    Default 2016 US Election

US-centric thread, but anybody can vote, state opinions, and argue dramatically (without personal insults ^^)

its early for this, but its multiple choice if you're undecided.

If I cannot personally insult Donald Trump supporters, I cannot participate in this thread. i don't have that much self-restraint.

On a serious note, Bernie Sanders for his politics, but I have too much fear that he might lose to a Republican candidate for being a socialist (ENEMY ROARRRRRRR). So for electability, Hillary Clinton. She did kick ass during the Benghazi hearing. <3

I never thought I would say this, but given the line-up, the "best" (read, the one who does the least damage, presumably) Republican president would be Jeb Bush.

I deleted my Trump insult. It was hard.

actually after making the poll i realized i don't even want to vote in it yet. i actually have no idea what i want to do this election.
republicans are out because theyre republicans.
hillary is out because she's a lizard person.
bernie is meh because i've become ambivalent about how to view economic issues after reading hazlitt n shit (ey @Capitalist Pig)

i was thinking about just not voting altogether, not giving legitimacy to our fucked up system, stick it to the man blah blah, but i don't really like that idea either.

maybe you guys will convince me of something.

Depends on what your priorities are. I was very sad that Joe Biden decided not to run because he is electable AND a decent person. I have my reservations about Hillary in some ways, but lots of the crap that is hurled at her is partisan bullshit. Bush and Cheney have effectively created ISIS, which goes to show that U.S. presidencies have a far reach and Hillary is by far the one person with the greatest knowledge of how global dynamics work.

Read people's policy proposals on their websites. But don't not vote, seriously. You can't want any of the Republicans in office (from what I know of your values). There won't be a perfect (or even adequate for you perhaps) candidate, but there is always the lesser of two evils.

Edited to add: Hazlitt is a bit outdated, I would say...

    My selectsmart answers:

    High priority:
Would support the pro-choice positions of organizations like NARAL Pro Choice USA.
    Would oppose the death penalty.
Would support gun control legislation recommended by groups such as the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence
Would have a history of supporting increases in the minimum wage.
Would generally support laws that offer citizenship to immigrants who entered the United States illegally. Sees immigration as a net positive to our economy.
Would support the health insurance reform bill signed by Obama (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act).
Would support marriage for same sex couples.
Would prefer to consider both tax increases and spending cuts as a way to balance the budget.
Would favor positions of environmental groups like the League of Conservation Voters.
Anthropogenic (human-caused) climate change is real, a real concern and requires concerted action by governments and citizens.
Would tend to support fair trade policies.

    Medium priority:
Would support a general decriminalization of marijuana.
Would favor the pro-labor positions of the AFL-CIO and similar groups.
Would oppose the building on new nuclear power plants and/or the reopening of shuttered nuclear power plants.
Would tend to agree with and attract the endorsements of the United States Humane Society and other animal protection organizations.

No opinion (generally because I don't know much about the issue being raised):
What would be your ideal candidate's position on EDUCATION?
What would be your ideal candidate's position on VOTER REGISTRATION?
What would be your ideal candidate's position on SOCIAL SECURITY?

I think the Science section only had one question (about funding space travel), not sure if that is the same for everybody else. The map is cool.

i'll be voting for whoever the Democratic candidate will be. i think the candidate will have to be Hillary, assuming the private email server stuff doesn't sink her. i don't have a problem with Bernie, but he's like a socialist version of libertarians like Ron Paul - supporters love them for their ideological purity, the perception that they are anti-establishment and will shake things up, etc. but they're not going to win an election.

even though i won't be voting for any Republican, the field of candidates seriously concerns me. is that really the best American conservatives have to offer? besides the obvious crazies like Trump and Carson and Fiorina, etc., the "moderate" establishment candidate is supposed to be Jeb Bush, a guy who says a lot of stupid/insensitive things in public, and supports failed/bad policy (massive tax cuts for the wealthy, etc.)? there's also Marco Rubio, a guy who misses a lot of votes in the Senate and reportedly doesn't even like the job - okay, so you don't want to do the job your constituents elected you to do, yet you want people to make you president? frankly, every single Republican candidate holds offensive, regressive views on some level, and/or is unqualified for the job.

I also got bernie sanders as the #1 spot on that test, go figure. Too bad the current presidential election system operates more like a reality TV show then an objective gathering and analysis of data.

Bernie Sanders all the way. I have many socialist tendencies myself. My first election will be this one - quite exciting.

Hypothetically, if I had to pick a Republican candidate, I'd pick Rand Paul only because he wouldn't tell me what to do.

The US needs a total overhaul. Sometimes you have to go down, to rebound and come back up. I'm going with Trump.

Oh dear. Trump has a 7% chance of becoming President in 2016 according to this: http://www.predictwise.com/politics/2016president
(57% for Hillary, 16% for Rubio, 7% for Sanders, 4% for Jeb)

(It also separately has a 58% implied probability of a Democrat candidate, with 42% Republican, which obviously doesn't tally with the above figures)

I think Donald Trump being a viable candidate in America illustrates why foreign countries see us as arrogant.
I would say that ethically you are still supposed to act as if you have unilateral responsibility; but simultaneously you have to be able to see the other as a fully autonomous, free, aware person.

Medicalizing social problems has the additional benefit of rendering society not responsible for those social ills. If it’s a disease, it’s nobody’s fault. Yay empiricism.

It's easier to exclude candidates than to get excited about anyone: Santorum is on the young side, I find Trump a little difficult to take seriously, Joe Biden is Joe Biden, the Billary crew are what they are and everyone knows it, this Sanders kid needs to come back to planet Earth first before he can be taken seriously, I don't dislike lady Fiorina sufficiently to want her anywhere near the presidency.

