    Default Annie Hall

    characters?

alby singer - he is some sort of XNTp in this (like every movie.) i can't decide which one. i'm leaning towards the idea that he's /supposed/ to be INTp in this, though. this is open to discussion. i know he's supposed to be "himself" in every movie but is that INTp or ENTp? that was debated quite a bit last time his name came up here. i can relate somewhat but i have a feeling i'm not nearly as hard on others as INTjs are.
annie hall - ISFp? maybe? i think. superfriendly, sort of tongue-twistery shy. "you're hostile, thin, and tired." - (seems like a very ISFp sort of remark heh.)

the way they get close to eachother and then push eachother away (him w/ his jealousy, her with her own weird paranoia) reminds me of superegos or activity partners.

    any other interpretations?

why INTj? well aside from not being a victim type. he has the irritating, self-improvement oriented, self-absorbed, worrying, nervous, intellectual INTj thing going on this one.

I haven't seen it for a while. I should especially see it again now that I've had a relationship with an ISFp.

Anyway, one thing that stuck out was that part of their conflict was over him wanting her to become more intellectual and less hedonistic. I often find that ISFps are rather shortsighted (Careless?) like this.

yeah she didn't appreciate the whole "you should take night classes" suggestion and his controlling nature. this must always be the thing that sucks about INTjs/ISFps. too much perfectionism/anal-retentiveness and too much freedom-seeking to balance each other out.

Does everyone here agree that Woody Allen's character here, and Woody Allen overall, is INTj? It seemed that before, the debate was over whether he was INTp or ENTp. Dmitri typed him as INTp. A number of people on the forum thought he was ENTp.

Well, he may be an Alpha, but almost all of his serious dramas are about beta/gamma families. I think INTp is a serious possibility.

i don't think that "everyone agrees" that his characters mostly seem INTj (the nervousness, i think.) i also thought he was ENTp for a while, but i really don't think allen comes off as INTp IRL (or in his films.) however something about him (negativism?) seems to lead people towards thinking INTp.

the issue with annie hall is that their relation was so extremely poor throughout the film. activity relations seem really horrid.

It wasn't that it was so poor...it's that he acted like such a jerk. He sabotaged the relationship. I think the point of the film was to make himself look really bad to highlight how good she was.

But actually, I don't remember getting a strong Si sense from her. I seem to recall her being kind of NF-ish. But I would need to see it again to be sure.

And I think Woody Allen is a Ne base type.

I think there tends to be a bias on the forums that any couple, whether in real life or in fiction, must be dual or activity. Actually, I think there are a lot of films where there characters are duals, and usually I think that's because the writers/directors are consciously aware of the theory...if not from Socionics directly, they know it through MBTI or other forms. But in those cases there tend to be a lot of details where the movie actually builds a case. Otherwise, we shouldn't necessarily assume they're in the same quadra even though they're pictured in a relationship.

Looking at some scenes, it seems they're both N types. Both have problems with practical things like cooking lobsters or dealing with spiders. I suspect they are illusionary or comparative, or something like that. They don't really have a sense of complementarity in terms of filling in for others' weaknesses in a Socionics sense. Rather, they probably were together based on some sense of similarity rather than of difference. Woody Allen's characters are always looking for someone who is eccentric enough to tolerate his own eccentricities.

The Annie character is very ethereal and nebulous; she mostly reacts to him. I think her overall vagueness might be compatible with being IEE or IEI. Overall, she's mostly amused by him and acts sort of as an audience, giving him emotional support. Later, of course, she becomes annoyed by him.

His intellectuality and imaginative use of the film medium (especially his common technique of "breaking the fourth wall") lead many people to assume he must be Alpha NT.

Nevertheless, the main thing his character does in his films is present some sort of strategic response to different life situations that seems Te-oriented, and is consistent with ILI, or at least that seems to be the case with the character in this one. The comic effect comes because his strategies, while confident and successful in a narrow sense, tend to reflect a low awareness of the world around him and of what is considered "normal." This suggests possibly Se weakness and a need for others to show him what he actually looks like in a situation.
