Who and exactly why watches this crap? It's the lowest ... meh it's typical for HBO to produce porn and get lauded for producing "mind boggling good" stuff.

Come on people, it's an expensive porn with a very bad message! I as a SEE can't stand the darkness of this series.

I watched an episode at a friend's house, and I would not say it is expensive porn with a bad message. I could not find a message, and I don't think it is exactly porn, either. I think it is "people continuously demonstrating worse behavior than you would expect, with nudity".

I can see where a lot of people would like that, or should I say, might be fascinated by it, in exactly the same way that they are fascinated by car accidents and the potential sight of something horrible that is not part of their daily lives. This orientation of the show brings in one demographic, and the nudity brings in another. I'll bet that the show makes a lot of money.

Personally, the hour or two that I spent watching it was enough. I don't need to do that again.

There was a game show host in the 70's who had a number of shows on television simultaneously. They were very popular, and he became fairly wealthy. After he retired, an interviewer told him that he thought he had great insight into the human psyche, and if television didn't have rules about what they could broadcast, what kind of show would he make, in order to draw the greatest audience? The game show host replied that he would roam the studio audience with fistfulls of dollars, looking for people who were together, and would then offer them increasingly large sums of money to do something horrible to someone in their group. Like kick Grandma down the stairs, for some amount of money. The game show host said that a show like that would be a real winner, but of course, he would not be allowed to do it on the live television of the time.

That was then, this is now.

i think the show is really good, but sometimes it does go overboard with the violence. i mean there's only so much torture & rape, etc. that people can stand watching. it also cheapens & desensitizes people to it, so then the showrunners have to constantly try and up the ante, going for ever more "shocking" violent scenes.

as for the sex scenes, they're not that bad imo. what's more annoying is how some characters who could be more multi-dimensional are just used as an excuse to show more T&A (e.g. the Sand Snakes in season 5).

Yeah, it's actually not bad, but HBO ruined it. Hell, even Martin complains about it and he makes a FORTUNE out of it! Not only that, but it made him famous as well(who'd have known for him otherwise?).

It's this HBO insistance on porn + violence desensitisation(wow tough word incoming!) that totally ruins it for me. Beneath it all is kinda medieval story written in fabulous fashion. But the show...ugh. Hate HBO.

the "porn"/nudity thing (not that it particularly bothered me or ruined the experience of watching the show) was part of what made the sparrows taking over really interesting to watch. it was like an attack on/righting the shows morals as much as part of the show.

I like the nudity; I think it's stupid that people are so bothered by naked bodies. What's the problem really?

But the show has an intricate storytelling that weaves each character into each other and shows you a more realistic consequence for how they live their lives (at least compared to most tv having a hero that always wins in the end). Plus they aren't afraid to kill off main characters or characters that you like, which makes the whole thing surprising and fun to watch along with the storytelling.

like arresting people for being homosexual? i'm assuming they're going to start executing people too, for their sexual practices. they'll probably enhance the show's violence. it can take extreme measures to purify the uncooperative soul of a sinner, after all.

    Let me ask you this:

Is it even possible it gets any more violent?

sorry, i phrased that so it could seem kind of shitty, I guess. To be clear, I personally don't consider homosexuality immoral.

Within the reality of the show, I meant moreso the elite being made accountable for their "sins" by a truly spiritual "caste" as much as anyone else. Without, in the context of GOT as an HBO show, I was considering it moreso as an attack on the rampant sexuality/perversion (the nudity and "porn" aspects) of earlier (and current) seasons, nicely framed by most of the worst of it (the over the top titties on screen time as well as the sparrows calling people out as boy fuckers and doing whatever he was about to do with that knife) taking place in Baelish's brothel.

and to head off the violence being immoral aspects that can be argued back, absolutely. But the difference being most previous violence of the show serves the elite in their power games, while the violence of the sparrows serves a spiritual ideal where all are equal in accountability.

