Default How do you enhance your privacy and fight surveillance

Just curious. I use Adblock Plus, Pirate Browser (uses tor network, although doesn't provide anonymity), NoScript, HTTPS Everywhere. Duckduckgo is my search engine but if it doesn't provide good search results I'll just do an encrypted google search. I use self-destructing privnotes to discuss sensitive topics, but the javascript makes me a bit wary so I might change to temp.pm notes. I'll get on with Tor when I don't feel too lazy for it.

But I still have Windows so I'm probably fucked..

Have you done anything to at least hamper the surveillance?

It depends on whether I'm skyping with me mates about bombing the US Embassy or if I merely want to find ways of crossing international borders undetected.

Away with Skype and here's Pidgin! Remember to pack the messages with some steganography. Happy bombing!

But seriously, what do you mean with your joke? It almost sounded like "I've got nothing to hide".

The only thing I do is use AdBlock, but more because I hate ads than privacy concerns. Rather, I am in the U.S., and am under no illusion that anything I do will have any effect whatsoever.
"How could we forget those ancient myths that stand at the beginning of all races, the myths about dragons that at the last moment are transformed into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love."

i use 6 aliases on-line and public-key encryption for all serious emails (I require the other party to use encryption or I don't answer).
I'm currently writing a light messaging application whiich uses Elliptic Curve Encryption, which should be hard for government supercomputers to crack. at least for now...

Here's a pretty good website that lists all sorts of software alternatives and browser extensions to maximize privacy and security: https://prism-break.org/en/

You won't want to use Skype, as that has a backdoor. There's always ekiga.

You can make it more difficult for bulk data collection. HTTPS Everywhere is light and doesn't interfere with the ease of usage.

You could also upgrade to Adblock Plus for free.

I don't think it's okay for the government to act like a jealous girlfriend.
Can I have your passwords, credit card info, browser history (porn preferrences too, if you use private mode)? No, you don't want to give it out to me, but for some reason you don't mind govts snooping around. I don't understand why should the governments be recording me having cyber sex, along with millions of users, some of them minors (and yes, the British GCHQ is guilty of collecting record amounts of child porn). There has already been cases where the NSA workers spy on their exes.

Also, it's not just the government. Some factions are willing to blackmail to expose your preference for that porn. You know, that embarrassing one. With dwarves.

Why do you think they are collecting this data?

If you haven't already, you could get the latest version of Tor browser and be searching the internet using The Onion Router (no relation to the newspaper). It is completlely anon and as long as you don't have Java scripts running, its compeltly untracable. The down sides are that its slower because its encrypted and sends your data through many layers and servers in many peices. Its what journalists, drug/ arms dealers, shady people use, or so the headlines read. It also happens to be the only way you can browse the now defunct Silk Road and shop with bit coins. (the silk road was not "hacked" by the CIA, the admin was caught by old school spy techniques). Don't try and access you bank account, however, because the browser randomizes your IP address and thhe bank website (or facebook, or google, or often youtube) won't recognize your IP address and deny you access.

Other way include never, ever, ever giving your cell number to a computer like google chrome, gmail, iphone apple, whatever. And they are sneaky about it. They often say they need it in order to make an account. There are way around these messages, just never trust them, why the hell do they need your cell number? I will tell you why, it's because in the fine print it gives them permission ]to you personal details and in some instances allows to see where you are on planet earth. 3rd party apps also steal this info, they are even teaching high school kids in my country how to have more privacy because no one knows what the fuck is being collected for the use of advertisement data mining, and I am sure other dubious purposes.

That's true. Just be careful because your browser does carry a fingerprint. Changing your browser agent and such will help to anonymize that. Also be aware that Tor cannot account for personal information that you disclose online. The maker of that big shady eBay-equivalent site got caught because he released code for it on a bug fixing site under his personal name for commentary.

Good call. The whole idea of this underground internet is what interests me. Honestly though I don't have much use for it, and I also feel way out of my depth there.

Trelelelele @ never give your cell phone number.

Government can easily locate you without it to approx. 1 meter. Doesn't matter if your cell is off.

It is, as long you're suspect of, say, terrorist attack on the16types.info soil, you can be sure that government can locate you and will.

As you can see I am a recidivist when it comes to crimes on this forum. Just look what happened to me.

Another way is to not use google chrome when you sign in to facebook, cause every "like", every website will be recorded. Also, never fill out the info card of FB, like where you went to school and what your favorite movie is ect.., no one in the real world cares about your favorite shit, or places you have been and facebook shouldn't either. Except they do. They want to make a perfect little map of you, because the FBI runs that thing gaaaaahhhhh. Actually I personally don't care, but some people might.

Read the fine print, the terms and agreements, before accepting. When I got my macbook, Apple wanted to track and record everything, form the songs I have in itunes, to my notes, to my contact lists. I had to uncheck the boxes because otherwise it would have been automatic. Anyway, you can put a little bit of a smoke screen up in todays age and protect your privacy from 3rd party apps and websites, but you can bet that governments know everything about you at this point.

Man, I sound like a paranoid person. I'm really not. I am of the "pre-internet generation", so privacy is a little concerning.

Fingerprint was mentioned. It's important to understand what it is. Fingerprint is the recognizable (to third parties) online behavior you engage in. You can test the uniqueness of your activity in here.

Fingerprint is also the unique set of sub features such as browser agent that identifies what browser you're using, and the list of fonts it is capable of supporting. This list of features, and others, can be queried by an outside server to determine a unique signature for your personal browser.
