Default What the deuce am I?

    Hello there,

I would be very grateful if you could bring my typological identity crisis to resolution.

I am what you might call, a creative type, prone to doubts, loss of focus, and periods of depression. I love learning, but I insist on teaching myself everything. I simply fail in educational environments. Back at college, I would go in completely prepared, having read up on all there is to know on the subject(s), and then end the year knowing absolutely nothing! I suppose I was guilty of getting distracted, making friends and socialising.

Despite this, I have always thought of myself as an introvert. I go into social situations always nervously, but when I am comfortable, I can be as loud and expressive as anyone else (perhaps too much)! I'm not very consistent though, as I can be drained of all energy without warning, and end the night sullen, and feeling slightly ill. I often go for months without a word to any of my friends (for which I am sorry about). I'm just not very good at maintaining multiple threads in my life simultaneously. One thing always rules over my head at the expense of everything else.

I value work-ethic. I slavishly devote myself to my goals and scold myself if I have not done everything I set out to do in a day. I'm always aware of the passing of time: the future has a foreboding power, and I hate to look back to the past as it only highlights how much time I have already lost. I guess, as a result, I can be somewhat overbearing at times. I feel I must make sure everyone else is doing what needs to be done to ensure that dinner is ready at a reasonable time (left to themselves, my family regularly leave it past 9 pm, sometimes as late as 10 pm). This is not something I have always done. I used to be so much more detached from everything.

To add some miscellany: I'm an avid reader. I set an absolute minimum of 100 pages to read every day. I have a whole repertoire of voice impressions I do. I recently purged video games from my life. Don't miss them. I must have a death wish. At my birth, I was half-strangled by my umbilical cord. Since age 15, I have been blessed with a 7(ish)-inch scar running up my forearm after a rendezvous with an interior door full of glass. It was that day when I finally realised why deoxygenated blood bleeds out red and not blue. I'm not sure the cleaners were delighted with my donations!

I would post a photo, but I have nothing to hand. Feel free to ask me questions if this is not enough to go on.

    Thank you.

Don't you mean that oxygenated blood is red? And welcome to the forum. I still have no idea what type you are. Maybe INFp.

Thanks. Yes, I do. I was like, "ah, it comes out red because its mixing with oxygen in the atmosphere!" I'd just come out of a science lesson on the subject that day.

I don't really relate to the INFp descriptions. I'm pretty sure I'm a Beta, though.

You are both wrong. Matrix, you might want to consider getting your money back for that science lesson since they obviously taught you incorrect information.

Human blood is always red. No exceptions.

You're right. De-oxygenated blood is actually dark red. Its an illusion of light diffusion through the skin. Its a common misconception, perpetuated by the British National Curriculum. Still, its what I thought at the time.

Does everyone think I am IEI? I have too much energy. I don't need anyone but myself to motivate me, so that surely rules out an SLE dual. I'm very critical of laziness. Besides, I keep reading lines like this, "always the slave, never the leader." I am noooo ones slave! Well, maybe my own. Oh, and I'm very thrifty with money. I hate waste.

Unless you're a spider -- then it would be hemocyanin -- like a blue ink cartridge.

"Reason to this madness" "most grateful" - choice of words, higher than average emphasis, slightly dramatic tone.... INFp

Good observation. All these signs point to INFp. Though I should add it was written with a touch of irony I'm sure you picked up on as well. Maybe the word "creative" at the top of my original post has misdirected everyone. As a child I was emotionally deaf. Didn't understand them. Furthermore, I found them embarrassing. I didn't read a work of fiction until I was 13. I would only read factual books. Does this rule out a "feeling" type?

No, I don't think this rules out a feeling type. Many INFps are very intellectual people, Newton for example most likely being one of them. I often read nothing but fiction when I was a kid, but this doesn't limit me from the possibility of considering myself to be a thinker. I know of an ESFp who really enjoys math and science and tutors in those subjects professionally. It's really not appropriate to judge type by interests alone. I knew an INTp once who loved Greek mythology.

I'm beginning to agree with you, @Eldanen. I can't really be any other type other than INFp. I have probably just developed my and (to a lesser extent) . I identify with the function order, I just found the descriptions way off. Could it be possible that I am the Normalising Subtype of INFp, to take hypothetically DCNH (Gulenko).

On Sir Isaac Newton, I was under the impression that has was INTp -- the focus of physical, observable laws, etc. Do you know of any evidence of him being and valuing?

    Thanks for your help.

I don't really follow the DCNH system myself. It might work for others, but my understanding of socionics is heavily dependent on observation. I've never been able to see any hint of this subtype system in several different people, enough to say that it's a global feature pertaining to type. Most of the descriptions are too general for me to believe they are anything but a repeat of the classical Greek temperaments. And they are just that: temperaments, not type.

And yes, it's very possible for you to be INFp and not display much visible Fe. In particular with Fe creatives, the expression of Fe is often very subtle or withheld. The focus of Ti in many INFps is so strong that they can mislabel themselves as thinkers just as Jung himself did. One identifying feature of superid Ti though is that it is often rather laborious or even byzantine. The lack of Te requires a longer train of thought to reach the same conclusion. Te in conjunction with Ti allows for a certain amount of simplification of thought process. Te, so to speak, makes the route to a conclusion in the T arena more efficient. Newton shared this characteristic with all the other great INFps. Might I also mention that he was also interested in alchemy and other occult subjects I believe? Betas love the occult lol. Ti superid plus involution makes it even worse.