I'm clueless about most of the others.

so i dunno who bernie sanders is but he was top on my list, but still not really much above trump and clinton who don't seem very ideal.

interesting, he seems pretty down to earth, and i do see a lot of people voted for him on here.

    how's he polling?

ok, so from what i can determine hillary clinton is outpolling sanders, but sanders could beat trump, but carson is catching up to trump. so there needs to be more dirt on clinton?

there's simple things like why's a democrat got over $20 million of networth, and with such money how can she really care about common people.

I like Kid Rock but he is such a redneck. :/ Maybe he should run against Trump.

Clinton would beat Trump, too. He is not electable because he could never stand up to any of the Democratic candidates in presidential debates - he is clueless about politics and foreign policy. I mean, this is the guy who is seriously telling us that Mexico will pay for a border wall and that it is possible to deport 11 million immigrants. It's like fairy tale hour with this guy.

And running a country does not equal running a business, so he is not in any shape or form qualified. There needs to be a bit more than narcissism and delusions of grandeur.

Just a little bit of fun facts here. I just so happen to be a staunch libertarian but I would like to point out that us right-wing nutjobs do agree with the left on one very crucial area. Fuck the fascist bullshit currently running and ruining this country. A staunch liberal recently visited my neck of the woods, and was shocked to see that he drew thunderous applause when speaking about a few key issues. Here's the article: http://robertreich.org/post/132819483625.

And now, a fun diagram that sums up why he landed the experience he did.

I didn't read the instructions on the poll. I just voted for who I think I will win. I don't vote in elections. I always have something better to do. But I do have a million dollar prediction: Jeb Bush wins New Hampshire and eventually the presidency.

Carson pisses me off. Maybe Carson tells truth about his background, but many things are off to me....I have a lot of violence in my background and a wild temper in childhood. I've tamed it for the sake of my SO/SP ambitions and that's amplified my confidence, and strong can-do spirit. Because I have conquered my temper, I believe that I can conquer anything. I channel it into proactive things that will further my ambition to have the biggest castle on the block and that gives me an uncanny energy to do pretty much anything. But the temper still rages below, like a force of nature comparable to the rough seas. I've just naturally developed insulation strategies for keeping it in a more cooled state. For instance, when I talk I naturally keep my lips apart a lot. That's just a little subtle thing that I do reflexively that keeps my temper in a chilled compartment. You don't ever get rid of it, though, that's the point....Shit doesn't go away....it's just fine-tuning the drive to dominate everything in a way that won't disempower me. You go from dominating with fists to dominating with words. I can stay calm and in control in many situations, but there are still many situations where I have to get as far away from my anger as possible....my eyes go right up into the back of my head. Unless I feel the timing is right, in which case I'll take the head off of the person in my way....A teacher once told me that even me doing nothing, just sitting there, was enough to frighten people, like a force field around me....a violent, assertive quality I exude in a state of relaxation that can provoke a strong response from people....a smoke rising off ice. I ain't even trying to do it. I've had a couple older guys in public places try to engage me in prolonged staring contests. And I always win. This LSI guy at starbucks went off on me because I asked if he was in line. He just started calling me a loser and stuff. Like he wanted to fight. He was an older dude, like in his thirties. So I squared up to him and instead of punching him proceeded to stare him down. That's what I mean about taming my temper. It's still there, though. In the event he wanted to make a move I'd just clobber him, but then I could say he threw the first punch. I was calm and in control of the situation the whole time, but that doesn't mean I won't dominate the person. After a few minutes all that courage drained out of him and he went into fear mode. He looked visibly scared. He got out of the line, hurried over to his table, grabbed his computer and cable, and screwed out of the starbucks. Another guy used to tell me that I had murder in my eyes. He'd be like don't look at me like that! I know what he's talking about now. I didn't know then. But you know that I can fuck shit up. I don't have to literally threaten somebody to threaten them. Even just giving them a compliment can sound like a threat, or an insult. I walked up to the bar the other day and just said 'hi' and the bartender just jumped back like I snuck up on her and went BOOO. It's the icey tone that suggests your suffering won't move me, that I might want to kill you, that the capacity to inflict pain is just below the surface. Ultimately what I'm saying is that quality is all related to the wild temper I had as a kid (you don't have one without the other-- its ingrained to the kinesthetic) and if I told somebody things I did it wouldn't come as a surprise. And if journalists tried to vet my background there would be no end of people that would confirm the stuff i say and then some....a lot of exaggerations and myths spring up around me just because the way that I am makes almost anything believable, it feeds the imagination. That's why I think Carson is very likely full of baloney. I've lived the story he's trying to pass of as his own life narrative, and a lot of the more subtle aspects in his narrative feel very off from mine. If he was as violent as he claims, he would be more like me in ways that he's not.

Want to incite a collective suspicion and hatred of Muslims and undermine American freedoms? Vote Trump:

Donald Trump won’t rule out warrantless searches, ID cards for American Muslims

Yeah, I'm starting to genuinely worry that he could win. He can't possibly... right??

He might win the primaries, but he can't win the general election (neither can Carson, for different reasons). He pissed off too many Latino voters and it will become obvious that he has no clue about anything. Hillary will wipe the floor with him during the debates, especially now that foreign policy is a major issue. People will realize that they cannot possibly put a man in office who runs for president without knowing the difference between Hamas and Hezbollah or who doesn't know who the major terrorist figures are. He can fool uninformed people on the right now, but the American people as a whole won't elect him president.
