I made a list more than two years ago where I ranked my favourite artists in terms of how many tracks I liked by them and weighting more heavily if I rated their tracks especially highly. The attempt was incomplete, and I've just been adding to it. It is still patchy (There were some artists I really like that were omitted, and in the lower orders of the list, I was becoming less sure of whether an artist met my vague minimum standard to merit being on the list).

It is based on album tracks (not live tracks), and is rather mechanical: there are obvious examples of artists that are a lot better live than on studio albums/singles. This is also of course heavily biased to artists who have released a lot of stuff. It does not include classsical composers or soundtrack artists, although it includes Post-Rock ones (which I think means in some cases, their ranking is too high compared to a non Post-Rock artist). If there was a tie, a simple measure was to put more recent on top, but my original ranking system was more sophisticated two years ago.

    1) David Bowie
    2) Manic Street Preachers
    3) Electrelane
    4) Pink Floyd
    5) The Beatles

My top classical composers (including soundtrack composers) are: Ludwig van Beethoven, Peter Tchaikovsky, Philip Glass, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Dmitri Shostakovich, Nobuo Uematsu, Camille Saint-Saëns, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Maurice Ravel, George Gershwin, Jean Sibelius, Felix Mendelssohn, Edvard Grieg, Gustav Holst, Ennio Morricone, John Williams, Howard Shore, Edward Elgar, Frédéric Chopin, Claude Debussy, Johann Strauss.

Beethoven would probably appear between Pink Floyd and The Beatles in terms of a best "album" face-off, and Uematsu would be between The Smiths and Muse.

Bands/musicians that I like all or most of their songs..

    Led Zeppelin
    Bob Dylan
    The Doors
    Pink Floyd
    Simon and Garfunkel
    Credence Clearwater Revival
    Goo Goo Dolls
Crosby Stills Nash and Young/ Buffalo Springfield/ The Byrds
    The Guess Who
    Nirvana
    The Eagles
Lynyrd Skynyrd (with the original band members only that died in plane crash)
    Tom Petty
    Smashing Pumpkins
    Red Hot Chili Peppers
    Neil Young
    Steppenwolf
    Elton John
    Queen
    AC/DC
    The Beatles
    Rolling Stones
    Tim McGraw

I used to be obsessed with Robert Plant & Led Zeppelin when I was younger. I listened to Nirvana religiously during most of my teen years, went through an Aerosmith stage (don't laugh, lol), but I moved onto Bob Dylan in college, and later CSNY. Right now I'm just into alternative. I feel a recent shift in my musical tastes. I think it's because I'm getting older or something.

I also like quite a few of the Lumineers & Mumford and Sons songs, but I wouldn't say I like them all...there's a lot of songs I like, but I don't like many of that band or singers songs, so I didn't list them. Counting Crows is a good example. I really really like a few of their songs, but the other ones seem just 'meh' to me. Like Mr. Jones, Round Here, and Colorblind are a few of my favorite songs.

I can get into movie sound tracks too. My favorite is The Graduate soundtrack. I love the music in that movie. I think it just makes the movie. I can blather on into eternity about the music in that movie and how much I love it. I also really like the Girl, Interrupted's sound track and the music in The Thomas Crown Affair movie. The newer movie.

When I find new interesting band I hear it for some time. It's hard to say there is a single band which I think is significantly better than all others. It's also hard to name several ones, as it's easy to find something new and not worse.