yeah, but we also "got to see" cercei naked thanks to the sparrows. i guess i mean, where the rubber hits the road, the sparrows will feed into these elements of the show, rather than detracting from them. regardless of if they call out "immoral" things, they also will act against people who aren't really doing anything so terrible. they're just religious fanatics. it's like... we don't want people having sex, but we do want to strip people and march them through the streets so others can call them sexually-derogatory names and throw excrement and blood on them. i struggle to think that the head sparrow is full of the purest of intentions. he may be a "true believer," but he's probably a sick man.

hah. i probably think so. but some "heights" have been reached, with having a father burn his daughter to death; and having another child torture someone (albeit a terrible person) to death. i mean, at this point, i think i agree they want to keep pushing the envelope with the violence on purpose... because i don't know what else to think. but maybe, they'll surprise us all, and tone it down...

i don't know if it bothers me or not. there were a couple episodes with ramsey bolton that i just couldn't get out of my head for like a month, they were so awful. and there was the red wedding... and i know most of the characters are killers on the show...

but the plots... i find the plots really interesting...

Yeah I don't think its a stretch to say the sparrows are authoritarian thugs whose method of punishment is 10x worse than anything else.

no he's definitely sick & insane. the fact that he is a "true believer" who is eager to use violence to achieve his ends, and who isn't afraid of death makes him someone to be fearful of.

Cersei is ridiculously stupid for arming a bunch of religious fanatics & extremists she is obviously pretty terrible at ruling & shouldn't have power, but of course she believes otherwise.

Nothing in that show, besides the fantasy elements, is even remotely far from truth of what has and does go on in the real world. Don't kid yourself by thinking this show is bringing anything especially evil and immoral to the table when it comes to humanity. Everything that goes on in in GOT is a theatrical reflection of what goes on in society and cultures past and present.

It's why I like watching it and also why its so popular.

As far as the sex goes....the sex is pretty tame and hardly porn. Actually there hasn't been enough tits and ass in season 5 for me. Well, besides Cersei's public slut shaming.... she has got a really surprisingly nice rack, which had always been hidden under a cloak.

I know all of that, but still it isn't my kind of thing. Maybe my moral compass is stronger, who knows?

I wouldn't ever forbid it btw. Freedom is the ultimate thing.

Yes, your moral compass must be stronger then mine. That's it. Whatever gets you through your day.

This is long and just a big ramble. I have watched bits of Season 1 and 2. Season 3 I have followed till episode 7 or so. Idk. I don’t remember anymore. I read some spoilers for this Season by accident. I’m not really up to date. I found some characters interesting. I don’t like violence just for some show effect. Hell, I don’t like any glorification of it at all. But idk the whole show portrays how power and violence affect people. It’s not too off, I guess. I mean it’s still fantastical and everything, but it’s also grim and bleak. E.g. Tywin who ordered the Death of Elia and her kids. How she got raped and she and her kids got killed in the most horrible way and how he probably thought it was necessary. If they survive, they would always pose a threat to his claim and his family. You raise to power and these are the choices.

I think the show is also about survival and who can survive. You just can’t carry around a lot of illusions when you are faced with these kind of choices. But it’s human to have illusions and for me the characters who felt the closest; or the most realistic had this human quality. They had hope. They hoped things, even when their situation pointed to a different outcome. Or they had ideals, they thought they knew what was right and what was wrong, but then life played a trick on them and they got into dangerous situations and then it was adapt and live - or die. They had to do things, that went against what they thought was right. Like when John had to kill Qhorin. He did it because he wanted to gain the wildlings trust, he thought it was his duty - protecting the realm. He had his ideals and he killed, because he thought it served a purpose. But in the end, the ones who think there might be purpose, a point in all this, are vulnerable. Like Sansa said 'it’s always the monsters who win in life'. Vulnerabilities can always be exploited. Illusions don‘t measure up to reality and ideals can lead them to make dumb decisions - ‚the road to hell is paved with good intentions‘.

