The cognitive faculty linking the IM and EM function systems is the processor of correlation.
For each IM element there are sixteen correlates, one for each IE.
This is the fundamental structure of reality (categorically speaking).
However going a level deeper, to the political subelements (the processors of phase and state respective to each function) we find that we can make much more specific claims, many of which have already been made, some ancient, some recent.
We use our powers of correlation to identify dependencies between conditions. At root, every condition is an IE state.
We develop knowledge by building trees of correlation. As each correlation must be proven through supporting correlations, knowledge is difficult to develop, requiring a great deal of cooperation between many people of diverse talents.
We have only recently evolved past the phase of antiquity, wherein the history of three-tier correlations was handed down via oral tradition (see the biblical Book of Proverbs for a list of these). The modern era appears to be founded on four and five tier correlations, which in turn require a great deal of learning and concentration to understand. In the name of advancing knowledge of these correlations, the EM type dispositions have been exalted. Capitalism -- the freedom to choose one's associations, specialties, and professional relationships -- has promoted the shift in this direction away from the trades focus of antiquity. To that end, the dual-type has been exalted even more than either of the other two systems; in fact, the discovery of TIMs has probably increased specialization overall.
This trend has been mostly positive, having been contained by capitalistic and popular forces. Where obfusticating complexity has reigned in a field, there too has developed stagnation and irrelevance, walled gardens inaccessible to all save the minority who were born with the potential to learn the keys. Generally EM look-a-likes, comparatives, and supervisors have focused their criticism to positive effect, with only the most walled towers of academia the only hold-outs. The pressure to keep knowledge open, in the name of demonstrating the proof or falsity of hypotheticals, nourishes the trees of knowledge and keeps them growing.
The claim has been made before that the universe itself is in a constant process of differentiation, of developing ever more complex relationships between its particles. This complexity is localized: relationship potentials are much more complex on earth, particularly since the rise of mankind and especially so since the Industrial Revolution (which saw the development of plastics, which gravity alone cannot create), than in any place which cannot support life. It would seem man has an important part in the cosmic prerogative of increasing complexity in relationships.
When speaking of correlations, it is important to distinguish between kinds of correlations. Not only between IEs, but between subelements.
There appear to be eight. Positive states may correlate with either positive or negative states. The same holds for negative states. Fluctuations of state may correlate with further fluctuations or reinforcements of state. Reinforcements of state may predicate fluctuation or reinforcement.
In terms of real concepts, phases and states are considered in tandem. A change of an IE atom (a property of a thing) to a negative state (a state of less value when compared to an alternative) may result in the transformation of another property of that object (or another) to a positive state.
I leave you with a clip from FFIV, which I was reminded of while writing this. While it may seem out of place, it actually serves as a competent and concise example of the subject matter. Zemus represents endurance (the apparent persistence of a state despite a negative transformation of supposedly correlative state), where Cecil and Golbez represent the order of "orthodox" correlative thinking (negatives correlate to negatives, positives correlate to positives).
Why the frustration of efforts? The answer lies in the IM ring: although the rate of force propagation maxes out at the speed of light, changes in IE state may be gradual, or immediate. They are consequential factors. As such, good intentions may seek to create a positive change in a situation by creating a positive element at the expense of other elements. When one tries to create the change of state, the domino effect of negatives in other element domains works its way through to the states of other objects to the intended object through the irrational-rational basis dynamic.
In other words, the devil is in the details.
