Default Sleep Position Gives Personality Clue

BBC NEWS | Health | Sleep position gives personality clue
If you want an insight into somebody's true personality, then try to catch a glimpse of the way they sleep.

Scientists believe the position in which a person goes to sleep provides an important clue about the kind of person they are.

Professor Chris Idzikowski, director of the Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service, has analysed six common sleeping positions - and found that each is linked to a particular personality type.

"We are all aware of our body language when we are awake but this is the first time we have been able to see what our subconscious posture says about us."

Percentages correspond to the percent of participants who sleep in the indicated positions.

I think I, generally, sleep in the fetal position, but sometimes I'm in the yearner position. If I don't have an extra pillow, I'll sometimes stick a hand in between my knees.

Bummer, they don't even have my sleep position on here.

I tend to vary between foetal, log, yearner, freefaller, and vampire (on my back, hands crossed over my chest/stomach)

•The yearner (13%): People who sleep on their side with both arms out in front are said to have an open nature, but can be suspicious, cynical. They are slow to make up their minds, but once they have taken a decision, they are unlikely ever to change it.

•Soldier (8%): Lying on your back with both arms pinned to your sides. People who sleep in this position are generally quiet and reserved. They don't like a fuss, but set themselves and others high standards.

That depends on what I had to eat that night.

I sometimes sleep like the freefaller except on my left side with my right leg pulled up to my right side such that my stomach rests on the mattress. Usually the left leg also bends slightly. No idea where my arms go.

Freefaller is the only position I can sleep in. All the other ones, I have breathing problems with...I basically stop breathing.

I used to sleep like that. Then I flipped over, and now I'm a starfish. lol I can't sleep on my stomach any more. I guess I'm not used to it, so it gives me a crink in my neck.

When I go to sleep, its almost always in the freefaller position. Anything else feels uncomfortable and unnatural. However when I wake up I'll often find myself in a completely different position, usually foetus, log, or soldier.

Starfish (5%): Lying on your back with both arms up around the pillow. These sleepers make good friends because they are always ready to listen to others, and offer help when needed. They generally don't like to be the centre of attention.

Soldier (8%): Lying on your back with both arms pinned to your sides. People who sleep in this position are generally quiet and reserved. They don't like a fuss, but set themselves and others high standards.

Actually half soldier, half starfish. One arm up, one arm down. Then I tilt to the side to keep from snoring because it wakes me up.

I can't fall asleep unless I'm in the soldier position. Sometimes I'll go fetal but that's usually when I'm starting to wake up in the morning but don't really want to get up.

Freefall (7%): Lying on your front with your hands around the pillow, and your head turned to one side. Often gregarious and brash people, but can be nervy and thin-skinned underneath, and don't like criticism, or extreme situations.

one time an ISFj girlfriend of mine got pissed off that I slept this way, she wanted me to sleep like either a yearner or fetus and i couldn't

Freefaller, sometimes soldier if I'm on a smaller bed.

I sleep on my side with my legs in a scissor pattern, one or both arms under the pillow.

I'm like a combination between freefaller and yearner.

I do however do the fetal alot especially if the bed is short or if its cold at the base of the covers and I need to curl up to preserve body heat at my feet.

I do the soldier when I sleep with other people in the room.

If I'm just being natural though its probably like the freefaller and yearner.

    I never do the starfish
