Default Managers where you work facebook friending you

What do you think about this? For some reason I fucking hate it. This guy that just started managing my work area this week sent me one. He seems like a nice guy and all and it's preliminary to say but I don't think he knows how to run an area well, but like I don't actually know you, buddy. Why the fuck do you want to be facebook friends? I don't want you to see my updates. I don't even want to see your updates. Did you have a beer and grill some brauts this weekend? Cool bro.

I don't know. I think it's kind of shady, almost like they want to keep tabs on me when superiors or whatever try to be my friend. There's a broader issue than facebook here, because I very rarely form friendships with anyone that is supposed to be able to tell me what to do. The only managers I get along with are the ones that give me a goal, not orders and aren't total douchenozzles. Even then I wouldn't consider them friends. The only friends I have that are managers were friends before they got promoted. Ugh I hate hierarchies. And organizational charts.

With the current state of affairs, I believe you can be explicitly specific about what is visible to whom. Put them in a restricted group or deny/ignore their request. I don't see a problem.

I like my managers, but I don't want them on my Facebook wall. No risk of misunderstanding, no risk of offense, no Facebook-related stupidity.

Facebook in general is starting to get to me. I mean I like it for certain reasons like keeping in touch with friends I don't live near but even then it still feels like its just there to give attention whores more attention. We don't need to see a new picture of your kids everyday. Having said that, yes that is weird to have a manager as a friend and I think it's in very poor taste for a superior to send you a Facebook request. I've never had it happen other than when my supervisor used it to hit on me but I welcomed that lol. There are ways to block certain ppl from seeing things. I remember I had this creepy guy I used to work with add me and I restricted it so all he could see was my Profile picture lol.

You can also delete him. He might not notice if he has many "friends". If he asks about it, just say it was nothing personal, but that you felt uncomfortable having a boss-type figure delving into your personal off-work life. And, if he insists...then create a work related fb page for him to refriend.

Just yesterday I finally learned how to adapt what I see from my fb friend's, though I am still learning how to use that system, heh.

You can place him in the "lowest of all" friends category, where he won't even be able to see most of your pics.

But if I were you I would of course simply not accept his invitation.

Yeah, tell him your machine exploded from taking orders and organizational charts and you can't friend him on facebook. You can tell tell him exactly what you wrote in this thread to his face next time you see him.

Last but not least you can friend him and act like his friend by not actually responding to anything he posts and smile, and invite him to lunch when you see him at work.

I have a friend who has a tv job and meets people all of the time who want to friend him on facebook. He had a pretty fun loving past that is well documented in his facebook pictures, but now he wants to put forth a more professional image. So he has a 2nd facebook account that says his name and tv station affiliation. He directs tv fans to that profile. I also know some people who have added a new professional profile, and kept their old profile but changed the old account name to their first name and last initial only. Professional acquaintances who want to make a friend request will be searching for their last name.

I cannot tell you how long this road shall be, but fear not the ob-stacles in your path, for fate has vouchsafed your reward.
Though the road may wind, yea, your hearts grow weary, still shall ye follow them, even unto your salvation

I have mostly done freelance but I already share your attitude, mune.

When I was running for office I had to cleanup my social media a bit since to a political representative every potential voter is an employer who you have to kiss ass to. Fortunately, my target group is pretty relaxed.

A growing amount of my professional acquaintances are befriending me on Facebook, too. It's undiplomatic to reject outright, but I don't particularly enjoy the feeling of being forced to share personal stuff. To avoid cluttering up their streams with my more personal (and likely mundane, to those who do not know or really care about me) posts, I created a new group that I call "non-acquaintances" for lack of a better label. I made it my default for sharing and now if I have a general announcement sort of post I'll put it as the general "friends," but otherwise I just keep it to those who actually might be interested in what I have to share.

I have accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn... each serve their own purpose and have a bit of a different audience. For me, FB is for friends, Twitter is for the world + my tech community, Google+ is pretty much just for my professional circles, and LinkedIn is that thing I ignore unless somebody requests to be a connection and if I recognize their name I accept.
Oh, to find you in dreams - mixing prior, analog, and never-beens... facts slip and turn and change with little lucidity. except the strong, permeating reality of emotion.

Introduce a friend to your boss and have him act all creepy and stalkerish. Spread some nasty rumors about him too. Then get him to friend your boss, and get him to talk about how much "fun" the three of you will have.
