worth getting into again though.

So Logos, to answer your question: No, I do not believe that all Gammas (or only Gammas) are going to be drawn to the section of Barnes and Noble labeled "self-help".

No, I do not believe that continuously seeking to learn and grow as an individual (which is really what this is about) is exclusive to Gamma, either. (And again, certainly not all Gammas are interested in personal growth.)

However, the manner in which people of different temperaments and quadra values grow as individuals does differ. Of the books that can be found in the section of Barnes and Noble labeled "self-help" there are different choices that would be suitable to each of the different sets of quadra values and temperaments. Of course, this does not mean that every individual of a certain type/quadra would be interested in the book, or that only individuals of that type/quadra would be interested in it. Similarly, it would be ridiculous to say that all IEI's would like a particular television show or that all LSE's would be well suited to a particular career.

If you're interested in understanding how As a Man Thinketh is extremely Gamma, read it in the library that I posted a link to or send me a PM for the link to listen to the audio book online. It's a short book.

And to be clear, I don't think that his work is the end all answer, even for LIE's. If you combine his work with Eckhart Tolle's you're much closer, but of course it's simply not possible to find an end all answer.

Self-help stuff is pretty much universally Fe, IMO.

    You've read his books?

I don't agree with everything he says and I wouldn't present the concepts from the same perspective he does (I think he's leaving some important stuff out), but I do find value in his books.

The fussy, peevish, irritable man has no influence. He repels, and not attracts. He wonders why his “easy going” neighbour succeeds, and is sought after, while he, who is always hurrying, worrying and troubling the miscalls it striving, falls and is avoided. His neighbour, being a calmer man, not more easy going but more deliberate, gets through more work, does it more skillfully, and is more self possessed and manly.

Recreation is one of the necessities of life. Every man and women should have some definitive work as the main object of life, and to which a considerable amount of time should be devoted, and he should only turn from it at given and limited periods for recreation and rest. The object of recreation is greater buoyancy of both body and mind, with an increase of power in one’s serious work. It is, therefore, a means, not an end; and this should ever be born in mind, for, to many, some forms of recreation innocent and good in themselves – become so fascinating that they are in danger of making them the end of life, and of thus abandoning duty for pleasure. To make of life a ceaseless round of games and pleasures, with no other object in life, is to turn living upside down, as it were, and it produces monotony and enervation. People who do it are the most unhappy of mortals, and suffer from languor, ennui, and peevishness. As sauce is an aid to digestion, and can only lead to misery when made the work of life. When a man has done his day’s duty he can turn to his recreation with a free mind and a light heart, and both his work and his pleasure will be to him a source of happiness.
I'd say EJ is pretty much a given? He writes about energy at another point in the same book, and the things he says there also suggest an EJ temperament.
