    Question Fe and Fi

I would kind of like to know the biggest differences between these two IM's. Mostly, due to the fact that I was between EIE and ESI for myself. These types are pretty different, so obviously I don't quite understand them?

    Reese Witherspoon is ESI.

    Tori Spelling is EIE.

    Notice the similarities & differences.

Fe is sentimental pure emotion like a Hallmark greeting card. Gamma Fi is all showy self when expressed and big on influencing... leveraging relations.

They will show their own emotions a lot in pretty dramatic ways. How can I describe it? Think of Betas as personally emotional and Gammas as "professionally" emotional, if that makes any sense.

Holy shit not this topic again, for the 32792374th time!

If you value Fe you're a bitch, if you value Fi you're a cunt. That's the best way to think of it.

Fi-types prefer to rationalize in isolation separate from others; they like to know about what others think and do, but they tend to take the information away (or seemingly go blank) to rationalize. Now, they can decide immediately and sometimes rashly but the people around them usually have little influence on their decisions other than providing information. It's unlikely that someone will know the true opinions of Fi-types until they've decided for themselves.

Fe-types like to rationalize in group as if they're utilizing everyone's rationalization processes; they prefer to have decisions made immediately and they don't seem to care who comes up with the idea. However, they're the ones who'll push for closure because they hate to leave anything hanging; they wear their opinions on their sleeves and can be perceived as very persistent communicators - sometimes to the point of annoyance or conflict.

Note that I follow a different model than Socionics.

The biggest difference between Fe and Fi is in the stability of one's emotions. Introverted feeling is stable and one can stay in one mood for a very long time. Fi users depend on their feelings so much that when some feeling rings as "true" or "good" to them, they cling to it and refuse to let it go. Also since their feelings are subjective and internal, they're not so easily influenced by the outside stimuly, so they can stay in one mood or emotion for much longer than Fe users.

Fe is more unstable and moody, it has bigger highs and lows and depends on the environment more. It's more expressive in a sense that an Fe person can't really hide how they feel in certain situations. A lot of people wrongly think that Fe users don't have personal emotions or values. That is not true, they do and they have them a lot, they also express them more than Fi types do. There's a big difference between beta Fe and alpha Fe though. Betas are all about being honest about how you really feel about something and they demand that you express it clearly and visibly for everyone, even if it might piss someone off. Alpha Fe is more conflict avoidant and harmony seeking and Fi is more passive aggressive in showing the disagreement, they dislike to say right away how they feel, while beta Fe is pretty much, "in your face".

@Freya From my experience, Fe-types aren't less stable emotionally or more moody than Fi-types, and Betas demand no more honesty than other types, and Alpha Fe isn't more conflict avoidant or harmony seeking than say Beta Fe. Ij-types don't let aggressiveness show before decisions are made but when decided, all hell can break loose whereas Ejs don't seem to want to mask anything except the hidden agendas or lies - they prefer to let it all hang out from the start.

Compare true ESI Reese Witherspoon to true ESE Michael Palin or Tim Curry.

Fe with Si gives one the ability to sustain feelings for a very long time. Those types are not moody at all.

You can read my VESSTHEastralsilky's Functional Definitions thread and my creative Fe thread for more info so I' m not repeating my posts so much.

    Feelings, Nothing More Than Feelings

Approximately 12-15 percent of the general population are introverted feelers (IF), a temperament type that is subjective and, according to Jung, “continually seeking an image which has no existence in reality, but which it has seen in a kind of vision. It glides unheedingly over all objects that do not fit in with its aim. It strives after inner intensity, for which the objects serve at most as a stimulus” (Psychological Types, para. 638).

The depth of this feeling can only be guessed–it can never be clearly grasped. It makes people silent and difficult of access; it shrinks back like a violet from the brute nature of the object in order to fill the depths of the subject. It comes out with negative judgments or assumes an air of profound indifference as a means of defence. The primordial images are, of course, just as much ideas as feelings. Fundamental ideas, ideas like God, freedom, and immortality, are just as much feeling values as they are significant ideas. Everything, therefore, that we have said about introverted thinking is equally true of introverted feeling, only here everything is felt while there it was thought. But the very fact that thoughts can generally be expressed more intelligibly than feelings demands a more than ordinary descriptive or artistic ability before the real wealth of this feeling can be even approximately presented or communicated to the world. If subjective thinking can be understood only with difficulty because of its unrelatedness, this is true in even higher degree of subjective feeling. In order to communicate with others, it has to find an external form not only acceptable to itself, but capable of arousing a parallel feeling in them.

