    lol to me, the antics of Putin/the Russian government (though entertaining) render him hard to take seriously at times. Putin makes himself look rather cartoonish when trying too hard to project a macho image, though i know it's part of his schtick.

    given the recent anti-homosexual sentiment in the country, one of my professors the other day was wondering aloud if Putin is a closeted homosexual. i personally disagree with that, but i understand why that thought would cross someone's mind. when you try too hard to demonize & stamp out gay behavior it just makes many people think "he doth protest too much"

    also Russia doing things like invading tiny little Georgia a few years ago is not exactly an impressive show of strength (though admittedly it did send a message to former Communist and Soviet states in the region). and Putin telling former French president Sarkozy that he wanted to hang Georgian president Saakashvili "by the balls" was certainly hilarious. you just don't hear that kind of rhetoric from Western leaders
