    Default Concerning concerning gods

Do you believe that there is a Great Lifeforce out there that oversees everything we do? It seems there are those who are very attached to material things and are generally very worldy, and yet they believe in such a Lifeforce...certainly more than half of the world's population...this is quite astonishing to me. A fair number of Great scientists and philosophers have also believed this even if they do not allow it to have a measurable impact on their lives.

Why isn't it that people devote more time to something of practical benefit and only occasional nihilistic soul-destroying oh why did she leave me misery like Love? I think partly much of this is to do with people being complex creatures capable of having multiples modes of expression and also to do with tradition but it is something I can't really comprehend.

Why do so many people devote time to believing in some Supreme Lifeforce rather than something potentially more satisfying?

    Like what?
What can be more satisfying than getting feeling of security to replace possibly torturous lack of it? There is no more direct and simplistic hack in to insecurities than to believing that there is benevolent intent behind everything.

Aren't you assuming that there is something potentially more satisfying, for some people?

In a sense, yes I do, and so does the rest of humanity whether we realize it or not. The laws of physics are omnipresent and unforgiving.

As I say, Love is more than adequate in my view

is that directed at me? You mean that I take for granted that people can believe things without them being satisfying?

That isn't really a Great Lifeforce though - more of a logical necessity.

To me, love is a supreme lifeforce.

This is why some people believe what they do.

People prefer being on the receiving end of love, hence the benevolent overseer.

    Fair enough.

Though I would like to point out that the question you are asking, albeit metaphysical in nature, parallels the pursuit of contemporary theoretical physics in defining a Theory of Everything that would unify the four fundamental forces (gravity, electromagnetism, and the strong and weak nuclear interactions) with a singular, underlying mechanism. In my opinion, that mechanism (whatever it may be) is the only rational answer to your query independent of a belief in the supernatural.

Looks like my ignore list is experiencing new growth in 1Q-FY14. Holdings have increased by a factor of two just this morning.
