although i admit that dustin hoffman's incredible natural INTp-ness totally gets in the way of ever typing him as something else.asdfasdfasdf

If I may suggest, Hoffman seems to me to be INFP, but I could certainly be wrong.
Well I am back. How's everyone? Don't have as much time now, but glad to see some of the old gang are still here.

Actually INFp was for Hoffman, I'm not totally sure which he is, but leaning to INFp.

As for the characters, she's ISFj and he's INTp. Good example of an Aggressor/Victim Activity relationship, right?

why not INTj? i saw her as a total aggressor, as well. i didn't immediately think ISFj though, honestly. aren't they pretty much known for their ability to remain faithful?

Maybe. Known also, maybe, for their ability to emotionally manipulate others (Fi) using sex (Se). What other Se type fits better? She had Ij self-control, and was confident in ethics, unlike Hoffman's character Ben.

The main impressions I got of Ben were his inability to verbalize his thoughts (Ni + weak Fe) and his extreme awkwardness in social situations (Fe PoLR), which was the focus of much of the movie.

you mean the part where she's like, "bah, it was a shotgun wedding, i'm justified in cheating." i don't know if that's ISFj . this actually seems more logical to me, somehow. i could buy ISFj or ISTj .

    INTjs are not socially awkward?

I haven't seen it in a while, so I'm going to refer to the script.

    MRS. ROBINSON
You've known me nearly all of
    your life. You must have
    formed some opinion.

    BEN
    Well - I've always thought
that you were a very - nice -
    person.

    MRS. ROBINSON
Did you know I was an alcoholic?

    BEN
    What?

    MRS. ROBINSON
    Did you know that?

    BEN
    Look - I think I should be
    going -

    MRS. ROBINSON
    Sit down, Benjamin.

    BEN
Mrs. Robinson - if you don't
mind my saying so - this
    conversation is getting a
    little strange. Now I'm sure
that Mr. Robinson will be here
    any minute and -

    MRS. ROBINSON
    No.

    BEN
    What?

    MRS. ROBINSON
My husband will be back quite
    late.

They look at each other. Ben is half standing.

    MRS. ROBINSON
He should be gone for several
    hours.
She is very deliberate about the impression each statement is making on Ben. An ISTj would not be nearly so controlled about things like that. She hides what she is really thinking for a significant period of time, and is perfectly comfortable with it. ISTjs are more straight-to-the-point.

The main impressions I got of Ben were his inability to verbalize his thoughts (Ni + weak Fe) and his extreme awkwardness in social situations (Fe PoLR), which was the focus of much of the movie.

They are, but INTj Fe is stronger than INTp Fe, so there is a difference.