Thanks to the relatively great inner (as well as outer) uniformity of human beings, it is actually possible to do this, though the form acceptable to feeling is extraordinarily difficult to find so long as it is still mainly oriented to the fathomless store of primordial images. If, however, feeling is falsified by an egocentric attitude, it at once becomes unsympathetic, because it is then concerned mainly with the ego. It inevitably creates the impression of sentimental self-love, of trying to make itself interesting, and even of morbid self-admiration.

Just as the subjectivized consciousness of the introverted thinker, striving after abstraction to the nth degree, only succeeds in intentisfying a thought process that is in itself empty, the intensification of egocentric feeling only leads to inane transports of feeling for their own sake. This is the mystical, ecstatic stage which opens the way for the extraverted functions that feeling has repressed. Just as introverted thinking is counterbalanced by a primitive feeling, to which objects attach themselves with magical force, introverted feeling is counterbalanced by a primitive thinking, whose concretism and slavery to facts surpass all bounds. Feeling progressively emancipates itself from the object and creates for itself a freedom of action and conscience that is purely subjective, and may even renounce all traditional values. But so much the more does unconscious thinking fall a victim to the power of objective reality.

Jung continues to discuss the introverted feeling type (IF) by stating that this type is often silent, inaccessible, hard to understand, hides behind a childish or banal mask, and is inclined to melancholy. In fact, as many as 65-85% of people diagnosed with major depressive episode are introverted feelers. Introverted Feelers value peace and harmony above almost anything else; strong emotions are struck down “with murderous coldness” or nearly paralyze the IF. In women, especially, introverted feeling tends to come off as cold because the strong feeling component is introjected rather than sent outward by projection onto others. In pathological introverted feelers, there is a tendency to overpower or coerce others to get one’s way, “in the form of a domineering influence often difficult to define” (para. 642). Introverted feeling women tend to attract extraverted men, for their power touches the unconscious in the man.

    The Extraverted Feeler

In contrast to the introverted feeler (IF) is the extraverted feeler (EF). The extraverted feeler is just as full of feeling and emotion as the introvert, but often only knows what she feels once it is projected onto an object–or another person. The unconscious (or simply immature) EF only finds something “beautiful” or “good” because others say it is so, which reminds me of the wickedly funny movie Untitled, in which trash and neurotic behavior become art simply because artists and gallery owners agree that it is, in fact, art. According to Jung, “a painting, for instance, is called ‘beautiful’ because a painting hung in a drawing room and bearing a well-known signature is generally assumed to be beautiful, or because to call it ‘hideous’ would presumably offend the family of its fortunate possessor, or because the visitor wants to create a pleasant feeling atmosphere, for which purpose everything must be felt as agreeable” (para. 595).

The music, art, cinema, automotive and fashion industries (and even many churches) owe their existence and success to Extraverted Feelers, who as a flock (or mob, whichever applies) lend feeling-based values to whatever places they frequent or labels they buy. As soon as the object “gains ascendancy,” though, and a person assimilates the object, it loses its charm and power; the EF must move on. This accounts for why some people must buy a new car every few years, must obey the dictates of fashion, are never satisfied with their hair, need new furniture or homes, another spouse, a better set of friends, a neighborhood that props up their sense of self. They can’t settle down because they are not whole within themselves. At their worst and most neurotic, they are nearly entirely object oriented, driven by everything outside themselves. Being needed, used, and then discarded by a narcissistic extraverted feeler is the stuff on which country music and Shakespearean tragedies are built. It is often, I think, what contributes in large part to the terrible problem of child neglect and abuse we have in this country. The EF gone wild is a dreadful sight, for she must infect everyone closest to her with her venom. Because the problem is always “out there,” she is difficult if not impossible to woo to health and wholeness. Like Kali, she eats her young.

