Assad's troubles are good for the West: it means he can't sponsor terrorism anymore. Eventually he's probably going to run out of money. That reminds me, I wonder how many people in these cities are still paying their taxes? There are many ways to undermine a government.
It seems to me the protestors, unlike in Libya, are divided between self-righteous altruists and consequentialist diehards. The Rebel Alliance is trying to take shape, but it's being undermined by the peaceniks who think how you live your live is more important than how long you live. Assad opponents who are in the middle of these extremes aren't sure which way they "should" go.
They should decide whether they want to keep Assad or not, and if they don't, create a new society without him.
I've done some research on the matter. It looks to me like Syria is a modern Russian satellite. Perhaps the last. Syria permits the Russians the use of their port, and Russia has taken very good care of it.

It looks like SCO vs the West all over again, and it looks like the West is, naively, angling for a death blow. The only people who will benefit from this are the military industrial complex, who, like as not, are probably the chief powers beating the war drums.

I'm constantly looking to align the real with the ideal.I've been more oriented toward being overly idealistic by expecting the real to match the ideal. My thinking side is dominent.
