    Default Crossing the Creek

An ENFp has a boat and wants to get his friends across the river. It's a two-man boat and the ENFp must pilot the vessel (God help us).

The ISTp can't be left alone with the ENFj.

The ENFj and the INFp can't stand each other unless the ENFp is there to mediate.

None can swim, the river is deep.

How can you get these four across the river and keep them happy ?

It's simple. ISTp goes with ENFp and they never return. Beta NFs fight forever and everyone is happy.

    Take ENFj. Drop off ENFj.
Go get ISTp. Drop off ISTp.
Bring back ENFj. Drop off ENFj.
Pick up INFp. Drop off INFp.
Go get ENFj. Drop off ENFj.

Yeah the trick is to come up with a reason for why the ENFj should go back, so it doesn't seem rude or odd. Steal his keys and hide them, then get him to mention it on the second run if he wants to go back to find them, meanwhile take the INFp.

Here is one that only an ISTp (Parkster) will get.

You just finished remodeling your family room, but forgot which switch goes with which light bulb.

There are three bulbs and switches, each switch is wired to only one bulb.

You can't see the bulbs from where the switches are, they are around the corner.

Now, since you are an efficent ISTp, can you figure out which switch goes with each bulb, by only peeking around the corner one time?

Is the corner within reach of the switches?
Can you see a reflection off a wall e.g. is there a mirror or are the lamps spots that leave a distinctive hot spot?
    I assume not... so ...
Are the lamps connected to dimmer switches, in which case you could leave one off, one on fifty and one on full?

you could grab a mirror. OR, you could turn 2 switches on, then while peeking around the corner turn one of those off.

The riddle's phrasing might be misleading. Whether purposefully or not, only Cyrano knows.

Ooh, I know the answer to this one, but only because I've had this problem before and the answer was told to me then. So, I'm going to wait and give others a chance to figure it out.

It seems like it'd take longer to work it out in my head than it would to just do some simple trial and error. That could just be lack of intelligence on my part, though.

I thought this thread was a rhetorical question in itself. The solution for this riddle should be widely known. I really like this simple construction, because most people (especially children, who are probably the target group for this) wouldn't believe that a (perceived) step backwards could solve the whole problem.

EDIT: I'm referring to the OP of course.

I'd thought, if you can unscrew one of the bulbs, and then turn on two switches and peak over the corner once, there will be a 66.6% chance of finding the answer. But it didn't sound acceptable to me.

hm. okay then. If you wanted to walk all the way into the room to check, rather than just looking, you could turn 2 switches on for a bit, turn one of those two off, and then check to see which of the unlit bulbs was warm.

If you only get to look at them, and nothing else, I'll have to think a minute on that one.

Here's a boring yet somewhat humorous mathematical riddle. Absurd can probably solve this in two seconds.

Q: A man has a 12 liter jug of beer, and wants to split it in half, but only has a 8 liter and a 5 liter jug. How can he do it?

    A:
The easiest solution is as follows: Fill the 8 liter jug (then we have (4,8,0) in the 12 liter, 8 liter, and 5 liter, respectively.). Then fill the 5 liter with the 8 liter (4,3,5). Pour the five back into the 12 (9,3,0). Then transfer the 3 in the 8 liter jug into the 5 liter jug (9,0,3). Fill the 8 liter with the 12 liter (1,8,3). Then Finish filling the 5 liter with the 8 liter (1,6,5). Finally, pour the 5 liter back into the 12 liter bottle, for (6,6,0). Voila. Another solution is as follows: (12,0,0) -> (4,8,0) -> (0,8,4) -> (8,0,4) -> (8,4,0) -> (3,4,5) -> (3,8,1) -> (11,0,1) -> (11,1,0) -> (6,1,5) -> (6,6,0). Not too easy though.

Why doesn't he just pour 6 of the liters into the 8 liter jug?

Turn two switches on for a bit, then turn one off and look in. Rather than walking all the way in to touch the bulb, detect the heat with your super-sight.

Yeah, but... that's less efficient, and anyway you prohibited it with your wording (yeah, Aiss caught that, but I'm not letting you off the hook ).