I think a lot of things just got stripped away from them. Some tried to mindlessly survive, tried to escape the violence, and turned numb inside, because it all became normal, part of their everyday life. Others again were cold blooded enough, and could deliver the blow to others, so that no one had the upper hand over them. In the end, they all lost something, that they had before. Purpose, meaning or sth else. It’s quite like the price you pay for survival in GRRM world - it's kinda shitty.
‘As Faulkner says, all of us have the capacity in us for great good and for great evil, for love but also for hate. I wanted to write those kinds of complex character in a fantasy, and not just have all the good people get together to fight the bad guy’. 'I’ve always preferred writing about grey characters and human characters. Whether they are giants or elves or dwarves, or whatever they are, they’re still human, and the human heart is still in conflict with the self.’ - GRRM

Re. characters that I find interesting: Sansa (in the books). Yeah there is a part of me that roots for her and wishes that she is going to make it. Idk why. It’s just that she is this young girl and she is practically defenseless. But there is something in her. The monster comment; she understands that you can’t run around having a lot of illusions about the situation. Her development was just realistic for me, like how she turned... flexible so to speak. How she learned to deflect and act her part and she is still living, while harder, ‚tougher‘ types got killed. Like not survival of the toughest, but survival of the one who is best adapted.

But the opposite, like in Stannis, was also interesting. He, who would rather break than bend. So rigid and tense. Bet, if you could get him to sit on a piece of coal, you could retire early. He was that character who really didn’t wanted to compromise anything in himself and you can get these ideas that this might be a quality needed in a good king. But maybe that was also all before the thing with his daughter. The character that I didn’t like, because I found her development somewhat off, is Daenerys. I mean it’s like she and Tyrion are GRRM favourite kiddos and he got some illusions about these two. Like she says the right things, raises above all challenges and like she is written as the character, that is still somewhat ‚decent‘. The whole thing with her dragons is too deux ex machina for me. Her fierce Dragon ruler, mother of everything schtick is also doing nothing for me. She is to off. Like a fantasy, not a real person.

Lena Headey (Cersei's actress) had her head photoshopped onto her body double for the walk of shame https://winteriscoming.net/2015/06/2...e-reveals-all/

also, in the books, i didn't imagine Cersei to have that kind of body during her walk. by then she has aged, shows signs of her 3 pregnancies, and is overweight from her alcoholism.

That was then, this is now.
what a horribly off-base interpretation of peoples motives for watching this show. maybe you don't like any art form with a plot, including conflict/struggle, climax, and resolution, because anything bad that happens is clearly only there so people can mindlessly jack off to tragedy...when the boy who cried wolf got eaten, that was the best part, bcuz of voyeuristic sadism...

just because its a little too much for you to stomach doesn't mean the people who enjoy it are snuff porn perverts or something.

There is something off about this season 6..it has a canned feeling to the scriptwriting.

The flashbacks add an interesting element although when TV shows start in with flashbacks it usually means the beginning of the end for the show. Fun to see young Ed Stark & Co.

i've felt like this new season has been pandering/teasing to the fan theories way too much.

And am I the only one who finds Daenerys' storyline utterly boring? And now even Tyrion is wasted on her useless storyline...

I liked her up to the point that she chained up her dragons. Wtf!?!
As 'Mother of Dragons', it's her responsibility to learn from her dragons how to best guide their natures for living in the world D lives in. I'm hoping Tyrion will start working with them. He could be the 'true' Father/Mentor of Dragons.

Daenerys keeps reminding me of a child playing at being an adult.

That's because that's what she is. Most of the central characters are teens and pre-teens.

Exactly! I didn't dislike her at first (although I was always bored with her storyline), but now she is just annoying (and seems to constantly hold up her "mother of dragon" thing for status, not out of concern for the dragons). I have high hopes for Tyrion and the dragons, too. At least then it makes sense for him to be there...

@wacey, ikr re: shape. That shot of him sitting up is just too sexy for words...

I never realized how dark everything is. I can barely see anything unless I turn the brightness on my TV up because every scene seems to be in the dark.