The average EF, meaning the ones who are unconscious and therefore abound, seem self-absorbed even in the middle of a crowd. They “do” relationships rather than have them, rarely (if ever) asking how you’re doing, and never waiting for the answer, much less listening to it or understanding it. Though they need other people and are, it might be said, born to serve, as long as they are more unconscious than not, they are incapable of understanding others. Since “without understanding, love is an impossible thing,” in spite of their extraversion, neurotic EF’s may be among the most experientially lonely people on the planet, for they cannot truly love others and offer no real personality receptive of love (Thich Nhat Hanh, True Love).

According to Jung, the wonky EF makes others feel suspicious; we can sense their lack of genuineness, their shallowness. They “no longer make that agreeable and refreshing impression which invariably accompanies genuine feeling; instead, one suspects a pose, or that the person is acting” (Jung, para. 596). Though what he says “may satisfy aesthetic expectations, [. . .] it does not speak to the heart” (ibid.). They fail to inspire regardless of the medium of expression.

At their best, extraverted feelers make the world go ’round. They are born to be teachers, healers, pastors, cheerleaders, and good friends. These, like every other temperament type, they cannot be or do faithfully or in the service to God and their deepest selves unless they become self actualized. Becoming whole always means achieving balance, holding opposites in a perfect tension by transcending them altogether. How this is done when one’s very personality urges one to go wide, not deep, and out, not in–well, that’s the challenge, isn’t it?

The introverted feeler has less of a problem attaching to objects and people, but a larger problem of ruthlessly dissecting herself, ruminating on past and current hurts and slights, trying to save the world one dog or child at a time, and failing–and then masterfully digging herself into a melancholy, Eeyorish pit.

    tl;dr

    The Extraverted Feeling Type

Extraverted feeling is based upon accepted or traditional social values and opinions. It involves a conforming, adjusting response to objective circumstances that strives for harmonious relations with the world. Because it depends so much on external stimuli rather than upon true subjective preferences, such feeling can sometimes seem cold, 'unfeeling', artificial or put on for effect.

The extraverted feeling type follows fashion and seeks to harmonize personal feelings with general social values. Thinking is always subordinate to feeling and is ignored or repressed if intellectual conclusions fail to confirm the convictions of the heart. When this type is extreme or neurotic, feeling may become gushing or extravagant and dependent upon momentary enthusiasms that may quickly turn about with changing circumstances. Such a person may therefore seem hysterical, fickle, moody or even to be suffering from multiple personality. Repressed thinking may also erupt in infantile, negative, obsessive ways. This can lead to the attribution of dreaded characteristics to the very objects or people that are most loved and valued.

    The Introverted Feeling Type

Introverted feeling strives for an inner intensity that is unrelated to any external object. It devalues objective reality and is rarely displayed openly. When it does appear on the surface, it generally seems negative or indifferent. The focus of such feeling is upon inner processes and latent, primordial images. At its extreme, it may develop into mystical ecstasy.

The introverted feeling type is brooding and inaccessible, although may also hide behind a childish mask. Such a person aims to be inconspicuous, makes little attempt to impress and generally fails to respond to the feelings of others. The outer, surface appearance is often neutral, cold and dismissive. Inwardly, however, feelings are deep, passionately intense, and may accompany secret religious or poetic tendencies. The effect of all this on other people can be stifling and oppressive. When extreme or neurotic, this type may become domineering and vain. Negative repressed thinking may also be projected so that these persons may imagine they can know what others are thinking. This may develop into paranoia and into secret scheming rivalries.

“My typology is . . . not in any sense to stick labels on people at first sight. It is not a physiognomy and not an anthropological system, but a critical psychology dealing with the organization and delimitation of psychic processes that can be shown to be typical.” —C.G. Jung

Audrey Hepburn was generally agreed on in the past in this forum to be SEI. So is Jessica Lange and Enya imo.
Probably Si subtypes. Jimmy Fallon is an SEI-Fe imo. And like I said, so is Michael Palin from Monty Python's Flying Circus per Socionics.com and imo and Tim Curry imo.

