Default How do you say SOCIONICS?

We talked about this on stickam last night and I'm just wondering what everyone thinks about this. To me, it's always been socionics pronounced So-see-onics but I've now heard a few who say so-she-onics. I think it has much to do with accents and where someone is from.

I pronounce it the second way - but according to the dictionary (through similar words like 'sociobiology'), I believe the first way would be the most correct. I can't really understand the notation though .

Why is this in general discussion?

EDIT: And I pronounce so-ci-o-ni-ka. Not sure how it would translate phonetically in english.

It's my first question that actually has to do with socionics in this forum. Why would it not belong here?

If it was me, I would have pretended it was some new hip term, thus making me seem extremely cool instead of looking like a complete idiot.

I kinda like to look like a complete idiot here sometimes though... It makes the times when I actually use my brain, seem like golden moments when I surprise people that I'm not truly a retard like I try to make everyone believe most of the time.

Yoy does seem like it would be a cool word now that I think of it. I have a guy from Puerto Rico that I work with who'd pronounce Joy's name as Yoy.

Americancer brought it up in the chat last night and it the first time I'd even really thought that it's pretty normal to hear it that way... which completely baffled me...haha.

This thread does not have to do with socionics as it does not discus socionics, it just discuses the pronunciation of a word, and as such belongs in anything goes. IMO. Consider your track record preserved .

    - Sorry, but I think I have to go now.
    - Okay.
    - So ... See you at Nick's, then?
    - No.
    - Why not? Aren't you going?
    - It's called Socionics -- not Socio@nics.
    - ... What on earth are you talking about?
    - Skip the @ ... and you'll be a Humanist ... a real Empath ...
    - Have you gone mad? What is the matter with you?
    - Skip the @ and you'll be FiNe ... and you will get the name of the model right too ... ... So, see you Nick's!
    - My name is not Nick.
    - Never mind ... So ...
    - So ...?
    - Yeah ... Go on!
    - ... I don't understand you, my friend.
    - So ...?
    - Well, I guess ... So ... See you ... Nick's place ... no?
    - Yes! That's right! Now you got it right!

I predict this pronunciated schism will lead to some serious internecine warfare. Teh sosheonyx crowd will wind up culled since they're naturally inferior (if they weren't they would have won, right?).

    soseeONicks

In English the "ee" sound tends to palatalize "s" sounds when it is treated as part of a diphthong. E.g. social -> "SOH-shul". If you are pronouncing the "i" as an "ee", which most people do, it's more likely that most people would prefer the "s" pronunciation. The "sh" sound would likely only come into play if you pronounced it "soSHONicks."

I think of it by analogy with "sociology" and "sociopath". But you can say it how you like, I'm not gonna get on anyone's case about it.

yeah, some make the case as in social but to me the socio and socia pronunciations of words are quite different. Either way though, it's just something that I'd never even thought would be said a different way than I'd initially said it when I read it the first time. I guess I should go back to my bubble where the rest of the world doesn't exist and just play with my marbles and he-man figures or something.

You do realize you people who say so-she-onics are cheating, right. Onics is written as o-nics, and consists of two sylables, not one. Also, I would like to collect my prize for saying the word in the fewest possible syllables without cheating.

    Everyone, repeat after me: so-show-nigs

The Russian transliteration ends up something like: Sotsioniko. That can go both ways, but I think So-see-on-iks is probably closer. I say we all pronounce the word with a Russian accent from now on, though.
"How could we forget those ancient myths that stand at the beginning of all races, the myths about dragons that at the last moment are transformed into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love."
-- Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet
