At the moment I can see 64 different types. I'm not quite sure if there are more...
Distinguishing between 256 types is hardly possible I think. It would always be a guess instead of a type diagnosis...

Most people do damage to their sanity when they try to identify more than 8 types.
subtypes do exist.
but there are only 16 ways of how elements can be arranged. The subtypes have probably more to do with how those elements interact with themselves.
The arrangement defines the relationships, therefor I say 16 is the most important.
