    Default A Biased Reading List

Derived from my Goodreads acquaintances' favourite books. Naturally, this will be biased towards their and my taste. I think it will be more "enjoyable" than my previous attempt/s (?) that was more focussed on teh canon. It will probably also be more enjoyable than lists like the Boxall 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, and less head-scratching and laughable than some top 100 books list you may read in some newspaper.

This has numerous spelling errors in it due to database encoding issues, which I'll correct imminently. I've also not checked the publication dates yet (edit: actually, I can't be bothered checking them unless they're "obviously" wrong - you'll have to make do with what Goodreads says) (same for page count, but I certainly wasn't going to check those). I intend to add genres at some point, although not immediately. More notes to follow.

Goodreads has a big bias to recent books, especially ones published since its launch in 2007.

This list is certainly an improvement on that, but it is far more heavily weighted to recent works than my previous list\s (I cannot remember how many I've actually done).

If a compilation appeared in the top 1000 (that is, the top 1000 with duplicate material removed) along with all its component parts, I only included the compilation - but only if the components parts are for the same series.

I'm not aware that the Terry Pratchett's entire Discworld series actually exists in an omnibus, but rather than listing 35 books I simply recorded the series as one entry. There are few other such instances where I included a series where not all of the component parts were in the top 1000 - but I think I had a rule that more than 50% of the component works had to be in the top 1000.

Nightfall by Isaac Asimov is a longer version of the short story of the same name that appears in Nightfall and Other Stories, so I included both.

Two H.P. Lovecraft story collections are included separately, but you're probably better off just investigating his Complete Works in some form.

If I get round to listing books in subsections via genre, I intend to include the non-compilation works that I excluded here.

I suggest you create an account at archive.org if you have not already done so as then you will be able to borrow most of these for free, including very recent works.

I'm allergic to goodreads for some reason so I don't really know how this works, but have you and/or your friend read all the books on this list, or is it a combination of recommendations for two people?

Part of the reason I'm asking is I've no idea how many books one will have read by the middle thirties (my age), provided one reads every day and is a bit of a slow reader. It is difficult to estimate because during summer holidays I've had weeks where I read more than seven books (mostly not light novels/children's books), but The Count of Monte Cristo took me something like nine weeks to read, and I was at it nearly every day (mostly not reading multiple books concurrently). The number is further skewed by rereads (I've read another book, but the list of books I've read hasn't got any longer), books like The Brothers Karamazov, which I've half-read three or four times but never finished, and phases of short story/essay/fairytale/niche sci-fi etc (e.g., purchase paperback compilations and never read from cover to cover). I'm so far from being able to estimate how much I read that I wouldn't be surprised to find either 1)hoping to read a thousand books in my lifetime is completely unrealistic or else 2)I've already read a thousand or more.

Either way, my compliments... Mary Beard is great, and Adichie is brilliant.

Never knew there were two versions of Nightfall, and now I couldn't say which I've read lol

I don't know that this will catch on but forumites, tag your favourites:
    112, 132, 585, 732, 759, 867
+(not included) Daisy Miller, Weaveworld lol

If I recall, the list is a collection of several hundred people's 5 star rated books: people who I selected because they were well-read, so it's an extremely select group of people. The books are in approximate age order here, rather than number of likes.

I've probably read the vast majority of books on this list, but not all. But includes a lot of skimming - if I don't like a book after skimming, I won't read it in full. Most of my Goodreads friends won't have done the same.

The BBC reckoned that most people will only have read 6 books out of their "The Big Read - Best Loved Novels of All Time"
    https://www.listchallenges.com/kauni...ooks-challenge

so essentially, it probably doesn't take a lot to be more well-read than most people of any age. Maybe start reading unread books of authors you already like, as well as exploring authors that are new to you from genres you like. Not everybody likes Jane Austen style novels for example. You could also listen to audiobook versions too. I think a dozen books a year is manageable if you read them, but a lot more if you listen to them. I don't think you should feel guilty either about quickly moving on from a book you're not enjoying.

I have a lot of data stored away that's a mess, so I'm not sure if this data is accurate (it's probably more up-to-date than the data above, but in any case, it doesn't add up counts for duplicates of the same edition, I'll try to look further). But a top 100 in order of most rated as 5 stars is as follows (there's quickly a sharp drop off in number of likes even in the top 100):

But a top 100 in order of most rated as 5 stars is as follows (there's quickly a sharp drop off in number of likes even in the top 100):
Makes sense, but I'm just doomed to disagree with most people on literature. For instance I think Hamlet is better than Othello, The Iliad is better than the Odyssey, To Kill a Mockingbird is sort of out-of-date (ideas haven't aged well) so I wouldn't give five stars at all, A Study in Scarlet and Hound of the Baskervilles are both better than any of the Sherlock Holmes collections, the fifth Harry Potter book is the best of the lot (and the seventh is one of the worst), Middlemarch is the best book on the list, etc

Also it's hard to compare fiction with nonfiction (Anne Frank)--what lends quality to nonfiction might be something different

There's so many books for people to disagree with you about, so it's not surprising if the majority don't have the same fave as you. The average rating between the 10 most liked Shakespeare plays is probably marginally different (although they also have a significant range in popularity, the less popular plays are more likely to be rated by people who are more strict in their ratings, although that's irrelevant for the ranking I gave you because the people involved are naturally strict in their ratings for the most part).
