    Default Enneagram Type Six: Defender

since the other thread has been closed, this is new thread for posting things for Enneagram 6

Some people see the world as dangerous, and some see it as safe. Some see it as just or unjust. Nevertheless, we all live in the same world. Elements of our personality color our views, and human perception is little more than an inkblot test. One purpose of the Enneagram of Personality is to describe the various lenses that distort our perception of the world. If you believe that the world is ultimately dangerous, that you must be aware and prepared, and that the objective of life is to survive, then you might be: TYPE SIX: THE LOYAL SKEPTIC (Also known as “The Problem Solver”)

Six is a head type, which means the primary “action area” for Type Six is their own thoughts. That is, 6s are often identifying problems and thinking about solutions. The common theme is that Sixes want to resolve their condition of doubt so that they can return to the Holy Idea of faith. It should be noted at this point that Sixes tend to doubt everything, including their own thoughts and the allegiances of others. Sixes sometimes feel a push and pull in their own thoughts, often desiring clarity due to their awareness of muddy possibilities. This search for clarity is better defined as the search for the “right answer”, the answer that will elevate the Six above risk and beyond any harm.

Type 6 monikers: Loyalist, Problem Solver, Doubter, Defender
Quiet Doer, Faithful Companion, Reluctant Whistle-blower, True Believer, Vigilante, Unyielding Conformist, Braveheart, Dauntless Explorer

    Quick Facts about Type Six:
    Holy Idea: Faith
    Vice: Fear :: Virtue: Courage
    Enneagram Triad: Head (Fear Fixation)
    Hornevian Triad: Compliant
    Harmonic Triad: Reactive
    Freudian Association: Superego

this song was posted by by @Olga a while ago, and has struck me as either "seducer" sx/sp or "darkside" so/sx e6 lyrics

Hope can drown lost in thunderous sound
Fear can claim what little faith remains
But I carry strength from souls now gone
They won't let me give in...

    I will never surrender
We'll free the Earth and sky
    Crush my heart into embers
    And I will reignite...
    I will reignite

Death will take those who fight alone
But united we can break a fate once set in stone

Just hold the line until the end
Cause we will give them hell...

    I will never surrender
We'll free the Earth and sky
    Crush my heart into embers
    And I will reignite...
    I will reignite...
    I will reignite.

How does one tell the difference between type 6 and general anxiety? When I discovered the enneagram I typed as 6 because I was told that it's the type most prone to anxiety and got a few 6 votes on another forum, but now I'm being told that it's not related?

Although type 6 is often anxious, that is not all there is to it. 6s, especially 6w5s, are primarily focused on finding a set of rules that will universally apply. They are the most paradoxical type. In fact, whatever 6s are, they are also the opposite.

    "One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
    though the voices around you
    kept shouting
    their bad advice –
    …But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do…
    It was already late
    enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
    branches and stones.
    But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
    the stars began to burn
    through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
    which you slowly
    recognized as your own,
    that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
    into the world,
    determined to do
the only thing you could do –
    determined to save
the only life you could save."

Probably less from the perspective of a six and more describing the effects of our unhealthy behaviors on others (this band is said to be E6-heavy in general):

    All Hail the Forer Effect!

(It really seems like that's all Enneagram is, but especially poor 6, who receives the brunt of personality typologist's collective attacks, even more than the Zodiac sign Virgo somehow. I think 6 is supposed to be so ambiguous just so that those typologists can put anyone they don't like in it, then bash them. "Defender" is kind of a cool name though, so it was probably made up by the community of pissed-off "6s" as sly revenge. Or by non-"6s" who thought a certain character was silly maybe, who knows.)

But type 6 (especially 6w5) is Virgo! They are practically the same archetype, that of the rule-focused intellectual, or the traditional Melancholy type.

I'd summarize it as the sense that your anxieties are just emotions, and you have to figure out where they're coming from and if they're useful. And if they're not, you nineishly push them out of your brain and ignore them. 6s attach so much morality to the idea that they "should" worry, "should" investigate, "shouldn't" trust themselves, and taking control of your own mental space borrows from the general "my territory vs the world" conflict of the gut triad (8/9/1) in a more positive way.

Danger is an E6 topic, so is confronting it. The space conquest topic fits neatly into that, on top of the 6 SX lyrics talking about a couple in distress.

The Samurai - pinnacle example of healthy Enneagram 6 in history. He can reconcile opposing principles and has a codex of virtue. I always ask myself what one of them would do when I am in difficult situations since I integrate phobic 6.

    - The Samurai is encouraged to be trusting and sceptic alike toward superiors, there is a right time for both. He responds adequately in case of injustice.
    - The Samurai is in touch with nature and adapts its qualities. Nevertheless, he rests within himself and is resourceful.
    - The Samurai is loyal and a community person, but not clingy.
    - The Samurai is sincere to a fault, but loving.
    - The Samurai unleashes brutality when needed, is peaceful when needed. His goal is not to apply all of the violent techniques he has acquired. It gives him natural confidence - he does not show off.
    - The Samurai is patient in handling forces against him, but speeds up at the right moment.
    - The Samurai isn't lighthearted, but not hardened.
    - The Samurai civilizes the mind and makes savage the body.

    So where's the map?

The Primary types (3, 6, and 9) have the potential for the greatest gift from within each Center — a potentiality that, by nature, generates some degree of polarity switching between ideal/connected and disconnected from the Center’s core gift.

Sixes, for example, can be highly intuitive (a higher ‘central’ vibration of the Head Center), but they generally don’t trust their intuition, so they become disconnected from the optimal function of the Head Center… but when connected, have a unique gift there.