Now cross the general S spectrum you can compare their style of feeling expression with the true Gammas imo like SEE Vanna white from the game show Wheel of Fortune, or ESI as I said Reese Witherspoon from Legally Blonde, and also singer Pink and Juliette Lewis from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. (The ESIs Fi sense of self plus Se sensing field awareness make them very possessions-oriented and territorial about what they want to claim as their domains. Many get hung up on what they call boundary issues.)

These people sets can help you do your own observations and get a feel for the differences.

    @Freya

Nice post, and yeah I agree- I think you pretty much nailed it. I do really like when people are honest about what they truly think and feel about somebody, even if it's not always 'nice' because it's more interesting and real to me. It drives me crazy if the world is too fake nice 24/7 cuz it feels like this illuminati hypnotic illusion whereas a true revolution is simmering underneathe the surface. I don't like when people go overboard with the cruelty tho or like really hannibal-ishly dissecting somebody to the point of no compassion or heart, but idk that's kind of more of a gamma ILI thing to me anyway.

My alpha ILE friend has chastised me for not being nice in the way alphas are tho quite a bit I've noticed.

I think it's important to point out that Fe is a dynamic element. It expresses itself through a dynamic process. Fi can show itself, but when it does so, it does so suddenly and there's often a sharp 90 degree angle from when a person isn't expressing it to when they are.

A good analogy is that Fe is Yang feeling while Fi is yin feeling. Fe is emotion that appears to come from an external source into you, and Fi is a type of emotionality that, while the trigger is external, the actual feeling itself appears to come from the person on the receiving end. Essentially, what's happening is that the person using Fi is causing the internals of the other person to come into resonance with their desired emotional state for them. It's hard to explain. But imagine it like two magnets being attracted to each other. On the surface, there isn't any observable quality, but there is an internal characteristic due to the nature of each magnet individually that causes a pull from within each magnet toward the other.

The introverted elements in general are good at affecting the internals of someone else's information processing while making it appear that the source of the change in information processing is within the person who is on the receiving end of the impetus. In layman's terms, Fe will express an emotion to you, but Fi can change your emotions so you will end up expressing something to them.

Fe types can shift your internal thought processes, and Fi types, instead of imposing feeling on you, can cause you to feel for them. Ni can shift the associative processes of other people so they they arrive at a conclusion/idea/intuition that the Ni type wants, and so on.

When the introverted elements affect a change in someone else's processes, what they are essentially doing is a subtle subconscious process of mirroring.

The extroverted functions affect a change in others by a process of subconscious differentiation and pattern interruption.

Extroversion wants or doesn't want you, and introversion makes you want/not want them. Magnets again: internal shift of polarity creates an external reaction that appears due to the person on the receiving end of the shift.

Yang/electric and yin/magnetic are pretty good ways of understanding the differences.

The universe is basically nothing but repeating patterns translated into different contexts holographically, with the fundamental dichotomy being yin/introversion and yang/extroversion. The two are really one, as in "electromagnetism" but yeah.

If you apply that understanding to all the jungian and Reinin dichotomies you'll understand Socionics better than anyone else.

Even at the higher level, intuition and sensing also reflect the dichotomy of introversion and extroversion. Same with thinking and feeling. A split happens again within each context, creating FeFi and TeTi, etc, and again within that context that makes +/-Fi, etc. You can think of intuition as yin perception and sensing as yang perception. +/-, whatever. Because the splitting continues ad infinitum, you have a very very specific type that's beyond the range of current typology, and you probably won't ever find your perfect dual unless you look for it in yourself. Relatively, though, in the external world, main type is good enough maybe or subtypes. I'd say perception is yin and judging is yang but I'm not sure.

    Like it says.

When Fe is on all the rigor is gone. Words flow easily out of mouth.
When Fi is on it thinks in relations and there is absolutely no action put forwards. There are few good posts by aster. Relational force fields would be the realization of gamma Fi. It is effin crazy but rational. There is no emotion involved.

Michael Jackson is ESI. Also lady gaga and maybe the Weeknd (although he could be SEE)

for EIE its harder, i think Ariana Grande could be one

other ESIs are Till Lindemann, Marilyn Manson

just compare Fe leads (type 2 enneagram) to Fi leads (type 4 enneagram)

enneagram should make it more clear.
