Most men don't prefer women to wear make up, yet a lot of women do. Women compare themselves to other women and judge other women.

It's not the media. It's biology. We're programed to judge ourselves in this way.

In past epochs, male members of the human species were more likely to survive, and consequently better fit to protect and provide for their offspring, if they were physically stronger and larger. Women members of the species were more likely to attract a potential mate and bear children if they were more sexually desirable. When men judge themselves, they covertly think to themselves: "Am I stronger/more intimidating (and thus more likely to survive) than that person?" When women judge themselves, they covertly say to themselves: "Am I better looking/more sexually desirable (and thus more likely to bear children) than that person?"

Yes, I know I sound like a Chauvinist pig right now, but for the vast majority of people, these underlying biological relics are still alive and well. Certain facets of the media only portray (although, admittedly isolate and magnify) these inborn inclinations. Our society (well, most of the societies still extant on this planet) have evolved past a hunter-gatherer stage.

Perhaps if you'd chosen a representative of the male gender that conforms more to current tastes you would have gotten different results. For example orlando bloom was a favorite for awhile (I don't know if that has changed).

Its a competition between women. Women will usually talk bad about other women (how they're dressed, their make-up, their mates etc.) in some sort of effort to make the other woman look bad or make themselves look better.
To be honest I don't really understand it myself, I usually hung out with guys growing up (except for a few trust worthy girls) because of the competition.

I think Orlando Bloom is adorable, but he is a bit girly. Really, guys like Joquain Phoenix and Christian Bale, who are more masculine (but not caricatures of what men think women like) but still very handsome, are ideal IMO.

Oh I think Jude Law is among the most gorgeous men out there too, but he's more handsome now that he's a bit older. Even though he's losing his hair.

Also, given the level of fitness of the average man, greater than average is really a small quantity.

And I think that great physical strength is very sexy. Unfortunately I can't say the same about huge muscles. I like the thin vertical line that leads to the belly-button.
