Default The 4 temperaments: choleric, sanguine, melancholy, phlegmatic

This was posted as part of this thread: http://www.the16types.info/vbulletin...and-last/page4

And, as to reactions to people, I would like to explain something else. Temperament influences two parts of this:

    1. How quickly you get an emotional/judgmental reactionwhich is either on of these two:
    a. a strong and immediate reaction
    b. a slow burn that takes time to build up

    2. How long that emotional reaction lasts is either one of these two:
    a. it wears off quick
    b. it tends to stay and hold for long

There are four basic temperaments, that also Jung used as a basis in his theories, and each of these has their feeling/judgment reactions that work in this way, according to the above chart I just made.

    Sanguine - 1a & 2a
    Choleric - 1a & 2b
    Melancholic - 1b & 2b
    Phlegmatic - 1b & 2a

How accurate do you think this is? Does it work for you?

According to this, I would be between choleric and melancholy. From reading more detailed temperament descriptions, I think melancholy is more likely for me. It doesn't mean I'm sad all of the time but if I'm feeling hurt or upset, it can take me a while to pull myself out of it.

A positive feeling, no. It gets to your guts and paralize you (for me).
When I witnessed that (process of feeling) in her, she wasn't experiencing a positive feeling.

More melancholic, but sometimes Phlegmatic. If 2b means stay mad after a sincere apology, then Phlegmatic.
Conflicts with my current type and DCNH. Maybe explains my Meged subtype more?

I've always called myself melancholeric. That's based on my understanding of the classical temperaments based on various sources, rather than going by this list of emotional reaction and duration.

I have a pretty phlegmatic, mucousy, slimy face that oozes down and encapsulates my melancholic heart.

All of it can apply depending on the situation and in different combinations.

    1. How quickly you get an emotional/judgmental reaction which is either on of these two:
    a. a strong and immediate reaction
    b. a slow burn that takes time to build up

well, I always identifyied the most with Sanguine and Choleric. But this is pretty much a moot question because science has disproved this theory and for a LONG time now.

These questions are too simplified - it majorly depends on a situation. I'm a mix of all three but melancholic. Well, actualy phlegmatic/choleric > sanguine.

For example, I feel very choleric/short tempered inside, but I remain phlegmatic looking on the outside, because I don't want to appear too agressive or crazy.

Depending on the nature of the emotion in question, I can vacillate b/w Sanguine and Choleric. Levels of external reactivity seem key though.

It's Pavlov's description of temperaments. Was created for animals and then linked to Halen's ancient temperaments.
This has sense for humans too. In some degree.

    I'd be "Melancholic - 1b & 2b" by this.

I tend to be low energy, rather predictable, and slow to change from one state to another.
If for some reason, I have a sudden emotional reaction or judgement to some external event, I tend to already know what my reaction might be to a certain category of event, and temper my inner state accordingly (others of course may have no such precognition, and/or perhaps don't feel the need to constrain/temper themselves...or is completely against their nature to even consider it).

If I suffer an emotional setback that comes completely out of leftfield, or if must make some response completely out of comfort zone...I think I probably try to at least maintain the illusion of continuing to tread water, perhaps while the ship is sinking (for this description to work, ships can swim). I suppose I don't generally like for people to "see me bleed": I want to be seen as a constant, something that doesn't change massively from day-to-day.

I don't see myself as melancholic.
Choleric when needed and it can be bit on/off unreliably. Sanguine (the non feelery , the non Se version) and phlegmatic are closest. *p temperament overall. Very weird kind of sanguine though. I don't fit in within the stereotypes at all. The guy who has constant weird smile on his face, is bit of provocative jokester and socially awkward. Ups and downs are part of picture. Phlegmatic, well sometimes I'm extremely like that. I don't think that it is main driver. As I said before: downs and ups. I think phlegmatic=sanguine mix.

There are lots of interpretations of the 4 types. Keirsey NF choleric is the most entertaining for the mind. Then there is that if you are logical then you are choleric Who knows... A lot of stereotypes lumped together without having any essence of the condition.

I am going to change my answer here to 1b 2b, for most of the time but it depends on the situation. Some people can trigger an immediate reaction. They are usually sx first. I would not say it stays a long time in my conscious mind but maybe in my subconscious.

I'm melancholic according to this, 1b and 2b. I do generally see myself as a melancholic so I'd say it's pretty accurate.

According to this, I am phlegmatic (1b & 2a). I've certainly been acting phlegmatic for quite a while... Even got "sloth" as my sin in this test.
It takes a while for me to get upset, and once the steam has went out and I have released the "upset-ness" or anger, I am rather quickly back to normal.

I used to be more Melancholic in the past. I've also been kind of Sanguine or Choleric before, during certain moments.

I don't think the temperaments are static, they can fluctuate depending on life circumstances and mental health.
Though one or two temperaments are probably more persistent or "natural".

I feel like at my healthiest, I would be a Phlegmatic-Sanguine blend.
    Atm, I am Phlegmatic-Melancholic.

I took this other test too which gave me higher on choleric than I think I am. I guess I can be, in cycles.

And, as to reactions to people, I would like to explain something else. Temperament influences two parts of this:

    1. How quickly you get an emotional/judgmental reactionwhich is either on of these two:
    a. a strong and immediate reaction
    b. a slow burn that takes time to build up
I don't know, could be either, but probably more "a".

    2. How long that emotional reaction lasts is either one of these two:
    a. it wears off quick
    b. it tends to stay and hold for long
    Definitely "a" way more often.

There are four basic temperaments, that also Jung used as a basis in his theories, and each of these has their feeling/judgment reactions that work in this way, according to the above chart I just made.

No, this doesn't work lol, I'm not all that Sanguine, I was more so when I was a teenager. Otherwise I'm Choleric on top of some sort of introverted default temperament, hard to say if it's Melancholic or Phlegmatic.

@Aylen's link has me at Choleric too, http://personality-testing.info/test...=2&M=1.7&S=1.9

Maybe 1a and 2a, I'm not sure. Does it last? idk, it might. And the test that Aylen posted gave me sanguine as a result. The description doesn't seem to fit me though.

    choleric: fire
    sanguine: air
    phlegmatic: water
    melancholic: earth

these are the original humors given by Hippocrates some centuries BC.

Do you people know if your astrological charts confirm this? You should make your chart ( https://www.astro.com/cgi/genchart.cgi) and see the prevalence of the planets in the elements.

I still don't know how to relate this to socion...
    funny though :]

    sanguine: air
    phlegmatic: water
    melancholic: earth

these are the original humors given by Hippocrates some centuries BC.

Do you people know if your astrological charts confirm this? You should make your chart ( https://www.astro.com/cgi/genchart.cgi) and see the prevalence of the planets in the elements.

I still don't know how to relate this to socion...
    funny though :]
Well if this counts, my astrological sign is a Fire one and I'm choleric when not in my introverted baseline. I still don't know if that's phlegmatic or melancholic tho'.

PS: I don't believe in astrology, just giving you a datapoint.

That's pretty cool; I didn't know about those correlations. I went to calculate my element % by predominance on astro.com and got a majority of earth, as well as a melancholic temperament, so it fits (at least for me).
